Article Citation - WoS: 1Violence in Zeki Demirkubuz's Cinema: Innocence and Destiny(ANKARA UNIV, FAC COMMUNICATION, 2015) Aytekin, Pelin ErdalThis article focuses on how Zeki Demirkubuz approaches to the phenomenon of violence in his movies. The study aims at making the world transformed by violence comprehensible, rather than using the film narrative only as a means to discover the concept of violence. The phenomena of violence in Innocence (1997), in which Demirkubuz views violence as "a way of human nature", and Destiny (2006) are subjected to detailed film analysis The cinematographic language created by Demirkubuz in the above mentioned movies is examined through auteur analysis. The diversifying appearances of violence in Demirkubuz's movies are revealed by an analysis informed by mise-en-scene criticism. Thus, the article suggests that Demirkubuz, is one of the significant directors of Turkish cinema who make violence visible through the atmosphere he creates with his characters. It is observed that Demirkubuz's embittered and resigned characters unfold the phenomenon of violence in the movies analysed.Article Citation - WoS: 5Citation - Scopus: 5Variations in the fatty acid compositions of the liver and gonad tissue of spiny eel (Mastacembelus mastacembelus) from Ataturk Dam Lake(WALTER DE GRUYTER GMBH, 2017) Kacar, Semra; Bashan, MehmetObjective: The aim of the study was to investigate quantitative and qualitative fatty acid profiles of the gonad and liver tissue of female Mastacembelus mastacembelus (spiny eel). Methods: Total lipids were extracted with 5 mL of chloroform-methanol (2:1 v/v). Samples containing gonad and liver lipid were transesterified with acidified methanol. The fatty acid methyl esters were extracted with hexane. Fatty acids were detected by gas chromatography (GC). Results: The major saturated fatty acids (SFAs) were myristic acid (C14:0), palmitic acid (C16:0) and stearic acid (C18:0) in both gonad and liver tissue. Oleic acid (C18:1 omega-9) and palmitoleic acid (C16:1 omega-7) were the prominent monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA). The dominant polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) were linoleic acid (LA, C18:2 omega-6), arachidonic acid (AA, C20:4 omega-6), docosapentaenoic acid (C22:5 omega-3) and docoesahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6 omega-3). The ratio of omega-3/omega-6 ranged from 1.55 to 3.44 and 1.18 to 2.71 in the gonad and liver tissue, respectively. Conclusion: The findings of this study will be useful for understanding the seasonal distribution of fatty acid composition in the liver and gonad of spiny eel.Article Citation - WoS: 2Ismah of the Prophets in Mu'tazila(DINBILIMLERI AKAD ARASTIRMA MERKEZI, 2015) Unverdi, VeysiIsmah, one of the special attributes of Prophets in Kalam, is also adopted by Mu'tazila. Ismah is necessary in Mu'tazila for the safety of revelation and for the Prophet to be successful in risala duties. This quality, which the Messenger of Allah has before his prophethood, means he is immune from sins, indecent behavior, disgraceful act, bad moral structure and temperament that would arouse hatred and cause people to stay away from him. Prophet stays away from sin through his own will, and therefore he is not exempt from the proposal. He may commit small sins that won't arouse hatred, but which will lead to lack of merit. Indeed, the prophet is a mortal he is like other people except for his notification duty. Therefore he is also faulted in his humanly speech and decisions. As a result, ismah in Mu'tazila is regarded as a quality that protects the prophethood status. In this context, the quality that Mu'tazila persistently underlines is "not to arouse hatred". The main reason of the fact that they claim only acts that wouldn't arouse hatred could come out of the prophet is because they don't want to harm the confidence in prophetic institution In Mu'tazila, the bases of ismah are miracles, salah-aslah (God does for men what is to their greatest advantage, benefit) and justice principle, the principle of grace and prophet of hujjat. Accordingly, God has bestowed his favor on people by sending the prophet to let them know their interests. For this favor to be the greatest, it is necessary that he is innocent. The fact that he is supported by his miracles, and he is hujjat also requires protection. Otherwise, a non-innocent prophet may not reach his goal in Risala task. And this is incompatible with the fact that God is fair.Article Citation - WoS: 15Citation - Scopus: 15Investigations of Hg(II) and Pb(II) tolerance, removal and bioaccumulation and their effects on antioxidant enzymes on thermophilic Exiguobacterium profundum(Taylor and Francis Inc., 2019) Akkoyun M.B.; Özdemir S.; Kılınç