Article Ameloriate Effect of Glucose Monohydrate on Nicotine Sulfate-Induced Toxicity and Teratogenicity in Xenopus Embryos: an Experimental Study(Middle Pomeranian Sci Soc Env Prot, 2023) Emre, Mustafa; Tunc, Erdal; Sertdemir, Yasar; Pekmezekmek, Ayper BogaIt is well documented that nicotine causes low birth weight, preterm birth, pregnancy difficulties, lower fertility, inhibition of spermatogenesis, and decreased steroidogenesis and potassium channels conductance of Xenopus oocytes. Lung cancer is the most well-known adverse impact of nicotine. This work used a 96-hour FETAX test to examine how concurrent administration of glucose monohydrate modifies the effects of exposure to nicotine, nicotine sulfate, and/or glucose on ion channels and membrane potential in Xenopus leavis embryos at an early stage of development. In-vitro fertilised embryos were treated with nicotine and glucose alone or in combination for this aim, and the effects of those treatments were then assessed for potential teratogenic effects. At the conclusion of the FETAX technique, the ratios of healthy, abnormal, and dead embryos were calculated, and the length of embryos in each treatment group was assessed. The ratios of abnormal and dead embryos were considerably higher with nicotine treatment alone compared to controls. Compared to the results of the nicotine-alone treatment group, the ratio of aberrant embryos was marginally reduced by concurrent glucose and nicotine therapy. In contrast, the ratio of normal embryos was raised. Additionally, treatments with glucose, nicotine, and Nic+Glu significantly altered the resting membrane potentials of fertilised oocytes (p < 0.001). Our findings indicated that the simultaneous treatment groups that also received glucose had a protective impact on embryos. Such structured, more sophisticated research is required to confirm these findings.Article Can Serum Biomarker Values from Second-Trimester Aneuploidy Screening Predict the development of Retinopathy of Prematurity in Premature Infants?(Kare Publishing, 2024) Sabanci, Senol; Kucuk, Mehmet Fatih; Savas, Hasan Basri; Suren, Elcin; Erol, Muhammet Kazim; Yavuz, And; Sipahioglu, HaydarObjectives: This study aimed to evaluate serum biomarker values measured during second-trimester aneuploidy screening in terms of their predictive ability for the development of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in premature infants. Methods: This retrospective cohort study evaluated the data of 1985 idiopathic premature infants who underwent ROP screening from 2016 to 2022. The infants were divided into two groups according to the presence of ROP, and those with ROP were further evaluated in two subgroups based on the presence of proliferation. Comparisons were made concerning the serum multiple of the median values of unconjugated estriol (uE3), human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) among aneuploidy screening biomarkers. Results: While 1628 premature infants were in the non-ROP group, 357 were in the ROP group. Of the infants with ROP, 72 were in the proliferative ROP group and 285 in the non-proliferative ROP group. There was no significant difference in the multiple of the median values of the evaluated serum biomarkers (uE3, hCG, and AFP) between the ROP and non-ROP groups or between the proliferative ROP, non-proliferative ROP, and non-ROP groups. Conclusion: The multiple of the median values of second-trimester aneuploidy screening serum biomarkers were not able to predict the development of ROP in premature infants. This result may have been caused by the fact that the blood tests were taken only once and in the same weeks.Article Evaluation of Children with Hearing Loss in a Special Education Centre in Mardin by TEDIL-3 Test(Kulak Burun Boğaz ve Baş Boyun Cerrahisi, 2022) Sarı, Neslihan; İmrak, İbrahim HalilABS TRACT Objective: To assess the conditions based on Early Language Development Test (TEDIL-3) scores after rehabilitation in children with hearing loss who continue special education in a single centre in Mardin, a city in southeast Türkiye. Material and Methods: Demography, auditory findings, depression status of 53 (53% male, 47% female, aged 3-7 years) children, given a special education, in July and October 2021, were evaluated by TEDIL-3 test. Group P consisted of patients with scores above average and F group consist of children having scores below average on the TEDIL-3 test. Scores in different characteristics and between groups were compared with analysis of correlations and factor analysis. Results: As a result of the study, 30 (57%) children have been found to be