Vanlı Memduh Selim Bey ve Jîn Dergisi (1918-1919)

Abstract

Memduh Selim Bey (1880-1976) from Van started his education life in Van, the city where he was born, and completed his primary and secondary education there. Then, in order to continue his higher education, he went to Istanbul, the cultural and intellectual center of the period. During his time in Istanbul, he was the general secretary of the Hêvî Student Society, which was founded in 1912 and where Kurdish students came together and carried out cultural, social and political activities. This society carried out important studies for the revival of Kurdish identity and culture in the last periods of the Ottoman Empire and published publications such as Roj-î Kurd, Hetaw-î Kurd in this direction. Memduh Selim Bey’s first articles appeared in Jin magazine (1918-1919). He contributed to the Kurdish enlightenment of the period by writing articles on social and political issues in that publication. In this study, the articles written by Memduh Selim Bey in Jîn magazine, which continued its publication life between 1918-1919, will be analyzed. Memduh Selim Bey’s articles in this journal are of great importance both in terms of reflecting the political and social atmosphere of the period and in terms of understanding the intellectual foundations of the Kurdish enlightenment movement. These articles reveal the author’s intellectual background, his perspective on social issues, and his efforts towards the construction of Kurdish identity. Therefore, this study aims to contribute to understanding both the author’s world of thought and the sociopolitical dynamics of the period by examining Memduh Selim Bey’s writings in Jin magazine in detail.

Vanlı Memduh Selim Bey (1880-1976), eğitim hayatına doğduğu şehir olan Van’da başlamış, ilk ve orta öğrenimini burada tamamlamıştır. Ardından, yükseköğrenimini sürdürmek amacıyla dönemin kültürel ve entelektüel merkezi olan İstanbul’a gitmiştir. İstanbul’da bulunduğu dönemde, 1912 yılında kurulan ve Kürt öğrencilerin bir araya gelerek kültürel, sosyal ve siyasi faaliyetler yürüttüğü Hêvî Talebe Cemiyeti’nin genel sekreterliğini üstlenmiştir. Bu cemiyet, Osmanlı’nın son dönemlerinde Kürt kimliği ve kültürünün canlanmasına yönelik önemli çalışmalar yürütmüş ve bu doğrultuda Roj-î Kurd, Hetaw-î Kurd gibi yayın organlarını çıkarmıştır. Memduh Selim Bey’in ilk yazıları Jîn Dergisi (1918-1919) dergisinde karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Memduh Selim Bey bu yazılarında sosyal ve siyasal konulara dair makaleler kaleme alarak, dönemin Kürt aydınlanmasına katkıda bulunmuştur. Bu çalışmada, Memduh Selim Bey’in 1918-1919 yılları arasında yayın hayatına devam eden Jîn dergisinde kaleme aldığı yazılar analiz edilecektir. Jîn dergisi, millî kimlik, dil ve kültür gibi konulara odaklanan bir yayın olarak dikkat çekmektedir. Memduh Selim Bey’in bu dergideki yazıları, hem dönemin siyasi ve sosyal atmosferini yansıtması açısından hem de Kürt aydınlanma hareketinin düşünsel temellerini anlamak açısından büyük önem taşımaktadır. Bu makaleler, yazarın entelektüel birikimini, toplumsal meselelere bakış açısını ve Kürt kimliğinin inşasına yönelik çabalarını ortaya koymaktadır. Dolayısıyla, bu çalışma, Memduh Selim Bey’in Jîn dergisindeki yazılarını detaylı bir şekilde inceleyerek hem yazarın düşünce dünyasını hem de dönemin sosyopolitik dinamiklerini anlamaya katkı sağlamayı amaçlamaktadır.
