The changes in the flavor components were significantly affected by the production methods and storage time. Glucose content decreased gradually along storage and reduced by about 21.23, 47.22 and 56.65% for TRI, INI and RPF, respectively. However, fructose decreased significantly only in RPF (11.29%). Citric and succinic acids exhibited slight changes, but malic acid showed an increasing trend, especially in RPF (4-fold). Most of the VC in all samples decreased or disappeared after storage. The major quantitative losses in these compounds were found in TRI during the first 3 months as 81.76%. The use of alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) as a dietary supplement during pregnancy has increased greatly in recent years and has been known to have positive effects on various pregnancy outcomes including miscarriage, diabetic embryopathy, preterm delivery, and congenital malformations. Aim: To evaluate the effects of tobacco smoke exposure (TSE) on sexual behavior, reproductive parameters, and testicles in adult male rats and to reveal the possible role of ALA administration on these parameters. Methods: Pregnant rats (n = 7 per group) were treated with tobacco smoke (TS), ALA (20 mg/kg), and TS + ALA for a total of 11 weeks. The following parameters were compared with 8 control rats: puberty parameters, sexual behavior; levels of serum gonadotropins and testosterone, total antioxidant status, and total oxidant status; the expression of the apoptotic protease-activating factor-1 and caspase 9 mRNA levels in the testis; and assessment of immunohistochemistry and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling assay of testis. Main Outcome Measure: Sexual behavior, changes in puberty parameters, and hormonal and genetic alterations were the outcomes analyzed in this study. Results: Maternal TSE caused a significant decrease in the number of intromissions compared to the control group. Similarly, ALA decreased erectile function in sexual behavior by decreasing the number of intromissions and intromission ratio in the ALA group compared to the control group. In addition, TSE and ALA treatment caused an impairment of some consummatory sexual behaviors. Also, in parallel with this inhibitory effect, the age of pubertal onset was significantly delayed in the TS + ALA group compared to other groups. Also, histopathological changes in testicular tissue, oxidative stress markers, apoptotic index, and mRNA levels of apoptosis-related genes increased in all treatment groups. Clinical Implications: The use of ALA and/or tobacco products during pregnancy may adversely affect the reproductive health of male newborns in the long term. Strengths & Limitations: To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to show the effects of maternal ALA treatment and/or TSE on the sexual behavior and reproductive parameters in male rats; however, the study is based on an animal model, and the present findings partially reflect the characteristics of human sexual behavior. Conclusion: Maternal TSE and/or ALA treatment may impair sexual behavior in adulthood in male rats because of testicular damage caused by oxidative stress during gonadal development. Increasing evidence suggests that vitamin D may play a role in maintaining cognitive function and vitamin D deficiency may accelerate cognitive decline. The aim of this study was to evaluate the status of vitamin D in chronic renal failure (CRF) patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD) and to correlate the findings with cognitive functions. Materials and methods: The study was performed in Inonu University Turgut Ozal Medical Center. Serum 25hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) was measured and cognitive functions (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale’s (WAIS) Comprehension Subtest) tested with 51 peritoneal dialysis patients and a control group consisting of 51 healthy individuals have similar conditions with patients. Individuals with other chronic diseases and smoking and alcohol habits which may impair cognitive functions were excluded from the study. Results: Compared to each groups we found negative correlation between 25(OH)D3 levels and WAIS’s Comprehension Subtest in patient and control group. The correlation between data was evaluated with the Spearman’s test (P = 0.597, r = 0.76 and P = 0.010 r = 0.356 respectively). Conclusions: In the literature, there is no consensus on the presence of an association between vitamin D levels and cognition. In this study vitamin D levels were measured as deficiency in both groups. Further studies are needed to investigate for increasing actual knowledge about this association.