in Group P, 23 (43%) of them in Group F. Statistical significance and higher scores were seen in children with families with monolanguage than bilanguage (p<0.05). Diagnosis age was higher in Group F (mean±SD; 18.5±18.1) than group P (mean±SD; 7.5±11.4). Cochlear implant age was correlated with diagnostic age (p=0.013, n=35, r=0.64). Although neonatal hearing screening (NHS) does not have prognostic significance, in the NHS, 41.5% of children were false positives and 7.5% of them had no application to NHS (p>0.05). Conclusion: Bilingualism and the higher age of diagnosis in hearing loss are major negative factors that we encounter in the auditory rehabilitation by TEDIL scores in Mardin. Correct and compulsory implementation in NHS and raising awaireness on both issues will contribute to auditory rehabilitaion in children in MardinArticle Citation - Scopus: 3Evaluation of Frontal QRS-T Angle in Patients with Coronary Artery Ectasia(Sociedade Brasileira de Cardiologia, 2023) Karahan, Mehmet Zülkif; Aktan, Adem; Güzel, Tuncay; Kayan, Fethullah; Günlü, SerhatBackground: Coronary artery ectasia (CAE) is defined by focal enlargement of the coronary artery exceeding 1.5 times the adjacent normal segment. CAE can often cause arrhythmias, heart failure, sudden death, and myocardial ischemia. Ischemia due to microvascular dysfunction may be responsible for the ventricular heterogeneity in CAE. Objectives: The aim of our study was to evaluate the frontal QRS-T angle in patients with CAE. Methods: Our study included 55 patients with CAE and 50 individuals in the control group. Demographic characteristics and electrocardiographic parameters were compared between the two groups. Categorical variables were compared using the chi-square test. Continuous variables were compared using unpaired Student’s t-test. P values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. The frontal QRS-T angle was calculated from 12-lead electrocardiograms (ECGs) using the automatic report from the electrocardiography machine. Results: The average age of patients with CAE was 63.2 ± 3.4 years, with 18 women among them. The control group had an average age of 61.1 ± 3.2 years, with 28 women included. There was no significant difference in demographic parameters between the two groups. Compared to the control group, patients with CAE had significantly wider frontal QRS-T angle (p < 0.001), as well as longer QTmax duration, p = 0.002; Tp-Te interval, p = 0.02; and QT dispersion (QTd), p = 0.04. Conclusion: The frontal QRS-T angle can be calculated easily and time-efficiently using surface electrocardiography. In this study, we showed for the first time that the frontal QRS-T angle was significantly increased in patients with CAEArticle Evaluation of Frontal QRS-T Angle in Patients with Coronary Artery Ectasia(Sociedade Brasileira de Cardiologia – SBC, 2023) Karahan, Mehmet Zülkif; Aktan, Adem; Güzel, Tuncay; Kayan, Fethullah; Günlü, SerhatBackground: Coronary artery ectasia (CAE) is defined by focal enlargement of the coronary artery exceeding 1.5 times the adjacent normal segment. Our study, we aimed to examine the relationship between psychiatric comorbid conditions and glycemic control in children and adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes. Method: In our study, depending on the number of patients, good and moderate controls were evaluated as a single group, and HbA1c levels of 8.5 and below were included in this group. Children for Depression Inventory (CDI), Screen for Child Anxiety-Related Emotional Disorders (SCARED), Turgay Child and Adolescent Behavioral Disorders Based on DSM-IV Screening and Evaluation Scale were applied. The case and parents were evaluated with K-SADS-PL.Among 778 diabetic patients who were followed up in the pediatric endocrinology clinic, 73 cases between the ages of 8 and 17 who were followed up regularly, who did not have any comorbidities and who accepted to participate in the study were evaluated psychiatrically. Results: Of the 73 cases included in the study, 29 were accepted as the patients with good glycemic control (HbA1c <= 8.5 mg / dl), and 44 as with poor glycemic control (HbA1c>8.5mg / dl). In cases with poor glycemic control, parents' education level and income level were significantly lower, while the rate of attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, major depressive disorder, social anxiety disorder and psychopathology was significantly higher. Discussion: The findings of this study revealed that there are many factors affecting glycemic control and there is a strong relationship between glycemic control and psychopathologies.
