Merkez Efendi ve Külliyesi

Abstract

Bu çalışmada, Osmanlı Dönemi'nde ilmî ve manevî yönleriyle ön plana çıkmış olan Merkez Efendi'yi, onunla özdeşleşen Merkez Efendi Külliyesi'ni tarihî ve mimarî yönleriyle incelenmektedir. Merkez Efendi, XVI. yüzyılda yaşamış, Halvetiyye tarikatının Sünbüliyye koluna mensup, ilim ve irfan sahibi bir zâttır. Hayatı boyunca irşâd faaliyetleri yürüten, saray çevresiyle güçlü ilişkiler kuran Merkez Efendi, özellikle Şah Sultan'ın desteğiyle İstanbul'un Mevlanakapı semtinde külliyeye dönüşecek olan bir tekke tesis etmiştir. Bu yapı zamanla sadece tasavvufî bir merkez değil, aynı zamanda sosyal yardımlaşma ve kültürel faaliyetlerin yürütüldüğü bir kurum hâline gelmiştir. Tez kapsamında hem Merkez Efendi'nin biyografisi hem de onun adına inşa edilen külliyenin yapısal özellikleri, işlevleri ve vakıf sistemi içerisindeki yeri arşiv belgeleri ışığında ele alınmaktadır. Tezde tarihsel araştırma yöntemi esas alınmış; arşiv belgeleri, vakfiye metinleri, salnâmeler ve saha gözlemleriyle desteklenmiştir. Merkez Efendi Külliyesi'ne dair yapılan değerlendirmelerle klasik menkıbevî anlatılardan azade akademik ve belgeli bir yaklaşım ortaya konulmuştur. Külliyeye ait cami, türbe, dârülkurrâ, çilehâne, hazîre, hamam gibi yapılar ayrı başlıklar altında değerlendirilmiş; bu birimlerin işlevleri ve toplumsal etkileri analiz edilmiştir. Sonuç olarak bu çalışma, Merkez Efendi'nin bir tarikat şeyhi olmasından ziyade, Osmanlı şehir kültüründe etkin bir şahsiyet olduğunu; adına tesis edilen külliyenin ise klasik vakıf sisteminin başarılı bir örneği olarak kurumsal ve mimarî açıdan önem arz ettiğini ortaya koymuştur. Bu yönüyle tez, Osmanlı toplumunun dinî ve sosyal yapısının daha iyi anlaşılmasına imkân tanımaktadır.

This thesis aims to examine both the intellectual and spiritual identity of Merkez Efendi—one of the prominent figures of the Ottoman Sufi tradition—and the historical and architectural development of the Merkez Efendi Complex, which is closely associated with his legacy. Within the scope of the study, Merkez Efendi's biography and the structural components, functions, and role of the complex within the Ottoman waqf system have been analyzed based on archival sources. Merkez Efendi was a 16th-century scholar and Sufi affiliated with the Sünbüliyye branch of the Halveti order. He played a significant role in religious guidance and established strong ties with the Ottoman court. With the support of Şah Sultan, daughter of Sultan Selim I, he founded a dervish lodge in the Mevlanakapı district of Istanbul, which later evolved into a full-fledged complex. This institution became not only a center of spiritual instruction but also a hub for social aid and cultural activities. The research is based on the historical method, supported by archival documents, waqf records, court registers, yearbooks (salnames), and field observations. Moving beyond hagiographical narratives, the study offers a document-based and analytical approach to the subject. Each structure within the complex such as the mosque, mausoleum, dervish lodge, dârülkurrâ (Qur'anic school), hammam, hazîre (graveyard), and retreat cell—has been examined in terms of architectural features and socio-religious functions. In conclusion, the thesis demonstrates that Merkez Efendi was not only a spiritual guide but also a prominent cultural figure in Ottoman urban life. The complex bearing his name represents an exemplary model of the classical waqf institution in the Ottoman world. By combining historical documentation with architectural and cultural analysis, this study contributes a comprehensive perspective to understanding religious and social dynamics in the classical Ottoman era.
