Migraine headache attacks are associated with neurovascular inflammation, but their pathophysiological mechanisms have not been fully explained. Objective: To investigate the relationship between serum vaspin, visfatin, chemerin and interleukin-18 (IL-18) levels and the frequency of attacks in migraine headache. Methods: Three groups were established: migraine with aura (n = 50), migraine without aura (n = 50) and control group (n = 50). The migraine diagnosis was made in accordance with the International Classification of Headache Disorders-III beta diagnostic criteria. The analyses on serum vaspin, visfatin, chemerin and IL-18 levels were performed using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method. Results: The serum vaspin, visfatin, chemerin and IL-18 levels were found to be significantly higher in the migraine patients than in the control group (p < 0.01). No statistically significant differences in serum vaspin, visfatin, chemerin and IL-18 levels were found among the migraine patients during attacks or in the interictal period (p>0.05). The serum visfatin and chemerin levels of the migraine patients were positively correlated with their serum IL-18 levels (p < 0.01), while their serum chemerin and visfatin levels were positively correlated with their serum vaspin levels (p < 0.05). Conclusions: This study showed that these biomarkers may be related to migraine pathogenesis. Nonetheless, we believe that more comprehensive studies are needed in order to further understand the role of vaspin, visfatin, chemerin and IL-18 levels in the pathophysiology of migraine headachesArticle Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 4Determination of hydroxymethylfurfural in Turkish honeys, pekmez (grape molasses), and jam samples by high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection(Wiley Online Library, 2022) Elmastas, Ayhan; Aydin, Firat; Umaz, Adil; Kılınc, Ersin; Arslan, Yasin; aydin, IsilHydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a chemical contaminant that is not naturally present in carbohydrate-containing food samples. The HMF amounts were changed between 4.8 and 214.1 mg/kg in honey; between 7.8 and 204.0 mg/kg in pekmez (grape molasses); between 5.9 and 22.4 mg/kg in strawberry jam; between 6.0 and 65.4 mg/kg in apricot jam; and between 9.2 and 55.9 mg/kg in cherry found by HPLC. The linear calibration plot of HMF was ranged from 0.05 to 10.0 mu g/ml. The correlation coefficient was found to be 0.99997. LOD and LOQ values were found to be 12.0 and 40.0 ng/ml, respectively. According to the experimental results, HMF amounts of four honey samples, three pekmez (grape molasses) samples, one apricot jam, and one cherry jam for investigated samples were found to be higher than the permission amount of Turkish Food Codex. Novelty impact statement Based on experimental results in this study, if the honey is in a transparent package such as a glass, it should be stored in a dark environment. It would be healthier to prefer molasses produced by reliable brands at low temperatures under vacuum instead of molasses made with traditional methods in open boilers. Generally, since jams with high HMF amount have an overcooked or even burnt flavor, this is an extremely negative situation for consumers.Article Citation - Scopus: 7Reactive Blue 19 Adsorption on Activated Carbon from Pumpkin (Cucurbita Pepo) Seed Waste: Kinetic, Isotherm and Thermodynamic Studies(Kauno Technologijos Universitetas, 2024) Kızıl, Yusuf; Benek, Veysel; Teğin, İbrahim; Önal, Yunus; Erol, Kadir; Alacabey, İhsanIn this study, the removal of reactive blue 19 dyestuffs in aqueous systems was investigated by the adsorption method using activated carbon obtained from pumpkin seed waste. Activated carbon obtained from pumpkin seed waste functionalized with ZnCl2 was used as an absorbent. Pumpkin seed hydrochar was characterized by FT-IR, SEM, TGA-DTA, BET, and XPS. In the experimental stages, the adsorption equilibrium time was determined as 45 minutes, the adsorbent dosage was 0.8 g and the optimum pH was 6.0. After this step, the adsorption parameters of Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms were investigated. It has been pointed out that the adsorption process fits better with the Freundlich isotherm model, and the adhesion occurs in a multilayered manner and on a heterogeneous surface. Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms support that the bonding mechanism is realized by physical interactions. When the kinetic data were evaluated, adsorption mechanism was found to be compatible with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The thermodynamic parameters of adsorption indicate that the system is endothermic, and the adsorption of reactive blue 19 on activated carbon is a spontaneous process.Presentation Synthesis and Characterization of Magnetic Nano-Platform(International Social Sciences and Education Conference, 2017) TURAL; ERTAŞ;TARHAN;TURAL;, Bilsen; Erdal; Tuba; Servet;…Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 4Investigation of serum ischemic-modified albumin, galectin-3, paraoxonase-1, and myeloperoxidase activity levels in patients with acute brucellosis(Taylor & Francis, 2023) Dündar, AhmetObjectives: Infection remains current as an important discussion topic in the etiological factors of atherosclerosis. Ischemic-modified albumin (IMA), galectin-3 (gal-3), paraoxonase-1 (PON-1), and myeloperoxidase (MPO) are biomolecules that play an important role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Our aim is to investigate serum IMA, gal-3, PON-1, and MPO activity in acute brucellosis infection. Materials and methods: Forty patients with acute brucellosis and 40 healthy individuals were included in the study. Serum IMA, gal-3, PON-1, and MPO activity were analyzed by the ELISA method. Results: In acute brucellosis infection, serum gal-3, IMA, and MPO activities were found to be significantly increased compared to the control