“Contrast Freak”: Durkheim’s Homo Duplex Debate

Abstract

This study focuses on Durkheim's homo duplex debate, which has been ignored for a long time. It is seen as a general acceptance that Durkheim, which is evaluated within functionalism, concentrates on structure and neglects the individual in the structure-actor dualism. Durkheim's emphasis on social structure, who had important contributions in the establishment of functionalism, formed the basis of macro discussions, he has been subjected to serious criticism in micro discussions based on the individual and the actions of the individual. While his emphasis on macro structure stands out in almost all his works, from the social division of labor to methods and religious studies, it would not be wrong to say that he conducts individual discussion, albeit weakly. With his emphasis on the fact that sociology should be a separate branch of science, especially psychology and philosophy, he revealed the conditions for dealing with social phenomena. Looking at his general works of course, Durkheim, who seems conservative on the one hand and a serious moral philosopher on the other, Although he puts forward a macro perspective in understanding the social, especially in recent religious studies, we see that he tends towards the debates on individuals, which he states has a social and biological dual structure. He evaluates the individual as a biological structure mediated by culture. With this study, it will be tried to show that Durkheim's discussion of the individual is actually an important part of his theory with a critical evaluation of his own studies. It will be emphasized that the Homo duplex debate is not independent from the social, political and cultural climate of the period, and that he has an individual-oriented tendency in recent studies.

Bu çalışmada Durkheim’ın uzun zamandır görmezden gelinen homo duplex tartışması konu edinilmiştir. İşlevselcilik içinde değerlendirilen Durkheim’ın yapı-fail düalizminde yapıya ağırlık verdiği ve bireyi ihmal ettiği genel kabul olarak görülmektedir. İşlevselciliğin kuruluşunda önemli katkıları olan Durkheim’ın özellikle toplumsal yapıya vurgusu makro tartışmaların temelini oluşturmuş, buna kaşın bireyi ve bireyin eylemlerini esas alan mikro tartışmalarda ise ciddi eleştirilere maruz kalmıştır. Toplumsal işbölümünden yöntem ve din çalışmalarına kadar neredeyse tüm çalışmalarında makro yapıya vurgusu öne çıkarken, zayıf da olsa birey tartışması yürüttüğünü söylemek yanlış olmayacaktır. Sosyolojinin özellikle psikoloji ve felsefeden ayrı bir bilim dalı olması gerektiğine yaptığı vurguyla da toplumsal olgunun ele alınma şartlarını ortaya koymuştur. Tabii çalışmalarının geneline bakıldığında bir yandan muhafazakâr öte yandan ciddi bir ahlak felsefecisi gibi görünen Durkheim, toplumsalı anlamada makro bir bakış açısını ön plana çıkarsa da özellikle son dönem özellikle de din çalışmalarında bir yanıyla toplumsal diğer yanıyla da biyolojik ikili bir yapıya sahip olduğunu belirttiği bireye tartışmasına yöneldiğini görmekteyiz. Bireyi kültürle dolayımlanan biyolojik bir yapı olarak değerlendirir. Bu çalışmayla da, Durkheim’ın birey tartışmasının aslında teorisinin önemli bir parçası olduğu kendi çalışmalarının eleştirel bir değerlendirmesiyle gösterilmeye çalışılacaktır. Homo duplex tartışmasının dönemin sosyal, siyasal ve kültürel ikliminden bağımsız olmadığı ve son dönem çalışmalarında birey eksenli bir yönelim gösterdiği vurgulanacaktır.
