Abstract
Sharia court registers (şer'iyye sicilleri) constitute fundamental sources for understanding the legal, social, and administrative functioning of Ottoman urban society. These registers not only document relations among individuals but also render visible the legal ties established between society and the state, thereby offering invaluable insights into the past, particularly in contexts where written and oral memory remain limited. Despite their rich evidentiary potential, studies based on sharia court records in the case of Mardin have remained limited, indicating that these sources have not yet been sufficiently explored. This study centers on legal representation practices in Mardin through the transcription and analysis of the 185 numbered Mardin Sharia Court Register, which contains judicial records dated between 1890 and 1892. An examination of the register reveals that the majority of entries concern the appointment of legal representatives (dava vekilleri). This finding demonstrates that the institution of legal representation was widely practiced in Mardin and that, although a formally institutionalized bar association had not yet emerged, a functional and specialized professional group effectively existed. By analyzing legal representation practices, the study evaluates patterns of access to justice and rights-claiming among the inhabitants of Mardin. Within this framework, it also examines the interactions of Muslim and non-Muslim communities with one another and with the state in light of contemporary legal practices. In this respect, the research aims to demonstrate that sharia court registers are not merely legal documents but also multilayered historical sources that illuminate the formation of legal culture in the provinces.