E.; Birhanlı E.Hg(II) and Pb(II) tolerance, removal, bioaccumulation and effects on antioxidant enzymes of thermophilic Exiguobacterium profundum were investigated. The results indicated that Hg(II) was more toxic than Pb(II) to E. profundum. E. profundum was also more tolerant in solid medium than in liquid medium for Pb(II) and Hg(II). The bacterial growth was not significantly influenced at 1.0 and 2.5 mg/L Pb(II) and Hg(II) for 24 h. The highest Hg(II) and Pb(II) bioaccumulation amounts were determined as 37.56 and 54.35 mg metal/dried bacteria, respectively. Bioaccumulation capacities of the cell membrane of E. profundum forHg(II) and Pb(II)were determined. The different concentrations of Pb(II) and Hg(II) enhanced the SOD and CAT enzymes. In addition, variations of the surface macrostructure and the functionality of E. profundum after the interaction with Hg(II) and Pb(II) were investigated by the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), respectively. This investigation obviously showed that thermophilic E. profundum can also be applied for removal and recovery of toxic metals from industrial wastewater. Clearly, a further investigation should be utilized by thermophilic microorganisms. According to antioxidant enyzme activities, E. profundum can be also used as a bioindicator for the detection of toxic metal pollution in natural water samples. © 2019, © 2019 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.Article Citation - WoS: 1Evolving Concepts, Revolving Doors(SAGE PUBLICATIONS INC, 2015) Azeri, SiyavesThe revolving door is a conceptual device. It was introduced to solve mainly technical problems such as the chimney effect; however, the scope of its application transcends the intentions of its inventor, Theophilius Van Kannel. The revolving door problematizes the relation between different segments of space. It fetishizes space by relativizing and, at same time, absolutizing the difference between inside and outside, and by determining the behavior of inhabitants of social space.Article Ibn Nubata al-Khatib and His Sermon Related to the Martyrdom of Hossain(HITIT UNIV, 2018) Gemi, AhmetOne of the prolocutors that his name was eulogized in the history of Arabic Literature is Ibn Nubata. Ibn Nubata who was born in Silvan (Meyyaffirigin/Fariqin), which is now a district of Diyarbakir, in 336/946 was under the care of Hamdani's Amir Sayf al-Dawla Ibn Hamdan (d. 356/967), and he had a preaching duty in the palace. Ibn Nubata who took the reputation of rightful one with the sermons that he negotiated in Silvan and Aleppo has a review of sermons which has come to today. Ibn Nubata death in Silvan in 374/984. Some sources state that he death in Aleppo. The sermon on Hossain's martyrdom that Ibn Nubata negotiated in the second Friday of the month of Muharrem is important. Ibn Nubata expresses his sadness in that sermon, and equally emphasizes the need for Muslims to feel sorry for it.Article An Exploratory Method for an Alternative Narrative of Housing History in Istanbul(UNIV TORONTO PRESS INC, 2016) Atas, ZeynepAnalysis and visualization of spatial data has proven to be an effective tool in communicating apparent or latent spatial information in an efficient way. Here a specific data processing and visualization method is employed in creating an original base for a nonlinear historical narrative of a specific urban phenomenon. Housing development in Istanbul is selected as a case to be explored through a heuristic method involving correspondence analysis (COA) complemented by clustering methods and Bertin's graphics theory. COA is an exploratory method for cross-tabular data analysis, which facilitates the interpretation of data by visualizing the relative relationship between its variables. Two sets of data on the shares of the state, the private sector, and housing cooperatives in housing development in Istanbul between 1987 and 2007 have been processed by COA. The outputs of the process are correspondence maps and Bertin graphics. Maps create a basis for a spatiotemporal analyses of public and private housing development in Istanbul, while revealing certain relation networks and breaks in housing history that are not quite perceptible by looking at the data tables only. Thus, drawing upon the discoveries from the maps, a nonlinear narrative of housing history is proposed as a collection of several thorough analyses of the discoveries within the economic, political, and social setting particular to this geography.Article Citation - WoS: 3Culture as 'Ways of Life' or a Mask of Racism? Culturalisation and the Decline of Universalist Views(AUSTRALIAN CRITICAL RACE & WHITENESS STUDIES ASSOC-ACRAWSA, 2015) Ahmed, SaladdinI begin and conclude the article by arguing that culturalisation has contributed significantly to the decline of the Left and its universal ideals. In the current climate of public opinion, 'race' is no longer used, at least openly, as a scientific truth to justify racism. Instead, 'culture' has become the mysterious term that has made the perpetuation of racist discourse possible. 