Exploring Zinc and Boron Chemo-Priming Effects on Low-Vigour Seed Germination and Seedling Establishment of Sunflower (Helianthus Annuus L.)
(2022) Kızılgeçi, Ferhat; Mokhtari, Negar Ebrahim Pour; Kızılgeçi, Ferhat; Ahmed, Raees; Iqbal, Muhammad Aamir; 16.02. Department of Seed Production / Tohumculuk Teknolojisi Bölümü; 16. Poor germination and suboptimal seedling growth constitute as prime factors in lowering the achene yield and seed oil content of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), while chemo-priming with micronutrients might serve as a biological viable strategy provided source and dose optimization are performed. A trial was executed to appraise the comparative impact of seed priming with different doses of micronutrients like boron (B) and zinc (Zn) on sunflower germination and seedling growth traits of sunflower. The experiment was comprised of six treatments of B (0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8, 1.6, 3.20 ppm) and Zn (0, 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 mM) each, while seed germination, root and seedling growth related traits were taken as experimental variables. The results revealed that all treatments remained ineffective regarding seed germination and seed vigour of sunflower, while B and Zn doses of 0.2 ppm and 12 mM respectively, enhanced seedling emergence rate and vigour. The Zn (8 mM) significantly improved root length along with their fresh and dry weights, while all doses of B imparted antagonistic effects on root attributes. Likewise, Zn (8 mM) remained superior for shoot length, fresh and dry weights, while higher doses of B remained contra-productive for shoot growth of sunflower.

Growth and Physiological Traits of Five Bread Wheat (Triticum Aestivum L.) Genotypes Are Influenced by Different Levels of Salinity and Drought Stress
(Parlar Scientific Publications (p S P), 2020) Kizilgeci, Ferhat; Kızılgeçi, Ferhat; Mokhtari, Negar Ebrahim Pour; Hossain, Akbar; 16.02. Turgor maintenance through osmotic adjustment can play a vital role in plant tolerance to drought and salinity. As per the evidence of the previous study, chemical polyethylene glycol (PEG) can create physiological drought under both salinity and water deficit conditions. Therefore, PEG is used for forcefully create osmotic stress to find out drought and salinity resistant crop cultivars at the early stage. Considering the essential role of PEG, the current observation was undertaken for understanding the effects of drought and salinity stress on several bread wheat genotypes at early developmental stage particularly during the seedling stage. Five bread wheat genotypes including four varieties such as 'Tekirdag', 'Ceyhan 99', 'Dine', 'Empire Plus' and a line 'DZ17-1' were used as seed material. To find out the genotypes which are tolerant to drought and salinity, all wheat genotypes were evaluated in four different concentration of NaCI for salinity stress (i.e., 0, 4, 8 and 12 dS/m) and four different concentration of PEG 6000 (i.e., 0, -0.2, -0.4, -0.6 MPa) for drought stress. All treatments were organised in a completely randomized design (CRD) and repeated three times. After observation, it is revealed that bread wheat cultivars 'Dine' and 'Ceyhan 99' were found tolerant of both drought and salinity stress at the seedling stage. The study also noticed that understanding of seedlings growth such as mean germination time (MGT), coleoptile length, seedling height, root length and relative water content (RWC) allow the selection of genotypes tolerance to drought and salinity. The information from the study will be helpful for examination of wheat genotypes which are suitable to cultivate under osmotic stress of both drought and salinity stress condition.

Influence of Different Priming Materials on Germination and Alpha-Amylase Enzyme of Hybrids Sorghum (Sorghum Bicolor L. Moench. X Sorghum Sudanense Staph.) Seeds
(2021) Kızılgeçi, Ferhat; Mokhtari, Negar Ebrahim Pour; Kızılgeçi, Ferhat; 16.02. Department of Seed Production / Tohumculuk Teknolojisi Bölümü; 16. School of Vocational Higher School of Kızıltepe/ Kızıltepe Meslek Yüksekokulu; 01. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu Üniversitesi
Germination is considered a critical step in the development cycle of the plant. But no information is available regarding seed priming with Putrescine, Jasmonic acid, Kinetin, Potassium Nitrate (KNO3), Salicylic acid at a time in the aged and non-aged seeds of sorghum cultivars. However, to know the effect of seed priming with the aforesaid chemicals in the aged and non-aged seeds of sorghum cultivars on the germination rate, germination vigour and alpha-amylase activity, research was conducted under laboratory condition, at Field Crops Central Research Institute, Ankara, Turkey. Aged and unaged seeds of Sugar Grazer II and Digestivo hybrid silage sorghum cultivars were used as the seed material of the experiment. Putrescine, Jasmonic acid, Kinetin, KNO3 and Salicylic acid were used as priming chemicals. The results revealed that aged and un-aged seeds of the cultivars showed different responses to similar chemical and KNO3 application to un-aged seeds had a positive effect on germination rate and alpha-amylase, Whereas Jasmonic acid and Putrescine applications had a positive effect on the aged seeds. Priming with putrescine, KNO3 and jasmonic acid showed the best results in the experiment.