group, and PON-1 activity was found to be significantly decreased compared to the control group (p < 0.001). There was a positive correlation between serum IMA, and MPO activity (r = 0.707 p = 0.000) and a negative correlation (r = -0.943, p = 0.000) between PON-1 activity. There was a positive correlation between serum gal-3 and MPO activity (r = 0.683, p = 0.000) and IMA level (r = 0.927, p = 0.000) and a negative correlation between PON-1 activity (r = -0.951, p = 0.000).Conclusion, it was found that serum gal-3, IMA levels and MPO activity increased, while PON-1 activity decreased. These results showed that the oxidant-anti-oxidant balance is impaired in acute brucellosis infection. In addition, these results indicate that brucella infection may be increase the risk of atherosclerosis. Further studies are needed to support our findings.Presentation Removal of hazardous azo dye from aqueous solution by cross linked magnetic biosorbent equilibrium and kinetic studies(Inernational Congress on Water, Waste and Energy Management, 2016) TURAL; TARHAN; TURAL;, BİLSEN; TUBA; SERVET…Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 2Examination of the effects of kefir on healing factors in a mice burn model infected with E.coli, S.aureus and P.aeruginosa using qRT-PCR(Elsevier, 2023) Çetik Yıldız, Songül; Demir, Cemil; Ayhancı, AdnanBurn areas are susceptible to bacterial growth and infections, particularly in cases with lengthy periods of hospital stay. The YKL-40 protein, which is secreted from various cells that contribute to inflammation and infection, plays a role in immune regulation. Objective: This study investigated the serum YKL-40 levels of patients with clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) and MS. Methods: The participants was divided into three groups: 1) patients with CIS (n = 20); 2) patients with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS; n = 39); and 3) healthy individuals (n = 35). The YKL-40 levels in serum samples obtained from the participants were measured using enzyme-linked immunoassays. Results: The median serum YKL-40 level was 20.2 ng/mL (range 9.8-75.9 ng/mL) in the patients with CIS, 22.7 ng/mL (range 13.4-57.9 ng/mL) in the patients with RRMS and 11.0 ng/mL (range 10.0-17.3 ng/mL) in the control group (p < 0.001). The serum YKL-40 levels in the patients with RRMS were correlated with the patients’ expanded disability status scale scores and ages (p < 0.05). No relationships were determined between the serum YKL-40 levels and the other variables (p > 0.05). The serum YKL-40 levels were higher in the CIS group than in the MS group. These findings show that the serum YKL-40 levels were high even at the beginning of the disease. The serum YKL-40 levels were also not involved in the progression to clinically definite MS. Conclusions: The findings from this study suggested that YKL-40 may be a useful marker for the inflammatory process of MS.Article Citation - WoS: 43Citation - Scopus: 50gamma-Fe2O3 magnetic nanoparticle functionalized with carboxylated multi walled carbon nanotube for magnetic solid phase extractions and determinations of Sudan dyes and Para Red in food samples(ELSEVIER SCI LTD, 2018) Kilinc, Ersin; Celik, Kadir Serdar; Bilgetekin, HavinHybrid nanostructures composed of gamma-Fe2O3 (maghemite) and carboxylated-multi walled carbon nanotube (cMWCNT) were used for the magnetic solid phase extractions and determination of Sudan I, II, III, IV, Para Red, Sudan Black B and Sudan Red 7B in chili products. In this study, researchers successfully manufactured surface-modified magnetic diatomite (m-DE-APTES) and used them as a sorbent to extract endosulfan from an aqueous solution. There is no other study like it in the scholarly literature, and the results are astounding. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), electron spin resonance (ESR), and surface area measurements were used to analyze magnetic diatomite particles with surface modification. According to the analysis results, magnetic diatomite has a wide surface area and a porous structure. Furthermore, m-DE-APTES has a higher endosulfan adsorption capacity (97.2 mg g-1) than raw diatomite (DE) (16.6 mg g-1). Adsorption statistics agree with Langmuir adsorption isotherm (R 2 = 0.9905), and the adsorption occurred spontaneously at -2.576 kj mol-1 in terms of ΔGo. Finally, m-DE-APTES are a viable alternative adsorbent for removing pesticides from aqueous solutions.Article Covid-19 Pandemi Sürecinde Üniversite Öğrencilerinin Depresyon ve Stres Düzeylerinin Belirlenmesi(Dergipark, 2021) Dilmen Bayar, Behiye; Yaşar Can, Sevinç; Erten, Murat; Ekmen, MahmutBu çalışma covid-19 pandemi sürecinde üniversite öğrencilerinin depresyon ve stres düzeyleri arasındaki ilişkinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Conventional karyotyping, as a confirmatory test traditionally used for detecting mosaic and nonmosiac prenatal disorders. Recently Quantitative Fluorescence PCR (QF-PCR) is used for prenatal testing. We retrospectively assessed the frequency of both mosaic and nonmosaic conditions in a large-scale study and compared the clinical value of confirmatory cytogenetic analysis with QF-PCR and other screening tests. Result Of 6033 cases identified as abnormal conditions by sonography or protein marker screening tests, only 180 nonmosaic and 8 mosaic cases confirmed to be abnormal by confirmatory karyotyping test results. The cytogenetic analysis was correlated with other QF-PCR confirmatory test results for nonmosiac conditions but it was not comparable for mosaic cases. Conclusion The cytogenetic analyses were shown to have the greatest clinical value in revealing the various mosaic conditions. The QF-PCR test is shown to be a reliable confirmatory test for nonmosaic diseases but not for mosaicism, and the screening protein marker test can weakly indicate the presence of abnormal cell lines. Moreover, older mothers (>30 years) are at greater risk for developing mosaic ova.