'Culture', in this newracist worldview, is the unquestioned set of traits continually attributed to the non-White Other, essentially to de-world her Being and de-individualise her personhood. In other words, 'culture', as it is used in the old anthropological sense, is the magic incantation with which the Other is demonised, mystified, and/or ridiculously oversimplified. I focus on the phenomenon of 'culturalisation' as a common new-racist method of de-politicising the Other's affairs and surrounding socio-political phenomena. The article is an attempt to discredit the paradigm of 'culture' as a pseudo-concept used commonly in cultural racism. This cultural racism routinely assumes 'culture' to be a natural given almost exactly as the pseudo-scientific paradigm 'race' was (and is still) used in some discourses of biological racism. If mentality X attributes categorical differences to different groups of people based on A and A is assumed to be natural, ahistorical, and/or metaphysical, then X is a racist mentality. Obviously, A does not have to be skin-colour or 'blood' in order for X to be racist.Conference Object Covalent immobilization of benzoylformate decarboxylase on magnetic solid support and its carboligation reactivity(WILEY-BLACKWELL, 2014) Tarhan, T.; Tural, B.; Tural, S.…Article Citation - WoS: 13Citation - Scopus: 17DROUGHT TOLERANCE INDICES OF SELECTED LANDRACES AND BREAD WHEAT (TRITICUM AESTIVUM L.) GENOTYPES DERIVED FROM SYNTHETIC WHEATS(CORVINUS UNIV BUDAPEST, 2016) Aktas, H.The present study was performed to determine performance of selected four synthetic derived bread wheat genotypes, four bread wheat landraces and four modern wheat genotypes under rain-fed and supplemented irrigation experiments based on randomized complete block design with four replications at GAP International Agricultural Research and Training Center, Diyarbakir, Turkey in 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 growing seasons. According to results of pairwise correlation and biplot analysis, significant and positive correlation was observed between grain yield in stress condition (Ys) and stress tolerant index (STI), geometric mean productivity (GMP), mean productivity (MP), harmonic productivity (HM), yield stability index (YSI), yield index (YI), drought resistance index (DI) and stress non-stress production index (SNPI) indicating these indices can be used as parameters for evaluating drought tolerant genotypes. Negative correlation between grain yield in stress (Ys) with SSI and no correlation with TOL indicated that these indices should be used in severe drought conditions for screening genotypes. Number seed in spike (NSS), plant height (PH) and thousand kernel weight (TKW) correlated with grain yield in stress conditions (Ys) according to biplot analysis, also genotypes with lower reduction relating to these traits had higher yield in stress conditions. According to results SEN-DER genotypes G7, G10, landrace group genotype G11 (Sorik) were determined as the most tolerant genotypes to be used to improve drought tolerant varieties, while modern wheat genotypes G4 (Ceyhan-99) and G2 (Tekin) were high productive in irrigation conditions and low productive in rain-fed conditions.Conference Object Investigation of cognitive functions with Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale's comprehension subtest and Mini-Mental State Examination in patients with end-stage renal diseases(WILEY-BLACKWELL, 2015) Karaoglan, Mehmet; Emre, M. Hanifi; Demirtas, Yasemin; Sahin, Idris; Taskapan, Hulya…Article Citation - WoS: 8EVALUATION OF BREAD AND EINKORN WHEAT UNDER IN VITRO DROUGHT STRESS(PAKISTAN AGRICULTURAL SCIENTISTS FORUM, 2017) Aslan, D.; Aktas, H.; Ordu, B.; Zencirci, N.The purpose of this study was to investigate the resistance of bread and einkorn wheat genotypes under in vitro conditions against drought stress during germination. Twelve bread and ten einkorn wheat genotypes were used as plant material and seven drought stress levels were applied based on a three-replicate factorial restricted randomized block design in order to investigate their effects on germination rate (GR), germinating power (GP), coleoptile length (CL), shoot length (SL), root length (RL), shoot root length ratio (SRLR), root fresh weight (RFW), root dry weight (RDW), and root fresh dry weight ratio (RFDWR) during the year 2014-2015. PEG - 6000 was used to evaluate the effect of drought stress under in vitro