19. yüzyılda İngiliz ve Amerikalı seyyahların Diyarbekir izlenimleri

Abstract

Bu çalışma 19. yüzyılda Diyarbekir'e gelen İngiliz ve ABD'li seyyahların Diyarbekir şehrine dair izlenimlerine ve anlatılarına odaklanmıştır. Çalışma beş bölümden oluşmaktadır. Giriş bölümünde seyahat yazınının batıdaki tarihçesi ve gelişim süreci hakkında kısa bilgiler verilmiş, tezin amaç, yöntem ve sınırlılıklarına değinilmiştir. Birinci bölüm çalışmada ele alınan Batılı seyyahların kısa biyografilerine ve profillerine ayrılmıştır. İkinci bölümde 19. yüzyılda seyyahların anlatılarında Diyarbekir tarihi ve coğrafyasına değinilmiştir. Üçüncü bölüm 19. yüzyılda seyyahların gözünden Diyarbekir'deki yapılara odaklanmıştır. Dördüncü bölümde 19. yüzyılda seyyahların gözünden Diyarbekirliler ve şehirdeki sosyal hayata dair anlatılara yer verilmiştir. Beşinci bölüm ise seyyahların gözünden Diyarbekir'de genel asayiş ve yöneticilere dair anlatılara ayrılmıştır. Bu çalışmada 19. yüzyılda Diyarbekir bütünüyle Batılı seyyah anlatıları üzerinden değerlendirilmiştir. İncelenen dönemdeki bulgular dikkate alındığında seyyah anlatıları surların ihtişamlı görüntüsü ve şehrin güvenliğine sağladığı katkı konusunda genellikle olumlu, evler, sokaklar ve şehrin genel temizliği gibi konularda genellikle eleştireldir. Seyyahların toplumsal ilişkilerle ilgili özellikle Müslüman nüfusa yönelik anlatılarında ön yargılarına yenik düştükleri anlaşılmıştır. Müslümanlar için bağnaz, gerici, şiddet eğilimli gibi genel yargılamalara varıldığı, topluma yönelik ders verici ve üstten bir dil kullanıldığı görülmüştür. Seyyah anlatılarında yönetim konusunda başarılı valilerin varlığından söz edilmekle birlikte şehrin geçirdiği dönemle bağlantılı olarak Diyarbekir ve çevresinde genel bir asayişsizlik durumunun olduğu belirtilmiştir. 19. yüzyıl boyunca şehre gelen Batılı seyyahların çeşitli konular hakkındaki izlenimleri ve anlatıları üzerinden ele alınan Diyarbekir, bu zaman zarfında geçirdiği süreçlere ve seyyahların algı ve üslubuna bağlı olarak seyahatnamelerde hem olumlu hem eleştirel nitelemelerle yer almıştır.

This study focuses on the impressions and narratives of British and American travelers who came to Diyarbekir in the 19th century about the city of Diyarbekir. This study consists of five chapters. In the introduction part of the study, brief information about the history and development process of travel literature in the West is given, and the purpose, method and limitations of the thesis are mentioned. The first part the study is devoted to short biographies and profiles of Western travelers. In the second chapter, the history and geography of Diyarbekir from the eyes of travelers in the 19th century is mentioned. The third chapter focuses on the structures in Diyarbekir through the eyes of travelers in the 19th century. The fourth chapter focuses on the narratives of the people of Diyarbekir and the social life in the city through the eyes of the travelers in the 19th century. The fifth chapter is devoted to the traveler's narratives about the general public order and administrators in Diyarbekir from the eyes of the travelers. In this study, Diyarbekir in the 19th century was evaluated through Western traveler narratives. Considering the findings in the examined period, it is seen that the traveler's narratives are generally positive about the magnificent view of the walls and the contribution they provide to the security of the city, and they are generally negative about the issues streets and general cleanlinessof the city. In the narratives of the travelers about social relations, it was understood that they succumbed to their prejudices against the Muslim population. It is seen that Muslims are judged to be bigoted, violent, and an instructive and derogatory language is used on the society. Although it is mentioned that there are successful governors in the administration, it is stated that there is a general disorder in connection with the period of the city has gone through. Throughout the 19th century, Diyarbekir has been the subject of different narratives with the statements of travelers who conveyed their impressions depending on various variables, and it took place in travel books with both positive and critical, depending on the narrative styles of the travelers.