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 3Discrimination Based on Sexual Orientation “Homophobia in Healthcare Employees”: a Cross-Sectional Study(Springer, 2025) Deger, Vasfiye Bayram; Kacan, HavvaIntroductionThe study was conducted to examine the attitudes of healthcare employees toward homosexuals and the factors affecting them, while homophobic thoughts and behaviors are based on heteronormative cultural beliefs and gender stereotypes.MethodsThis study was planned as a cross-sectional and completed with 720 healthcare employees. The Demographic Information Form and Hudson and Ricketts Homophobia Scale were used in the study. Data were collected between January 06 and January 10, 2022.ResultsThe mean homophobia total score of the employees was determined as 97,503 +/- 25,807. Homophobia levels of male healthcare employees, those who thought homosexuality is a disease, and those who stated that homosexuality can be caused by taking an example had increasing homophobia levels. The level of homophobia decreases in the presence of homosexual friends, those who can talk freely about homosexuality, and healthcare employees who support same-sex marriage.ConclusionsRecognition of individuals with different sexual orientations by healthcare employees will reduce homophobic attitudes toward these individuals. Examining the level of homophobia in healthcare institutions and ensuring that discriminatory attitudes or behaviors toward individuals from different sexual orientations are determined to be effective on the quality of healthcare and access to healthcare services.Policy ImplicationsThere is a healthcare system in which patients are generally assumed to be heterosexual; healthcare employees are not prepared to work with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transsexual patients in general. Nurses play a crucial role in care and therefore should keep up with this trend and improve their intercultural sensitivity. Objective and design: This descriptive cross-sectional study investigated the effects of ethnocentrism and moral sensitivity on intercultural sensitivity in nursing students. Methods and participants: Data were collected using a demographic characteristics questionnaire and the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale, Generalized Ethnocentrism Scale, and Moral Sensitivity Scale. The sample consisted of 1343 nursing students. The Pearson correlation coefficient was used to determine correlations between scale scores. Multiple linear regression was used to determine the effects of ethnocentrism, moral sensitivity, and demographic characteristics on intercultural sensitivity. Results: Intercultural sensitivity was found to be negatively correlated with ethnocentrism and positively correlated with moral sensitivity. Ethnocentrism predicted intercultural sensitivity more than moral sensitivity. Ethnocentrism and moral sensitivity explained 16.8% of the total variance of intercultural sensitivity. However, ethnocentrism affected intercultural sensitivity more than moral sensitivity did (beta = −0.406). Conclusion: Nursing education should adopt strategies to reduce ethnocentrism by helping students develop cultural competence and intercultural sensitivity. This property is the key factor in the developing of cost-effective and efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) electrocatalysts for sustainable hydrogen production. In this study, novel electrocatalysts which are decorated with Pt and Ru have been developed for HER electrocatalysis. Microscopic analysis such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) are performed to determine the morphological and compositional structures. Electrocatalysis properties are evaluated by cathodic current-potential curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) in 1.0 M KOH solution. Chronoamperometry (CA) and cycle tests are used for stability/durability of electrocatalysts. Results show that a small onset potential of the porous Cu/Ni/CuZn–Pt is obtained for HER. Exchange current density and polarization resistance are found to be 5.39 mA cm−2 and 2.0 Ω cm2 at overpotential of −100 mV for porous Cu/Ni/CuZn–Pt, respectively, indicating that Cu/Ni/CuZn–Pt is higher electrocatalytic properties than the others. Moreover, very low overpotentials at 10 and 40 mA cm−2 are obtained on porous Cu/Ni/CuZn–Pt compared with porous Cu/Ni/CuZn–Ru and Cu/Ni/CuZn. Porous Cu/Ni/CuZn–Pt also displays excellent stability/durability in test solution. The remarkable electrocatalysis properties of porous Cu/Ni/CuZn–Pt can be explained due to high porous structure, leaching of Zn from the deposit, intrinsic activity of Pt as well as changing in the electronic structure. In this study, to prepare cost-efficient Pt-based electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution, Cu electrode is deposited with nickel (Cu/ Ni) and this surface is modified with Pt nanoparticles by electrodeposition method (Cu/Ni-Pt). The surface properties of the produced electrocatalysts