conditions on the wheat genotypes. The values of all traits were decreased by the increased effect of PEG levels (p = 0.05). The results of the variance analysis showed that the genotypes had significant statistical differences for the examined traits under drought stress (p < 0.05). According to the results of the GGE biplot analysis, of the total variation between the genotypes and traits investigated under drought stress (75.97%), PC1and PC2 represented 51.51% and 24.47%, respectively. In addition, einkorn wheat populations were located in the sector of GR, GP, and SRL, which means that these populations had a greater performance for these traits under drought stress conditions. Bread wheat and einkorn genotypes behaved differently for the traits under drought stress. It is considered that the results of the field and in vivo experiments for cold and drought stress will contribute to producing reliable suggestions.Article Citation - WoS: 1Reflections from a Matt Surface: On fine arts education in Turkey(TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD, 2016) Gurelli, KutluThe relatively short history of the modern art education in Turkey inevitably mirrors the constitutional predicaments that the young nation undergoes for nearly a century. The article aims to survey the pivotal implementations, starting from the early days of the Republic, and brings close together an evaluative reading about what has been done to keep the Turkish higher education in fine arts relative and up to date. Consequently, the main focus has been on and about the manifold complexities that arose as a result of such pitfalls like the absenceand in some cases, also the presenceof mandatory legislative frameworks, art's and art education's assumed role and promise in the university context and the both mutual and separate motives of academics and students in the field. It can be said that the symptomatic qualities put forward a set of associations in-between those issues, causing a similarity among the key problems. Most apparent of those are about to be on the difficulty of translationfrom one expression, structure, history, modality, experience or body of knowledge into another. Thus, the futility and dulling caused by the widespread institutional and individual custom of metaphrasing could be identified as a core issue whereas the necessity to paraphrase and to contextualize gains critical urgency. The concept of artistic research discussed in this context is a possible mode of structuring and programming the art education itself that could, it is hoped, be antidotal to the existing alienating and anaesthetic practicewhich becomes especially significant today in a public institutional education environment that is expected to assure a free, relevant and worthy higher arts education that still has a chance to avoid the distorting restraints faced extensively by the private sector.Article Citation - Scopus: 1Ulak (The Messenger): a mystic fable of Islamic messianism(ROUTLEDGE JOURNALS, TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD, 2015) Diken, Ebru ThwaitesAlthough modernity considers religion as a fable, religion has always been part of modern politics. The return of religion' in global politics, which marks the contemporary political and cultural imagination, accentuates this paradox. Religion has now become indispensible for the idea of truth. In this article, I approach this problematique by discussing the relationship between religion and art in terms of their relation to the idea of truth. In this respect, I focus on a Turkish film, Ulak (The Messenger), and analyze the film's thought about religion and the link it establishes between the artistic/narrative fable and the idea of truth. The film's choice of Gnosticism as the language of the dispossessed indicates a political position in relation to both the return of religion' and the popularity of the cultural turn in politics. On this basis, the article examines the film's take on the concept of the event as a miracle (in religious messianism), contrasting it with the philosophy of revolution. Thus, it navigates the ambivalent border between art and non-art, between the mystic fable and politics. With modernity, it is said that, art has replaced religion and borrowed its sacredness. A reverse process in place today: a resacralization of art and politics. Art and religion share a common element: illusion. However, art profanes illusion, while religion sacralizes it. On this basis, the article concludes that Ulak is a cinematic form of antiphilosophy. It is a spectacular movie as a critique of institutional religion, yet it is captivated by the understanding of truth as a miracle, by the truth of the fable. Following Badiou, who views art as a truth procedure, one could say that Ulak's potential to clarify the value of the truth event remains questionable.