Article Assessment of preoperative anxiety and negative automatic thoughts in patients waiting for corneal transplantation(Publishing Office of the University of Rzeszow, 2024) Tanrıverdi, Seher; Şen, Mehmet Ali; Genç, HasanIntroduction and aim. In patients waiting for organ transplantation, increased waiting time can increase anxiety by creating negative automatic thoughts. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between corneal transplant recipients' negative automatic thoughts and anxiety before organ transplantation. Material and methods. The population of this correlational descriptive study consisted of 108 patients waiting for cornea transplantation in the Eye Bank unit of a hospital in the south east region of Türkiye. The data were obtained from the patients presented to the ophthalmology clinic for transplantation between September and December 2022. A patient information form, the Negative Automatic Thoughts Scale, and the Trait Anxiety Scale were used to collect the data. Percentage distribution, arithmetic mean, logistic regression and correlation analysis were used in the data analysis. Results. It was determined that the mean score of the negative automatic thoughts of the transplant patients participating in the study was 100.69±47.83, and the trait anxiety mean score was 53.06±6.07. There was a positive relationship between negative automatic thoughts and trait anxiety at a moderate level, which was statistically significant (p<0.05, r=0.53). Conclusion. It was determined in the study that the patients' negative automatic thoughts and trait anxiety were high, and their anxiety increased as the negative automatic thoughts increased.Article Determination of body image and self-efficacy levels in patients after cornea transplantation(Elsevier, 2024) Genç, Hasan; Tanrıverdi, Seher; Şen, Mehmet AliPurpose: The study aimed to determine body image and levels after surgery in cornea transplant patients. Materials and methods: The population of this cross-sectional study was composed of 383 patients presented to the Eye Bank unit of a University Hospital after corneal transplantation. Sample size of 193 patients was calculated with 0.5 power, a margin of error of 5%, representing 95% of the universe. The data were collected through face-to-face interviews with the patients by the researcher and the study was completed with 178 patients in September-November 2022. The data were collected using a Patient Information Form, the Body Image Scale, and the General Self-Efficacy Scale. Parametric tests, Pearson Correlation, Student's t-test, and One-Way Analysis of Variance tests were performed were used in the data analysis. Results: It was determined that the mean Body Image Scale score of the transplant patients participating in the study was 159.41 ± 36.99 and the mean Self-Efficacy Scale score was 30.37 ± 8.31. When the comparison of the mean scores was examined, the difference between the mean scores of gender, marital status, occupation, and body image scale was statistically significant (p < .05), while the difference between the self-efficacy mean scores was not statistically significant (p > .05). There was a positive, moderately strong significant relationship between body image and the self-efficacy of the patients (p < .01) (r = .57). Conclusion: It was found that the patient's body image and self-efficacy levels were high, and self-efficacy increased as the body image increased.Article An Examination of the Relationship Between Spirituality and Life Satisfaction Among Patients Awaiting Corneal Transplantation in Türkiye(2024) Şen, Mehmet Ali; Genç, Hasan; Tanrıverdi, SeherBackground: Transplant surgery significantly influences patients’ spirituality and life satisfaction, reflecting the diverse beliefs and cultures of those awaiting the procedure. Aim: This study aimed to explore the relationship between spirituality and life satisfaction in patients awaiting corneal transplantation. Methods: This relational descriptive study involved 101 patients on the waiting list for corneal transplantation. Data were collected using a Patient Information Form, the Life Satisfaction Scale, and the Spirituality Scale. Percentage distribution, arithmetic mean, and Pearson correlation analysis were employed for data analysis. Results: The majority of the participants were married (95%), with 56.4% being male and 26.7% retired. About 46.5% had completed primary education. The mean Life Satisfaction Scale score among the patients was 21.83 ± 8.96, and the mean Spirituality Scale Score was 20.49 ± 4.15 before corneal transplantation. A positive, albeit weak, relationship was found between the patients’ life satisfaction and spirituality levels, which was statistically significant (p < 0.01, r=0.37). Additionally, a weakly positive and significant correlation was noted between age and life satisfaction (p < 0.05, r=0.19). Conclusion: The study found that patients exhibited high levels of life satisfaction and spirituality, with life satisfaction increasing alongside spirituality. It was therefore concluded that care should be provided to patients with a psychosocial and emotional approach, aiming to meet their spiritual needs and enhance their life satisfaction prior to corneal transplantation.Article The Relationship Between Care Burden and Psychological Resilience of Caregivers of Elderly Surgical Patients: a Descriptive Study(2024) Tanrıverdi, Seher; Genç, Hasan; Sabağ, Muhammed El; Bakşi, İhsanBackground: The care burden on caregivers of elderly surgical patients causes physical, psychological, economic, and social problems arising from the care undertaken by the caregiver. The level of psychological resilience is important in coping with these problems. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between care burden and the psychological resilience status of caregivers of elderly surgical patients. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with caregivers of elderly surgical patients in the surgical clinics of educational research and a state hospital. The study was completed with 151 caregivers representing the population. The data were collected using the Patient Descriptive Characteristics Form, Caregiver Descriptive Characteristics Form, the ZARIT Care Burden Scale adapted to the clinic, and the Brief Psychological Resilience Scale. Statistical analyses were conducted using the Student T-test, the One- Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test for comparing scale score averages between groups, and Pearson Correlation tests for examining the relationship between variables. Results: It was found that 52.3% of the patients in the study sample were male, 96.7% were married, and 15.9% were secondary school graduates. The study determined that the mean Care Burden Scale score of the caregivers of elderly surgical patients was 31.53 ± 8.94 at a mild level, and the mean score of Psychological Resilience was 17.29 ± 3.35 at a moderate level. The correlation analysis between the scales found a negative, weak relationship between care burden and psychological resilience, which was statistically significant (P < 0.01) (r=-0.34). Conclusion: It was observed that the psychological resilience levels of caregivers decreased as the care burden increased and that the psychological resilience levels decreased as the caregiving time per hour per day increased. New studies can be conducted to investigate whether interventions aimed at reducing the care burden are effective in increasing psychological resilience levels.