are studied via X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron spectroscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Characterizations demonstrated that the coating is homogeneous and compact. Hydrogen evolution and corrosion behaviors of prepared electrode (Cu/Ni-Pt) are examined in 1.0 M KOH solution using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and cathodic and anodic current-potential curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Tafel slope is determined to be 133 mV dec(-1) on Cu/Ni-Pt. Very high exchange current density (5.65 mA cm(-2)) and very low charge transfer resistance (0.91 Omega cm(2) at 1.05 V vs RHE) are measured again on this electrocatalyst. High activity is due to intrinsic activity of Pt and synergistic interaction of Pt and Ni. Design/methods: This research was carried out in two stages and is type of descriptive, analytical and observational. The study comprised 563 students from a Faculty of Nursing. Besides evaluating the nursing students' sociodemographic data, we assessed their beliefs and hand hygiene practices using a Hand Hygiene Beliefs Scale (HHBS) and Hand Hygiene Practices Inventory (HHPI) and also used with "Derma LiteCheck" device to assess how effectively they washed their hands. The STROBE checklist was used. Results: The handwashing frequency of the female students was significantly higher. The scores on both the HHBS and the HHPI were significantly higher among the female students compared to the males. The dirtiest areas of the hand were determined as nails (nail beds, beneath the nails), skin between the fingers and fingertips. Conclusions: The results of our study indicate that although student nurses have positive perceptions about hand hygiene and appear to have developed good habits, the effectiveness of their handwashing is poor. The characterization was achieved using X-ray diffraction and field emission scanning electron microscopy. Hydrogen evolution performance of electrodes was investigated via cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, cathodic polarization curves, and electrochemical impedance measurements. Electrochemical results showed that hydrogen production efficiency significantly increased and charge transfer resistance decreased via G/Ni/Ag. The electrochemical water splitting performance of G/Ni/Ag, was established in a joint experimental and computational effort. Water and proton adsorption on Ag-decorated Ni surface were investigated using density functional theory. Electronic structure calculations identified the role of Ag adatom and Ni surface on water and proton adsorptions. From the computational studies, O in water was more reliable to adsorb at the bridge position of the Ag and Ni atoms, leading improved orbital overlap between H and Ni atoms and maximized chemical and physical interactions between the H2O molecules. Therefore, the Ag-decorated Ni(111) surface provides preferable adsorption site for the O atom in water and direct interactions between water Hs and available surface Ni atoms promote water dissociation.Article Citation - WoS: 32Citation - Scopus: 36Health literacy, health perception and related factors among different ethnic groups: a cross-sectional study in southeastern Turkey(BMC Health, 2021) Yiğitalp, Gülhan; Bayram Değer, Vasfiye; Çifçi, SemaBackground: Low levels of health literacy are associated with increased hospitalization rates, problems regarding the proper intake of medications, poor general health and increased mortality rates. It is a well-known fact that health literacy differs among ethnic groups and ethnic minorities, in particular, are known to have a low level of health literacy. The present study aimed to reveal the levels of health literacy among different ethnic groups and the affecting factors as well as the relationship between health literacy and health perceptions. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out with different ethnic groups (Kurdish, Arab, Turkish and Assyrian origin), between 18 and 65 years old in the province of Mardin in Turkey. The study was conducted with a total of 600 people. The European Health Literacy Scale-Turkish Adaptation (EHLS-TR) and Health Perception Scale (HPS) were used for measurement. Descriptive analysis, Mann Whitney U Test, Kruskal Wallis Test and Spearman correlation were used in the data analysis. Results: It was found that 80.7% of the participants had relatively low levels of health literacy. The lowest levels of health literacy were among those of Kurdish origin. There were correlations between sufficient levels of health literacy and several factors including being of Assyrian origin, being 50–65 years old, living in a nuclear family, being a secondary school graduate, having a high financial status, being retired, evaluating one’s own health status as good, obtaining health