Article Analysis of Adaptation Processes and Anxiety Levels of University Students Staying with Earthquake Survivor Families in State Dormitories(BMC, 2025) Dag, Ibrahim; Olgac, KadriyeBackground This study aimed to examine the adaptation processes and anxiety levels of university students living with earthquake survivor families placed in state dormitories after recent major earthquakes.
Materials and Methods A descriptive, cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted in a state dormitory between May and August 2023. A total of 108 students participated using the snowball sampling method. Data were collected through a Descriptive Characteristics Form and the Beck Anxiety Scale. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics and linear regression using SPSS 25.0.
Results Among the participants, 49% reported increased frequency of contact with their families after the earthquake. Sharing the same dormitory space with earthquake-affected families led to limited personal space for 56%, emotional impact for 51%, and benefits such as emotional support for 56%. Additionally, 45% noted changes in their attitudes, 46% in their social lives, and 56% in their social responsibility awareness. Regression analysis showed that sharing the same environment with families explained 33.7% of the variance in Beck anxiety scores. A significant positive relationship was found between cohabitation with families and anxiety levels (B=0.337, p<0.001), where each unit increase in cohabitation was associated with a 5.379-point increase in anxiety scores.
Conclusions The findings indicate that post-earthquake family cohabitation significantly affects students' psychological and social well-being. Living in close proximity to affected family members increases anxiety levels. Providing psychological support services for students is crucial to reduce anxiety and facilitate post-disaster recovery and adaptation.Article The Effect of Buzzy and Finger Puppet Show on Children’s Pain, Fear, and Anxiety during Venipuncture in the Pediatric Emergency Department: A Randomized Controlled Trial(Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2026) Butun, Ahmet; Bayraktar, Sema; Olğaç Ak, Kadriye; Ak, Kadriye Olgac; Çatalbaş-acarsoy, MeltemBackground: Venipuncture in pediatric emergency departments commonly causes pain, fear, and anxiety in children, particularly those aged 4 to 6 years. Although non-pharmacological distraction techniques are recommended, comparative evidence remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Buzzy devices and finger puppet shows in reducing these outcomes. Methods: A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 102 children aged 4 to 6 years undergoing venipuncture in a tertiary pediatric emergency department. Participants were randomly assigned to 3 groups: Buzzy device (n = 34), finger puppet distraction (n = 34), and control (n = 34). Pain, fear, and anxiety were assessed using the Wong-Baker FACES Pain Rating Scale, Children's Fear Scale, and Children's Anxiety Meter-State before and after the procedure. Data were analyzed using SPSS, and the study was registered (NCT06849648). Results: No significant differences were found between groups in pre-procedure scores (P > .05). Post-procedure scores differed significantly (P < .001), with the control group reporting higher pain, fear, and anxiety compared to both intervention groups. Within-group analyses showed significant reductions in all outcomes in the Buzzy and finger puppet groups (P < .001), whereas no significant change was observed in the control group. Effect sizes were large for both interventions and higher in the Buzzy group (fear: eta(2) = 0.756; anxiety: eta(2) = 0.825; pain: eta(2) = 0.659) than the finger puppet group (fear: eta(2) = 0.657; anxiety: eta(2) = 0.690; pain: eta(2) = 0.512). Findings should be interpreted with caution due to baseline imbalances. Conclusion: Both interventions effectively reduced pain, fear, and anxiety, with Buzzy showing greater effectiveness. These findings support the use of simple, cost-effective distraction techniques in pediatric emergency care.Book Part Digital Addictions and Public Health From Theoretical Models to Community-Based Interventions(IGI Global, 2026) Olğaç Ak, Kadriye; Olğaç, KadriyeThis chapter presents a comprehensive public health perspective on digital addictions, focusing on problematic behaviors associated with smartphones, social media, online gaming, and other digital platforms.
