The Effect of the Covid-19 Pandemic Process on Hotel Enterprises: The Case of Şanlıurfa

Abstract

Purpose - The aim of this study is to examine the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the tourism sector in the context of hotel enterprises in Şanlıurfa. Design/methodology/Approach - In the research, 7 hotel enterprises in Şanlıurfa were interviewed and information was obtained from hotel managers by interview technique, which is one of the qualitative methods of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. In the light of the information received, the data were coded and analyzed. Findings - In the study, it was concluded that the Covid-19 pandemic negatively affected enterprises in terms of capacity, profitability, workforce and sales. All of the enterprises have received the "Safe Tourism Certificate". Enterprises have stated that there is a lot of deviation in their budgets in terms of their own capital and budget. However, it is seen that there is uncertainty about the measures and plans taken due to the unpredictability. It has been stated that the Covid-19 pandemic does not provide an opportunity for processing. In general, it is stated that they find the city advantageous in terms of tourism and a great development is expected in terms of tourism after the pandemic. Discussion - Although Covid-19 pandemi is accepted as a crisis, it is thought that it will adversely affect the tourism sector and the economy for a long time. Especially considering that it affects enterprises economically and deviating in their budgets, decision -makers, businesses, managers, investors should be prepared and take measures against the possibility of many crisis in general, not only this situation.

Amaç - Bu çalışmanın amacı Covid-19 pandemisinin turizm sektöründeki etkisini Şanlıurfa’da bulunan otel işletmeleri özelinde incelemektir. Yöntem - Araştırmada Şanlıurfa ilinde bulunan 7 otel işletmesi ile görüşülerek Covid-19 pandemisinin etkisi nitel yöntemlerden görüşme tekniği ile otel yöneticilerinden bilgiler alınmıştır. Alınan bilgiler ışığında veriler kodlanarak incelenmiştir. Bulgular - Araştırmada Covid-19 pandemisinin işletmeleri kapasite, karlılık, işgücü ve satışlar konusunda olumsuz etkilediği sonucuna varılmıştır. İşletmelerin tamamı “Güvenli Turizm Sertifikası” almıştır. İşletmeler öz sermayeleri ve bütçe konusunda da bütçelerinde oldukça fazla sapma yaşandığını ifade etmişlerdir. Ancak alınan tedbirler ve planlamalar konusunda da öngörülemezlik nedeniyle belirsizlik yaşandığı görülmektedir. Covid-19 pandemisinin işlemelere fırsat sunmadığı ifade edilmiştir. Genel olarak kenti turizm açısından avantajlı buldukları ve pandemi sonrasında turizm açısından büyük bir gelişim beklendiği ifade edilmektedir. Tartışma - Covid-19 pandemisi bir kriz olarak kabul edilmekle birlikte turizm sektörünü ve ekonomiyi uzun dönem olumsuz etkileyeceği düşünülmektedir. Özellikle ekonomik olarak işletmeleri etkilediği, bütçelerinde sapma yaşandığı düşünüldüğünde, sadece bu durum değil genel olarak birçok kriz yaşanma olasılığına karşı sektörde karar alıcılar, işletmeler, yöneticiler, yatırımcılar hazırlıklı olmalı ve önlemleri almalıdırlar.
