Abstract

This study examines the life, scholarly personality, and place in the science of syntax (nahw) of Cemâluddîn el-Fâkihî (d. 972/1564), one of the leading linguistic scholars who was raised in Mecca, a major center of learning in the tenth century of the Hijrî calendar, as well as his work entitled Sharh Kitâb al-Hudûd fî al-Nahw, in which he addresses the concepts, technical terms, and definitions of the science of syntax. The research addresses the intellectual backdrop of scholarly activity in the Hejaz region during the transitional period from Mamluk to Ottoman rule, situating el-Fâkihî's place in the fields of language and grammar, as well as the methodological originality of his work. Employing source scanning, textual analysis, and comparative methods, the study demonstrates that the author restructured the technical terms of syntax using the conceptual tools of the discipline of logic (such as genus, differentia, etc.), thereby achieving terminological consistency. The research further reveals that in defining syntactic terms, Fâkihî adhered rigorously to the principle of jâmiʿ li-afrâdihî mâniʿ li-aghyârihî (comprehensive of all instances and exclusive of all others), and that he favored an eclectic and didactic style - primarily adopting the terminology of the Basran linguistic school while also incorporating the views and technical terms of the Kufan linguistic school. Furthermore, he solidly grounded the rules, terms, and definitions pertaining to the science of syntax by drawing on textual evidence (istishhâd) from Quranic verses, prophetic traditions (hadîth), poetry, and prose. In the work in question, he skillfully integrated the original text with its commentary, successfully applying the method of mazj (interweaving or blending). Accordingly, this study brings to the scholarly literature Fâkihî's central role and original contribution to the evolution of the classical tradition of syntax and terminological science (hudûd).