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 3A dome for the water: canopied fountains and cypress trees in Byzantine and early Ottoman Constantinople(CAMBRIDGE UNIV PRESS, 2016) Broilo, Federica; Shilling, B; Stephenson, P…Article Citation - WoS: 3Protection Coordination in Electrical Substation Part-2 Unit Protections (Differential and Distance Protection) -Case Study of Siddik Kardesler Substation (SKS), Istanbul, Turkey(GAZI UNIV, 2017) Shobole, Abdulfetah; Baysal, Mustafa; Wadi, Mohammed; Tur, Mehmet RidaPower systems must be protected against faults to ensure quality and reliable generation, transmission and distribution of power systems. It also explores the relationship between the internship experience and future career perception. The research participants included 25 students of gastronomy and the culinary arts studying in the faculty of tourism in a Turkish university. The data for the research was gathered through a semi-structured questionnaire. Overall, research findings revealed that the internship experience of gastronomy students consists of three major dimensions: benefits (learning about the hospitality industry and the kitchen environment, vocational contribution, and personal development), challenges (the problems related to employees, working conditions, and salary, and other issues such as adaptation problems, difficult customers, work accidents and mistakes, and the incompatibility of theoretical knowledge with the sector), and career perception (negative and pessimistic, negative but optimistic, and positive). Moreover, according to the findings of the study, it can be concluded that the level of benefits and challenges encountered is the key indicator regarding gastronomy students’ career choices. Since no previous studies on the internship experience of gastronomy students exist, it is believed that this study fills a gap in the literature. © 2019, © 2019 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.Article Marketization Process Effect on Welfare State in Transition Ekonomics(MALIYE BAKANLIGI, 2017) Ozdemir Cukadar, PinarThe aim of this study is to investigate how social policies and welfare state institutions have changed during the transition process in Central and Esastern Europe. The aim of present study was to classify the mental task EEG records by using Hjorth parameters. hi this study, EEG signals that recorded from 9 subjects were used. EEG signals were recorded by applying a experimental paradigm which contains five stimuli related to different mental task. These stimuli are defined as condition word mental subtraction spatial navigation right hand motor imagery and feet motor imagery Wavelet packet transform was used to obtain sub bands of EEC signals. Statistical parameters that consist of mobility, complexity and Mahalanobis distance were applied to sub-bands. Feature vectors were classified by using artificial neural network. When classification performances related to mental activities were examined, the best classification accuracy was obtained as nearly 80% for 'condition word - mental subtraction', ('spatial navigation feet motor imagery;' and 'spatial navigation - condition word'. The lowest classification accuracy was obtained for 'mental subtraction - right hand motor imagery,', 'condition word - right hand motor imagery' and 'spatial navigation right hand motor imagery'. The classification accuracies related to all stimuli that classifed among themselves were obtained as 77,61%.Article Citation - WoS: 9Conforming Haji Bektash: A Saint and His Followers between Orthopraxy and Heteropraxy(BRILL ACADEMIC PUBLISHERS, 2014) Soileau, MarkSince his death in the 13th century, the Anatolian Sufi saint Haji Bektash Veli has been the subject of a debate as to whether he conformed to the sharia, different parties having at different times portrayed him as either an antinomian charismatic mystic or a sharia-abiding Sufi scholar. This paper traces the course of the debate from the 14th century until today, situating the various interpretations in their historical contexts. As will be seen, interpretations of Haji Bektash's character are often influenced by that of his followers, the Bektashis, who have come to be known as antinomian. Because this non-conformity poses a problem for sharia-minded commentators, the debate is usually framed in terms that can be summarized as a dichotomy between orthopraxy and heteropraxy. Responding to this, Bektashis have instead reframed the dichotomy as one between what we can call esopraxy and exopraxy. The debate is still active today, showing that the concern for this 13th-century saint's praxis is still relevant in modern Turkey.
