A Philosophical Analysis of the Suicide Problem in the Movie Taste of Cherry (1997)

Abstract

in this article, suicide highlighted in Abbas Kiarostami’s Ta’me Gīlās (Taste of Cherry, 1997) has been analyzed from a philosophical perspective. It is seen that suicide is discussed in various contexts in the movie. Based on this, the search for Badii, who has decided to commit suicide, and the events that develop because of this search have been evaluated as an existential problem. The film’s themes of indifference to life, the influence of fate of people, and death are interpreted in Stoic and Epicurean philosophy. In addition, the relationship between suicide has been evaluated with the comments made on the contempt of the body, and the anxiety and nothingness that the individual experiences in the face of life and death have been addressed. Because suicide is also an existential issue, it is also observed that the issue of suicide is put in a bracket (epoché) in the film. In this context, the film deals with the concern of suicide by stripping it of its factual, cultural, and religious contents. The method applied in the article is to examine the dialogues in the film from a philosophical perspective and to analyze the content of the technique exhibited in the movie.

Bu makalede Abbas Kiarostami’nin Ta’m-e Gīlās (Kirazın Tadı 1997) filminde öne çıkarılan intihar sorunu felsefî açıdan analiz edilmiştir. Filmde intiharın çeşitli bağlamlarda tartışıldığı görülmektedir. Buradan hareketle intihar etmeye karar vermiş olan Badii’nin arayışı ve bu arayış neticesinde gelişen olaylar varoluşsal bir sorun olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Bu doğrultuda yaşam karşısında kayıtsızlık, kaderin insan üzerine etkisi ve ölüm teması Stoacı ve Epiküros felsefesi bağlamında yorumlanmıştır. Bununla birlikte bedenin hor görülmesi üzerine yapılan yorumlarla intihar ilişkisi değerlendirilmiş olup yaşam ve ölüm karşısında bireyin içine düştüğü kaygı ve hiçlik ele alınmıştır. Çünkü intihar aynı zamanda varoluşsal bir sorundur. Filmde intihar sorunu bir ayraç içine (epokhe) alındığı da gözlemlenmektedir. Bu çerçevede film, intihar sorununu olgusal, kültürel ve dinî içeriklerinden sıyırmak suretiyle işlemektedir. Makalede uygulanan yöntem, filmde geçen diyalogları felsefî açıdan incelemek ve filmde sergilenen yöntemin içeriğini analiz etmektir.