information from healthcare professionals, preferring to visit a state hospital to seek medical assistance first, smoking and drinking alcohol. A positive correlation was also identified between the levels of health literacy and health perception. Conclusions: It is essential to develop programs to increase health literacy for the public and, in particular, for the ethnic groups that are disadvantaged in many aspects in the context of health literacy.Article Citation - WoS: 13Citation - Scopus: 14Hesperetin may alleviate the development of doxorubicin-induced pulmonary toxicity by decreasing oxidative stress and apoptosis in male rats(Elsevier, 2021) Erdem Güzel, Elif; Kaya Tektemur, NalanDoxorubicin (DOX) is one of the most widely used chemotherapeutic agents. However, it causes pulmonary toxicity which decreases its clinical use in human cancer therapy. The present study was undertaken to obtain an insight into the potential protective effect of hesperetin (HES) against doxorubicin-induced pulmonary toxicity in rats. The animals were divided into 4 groups with 7 rats per group. The experimental treatments were as follows: Control, DOX, DOX + HES, and HES groups. DOX was administered at the dosage of 15 mg/kg i.p for a single dose. HES was administered at the dosage of 50 mg/kg by oral gavage every other day. After 28 days, biochemical parameters, oxidative stress status, histopathological changes, apoptosis-related genes and apoptotic index (AI) were examined of lung tissue. Histopathological changes, Poly [ADP-ribose] polymerase 1 (PARP-1), Caspase-3 (Casp3), Cytochrome c (Cytc), apoptosis-related genes, and AI significantly increased in the DOX group relative to the control group. Malondialdehyde (MDA) significantly increased, while superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) decreased in the DOX group relative to the control group. However, histopathological findings, MDA, AI, and PAPR1, Casp3 protein expression, mRNA expression of Cytc significantly decreased, while SOD, GPx increased in the DOX + HES group relative to the DOX group. We here aimed to investigate the effects of flavonoid apigenin, which is considered to have anti-tumoral activity on CRC with high epidemiological prevalence, on cell proliferation and cell survivals, and the positive and negative dose-dependent effects of genetic or mutational alterations in SWH pathway components on HT29 CRC cell lines. Methods: Human colon cancer cell lines HT-29 were commercially available. In each flask, 5 groups were formed, each of which consists of 5,000 cells for different dose groups and the cells were plated. After a 24 and 48 h incubation period, cytotoxicity values were measured by MTT assay and gene expression was assessed by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis method. Results: Application of 12.5 and 25 nM of apigenin significantly increased cell death in HT29 cell lines. LATS1, STK3 and TP53 gene expression decreased in the same dose groups compared to control and other groups. Conclusion: It has been concluded that TP53 gene is strongly correlated with LATS1 and STK3 genes among the SWH pathway factors in the progression of CRC and could be used as an important marker for early detection of malignant transmission. Mercury toxicity poses a serious threat to human health. It is an element that causes oxidative stress to increase in individuals, leading to tissue damage. Oxidative stress is the result of the imbalance between the production of oxidative species and cellular antioxidant defense. Phytotherapy continues to play an important role in health care. Natural phytotherapeutic antioxidants, exhibit a broad sequence of biological impacts, including anti-oxidative stress, anti-aging, anti-toxicicity and anticancer. Many studies have also shown that the phytotherapeutic agents play an important role in the removal of mercury from the tissue and in reducing oxidative stress. In this study, we designed a novel series of 1,3,4-thiadiazoles through the reaction of 2-(4-methyl-2-(2-(1-phenylethylidene)hydrazineyl)thiazole-5-carbonyl)-N-phenylhydrazine-1-carbothioamide (3) with the proper hydrazonoyl halides. Using the MTT assay, the newly synthesized thiadiazoles' growth-inhibitory potential against the liver cancer cell line HepG2-1 was assessed. In comparison to the standard drug doxorubicin (IC50 = 0.72 ± 0.52 µM), the results showed that two compounds, 16b and 21 (IC50 = 0.69 ± 0.41 and 1.82 ± 0.94 µM, respectively) had promising anticancer activity. The structural activity relationship (SAR) was investigated. In addition, molecular docking analysis onto quinone oxidoreductase2 (NQO2) receptor (PDB: 4ZVM) was investigated against the potent compounds to examine the reliability of the in vitro results. The newly prepared thiadiazole-thiazole hybrids are therefore regarded as potent anticancer drugs.
