    In this study, the polysemy of the verb dut-/tut- in the works of Old Anatolian Turkish was examined. The verb, which was used practically in the works of 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries, gained a lot of meanings except for its core meaning. Polysemy is a word’s gaining new meanings because of needs and other reasons. Also, it exists in the nature of the language. It has been encountered that words have a polysemy even when none of the factors has been switched in the language and the outer effects are not active. This condition indicates the richness of a language. While there are many reasons of polysemy, it can be said that its main reason is the need for it. As a living creature, language shows changes accordingly with the changing and developing world and the society. It is preferred to meet the needs by giving new meanings to the already existing word in the language instead of giving a new name to the word while encountering with a new conception. In this way, the word gains polysemy. Especially, verbs’ meeting the movements of kinds of creatures causes the semantic extension and accordingly polysemy by metaphor and metonymy. New connotations and figurative meanings come out by other creatures’ doing that action beside the verb’s core meaning or differently visualizing it in people’s mind by metaphor, metonymy and simile. Sometimes, a single word is formed by the approximation of the synonyms in time or their being confused with each other and that word becomes a polysemic word by gathering the meanings of two different words. Although it has been revealed by the researchers that polysemic words can cause ambiguity, it has been also indicated that this ambiguity can be resolved by disambiguation. The words that can cause ambiguity in the context can be eliminated through disambiguation by using the conceptions like syntax, semantics, and phonetics. In this study, the meanings of the verb dut-/tut- , which has been practical and polysemic from the historic terms of Turkish language to the present, confirmed and made a card index of its 34 meanings by scanning and depending on the contexts of the works of Old Anatolian Turkish like Yûnus Emre Dîvânı, Risâletü’n-Nushiyye, Yûsuf u Zelîhâ, Süheyl ü Nev-Bahâr, Kur’an Tercümesi, Kısas-ı Enbiya, Dede Korkut Kitabı, Marzuban-nâme and Gülistan Tercümesi. It has been revealed that the prosperous semantic world and the polysemy of the mentioned verb which has a lot more meaning than its meanings on the dictionary/indexes of the works and the Tarama Sözlüğü go back to historical period of Turkish.
