Article Changes in volatile compounds, sugars and organic acids of different spices of peppers (Capsicum annuum L.) during storage(FOOD CHEMISTRY, 2020) Korkmaz, Aziz; Atasoy, Ahmet Ferit; Hayaloglu, Ali AdnanChanges in sugars, organic acids and volatile compounds (VC) of red pepper flakes (RPF), traditional (TRI), and industrial (INI) isot peppers were evaluated during one year storage at the room condition. The changes in the flavor components were significantly affected by the production methods and storage time. Glucose content decreased gradually along storage and reduced by about 21.23, 47.22 and 56.65% for TRI, INI and RPF, respectively. However, fructose decreased significantly only in RPF (11.29%). Citric and succinic acids exhibited slight changes, but malic acid showed an increasing trend, especially in RPF (4-fold). Most of the VC in all samples decreased or disappeared after storage. The major quantitative losses in these compounds were found in TRI during the first 3 months as 81.76%. The storage was found to be caused deterioration flavor properties in red pepper spices and revealed the importance of appropriate storage conditions.Conference Object Correlation between vitamin D status and Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale's comprehension subtest in patient with end-stage renal diseases(WILEY-BLACKWELL, 2016) Karaoğlan, Mehmet; Emre, Memet Hanifi; Demirtaş, Yasemin; Şahin, İdris; Taşkapan, HülyaAim: Cognitive decline is an important problem for individuals, as well as for the community. Increasing evidence suggests that vitamin D may play a role in maintaining cognitive function and vitamin D deficiency may accelerate cognitive decline. The aim of this study was to evaluate the status of vitamin D in chronic renal failure (CRF) patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD) and to correlate the findings with cognitive functions. Materials and methods: The study was performed in Inonu University Turgut Ozal Medical Center. Serum 25hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) was measured and cognitive functions (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale’s (WAIS) Comprehension Subtest) tested with 51 peritoneal dialysis patients and a control group consisting of 51 healthy individuals have similar conditions with patients. Individuals with other chronic diseases and smoking and alcohol habits which may impair cognitive functions were excluded from the study. Results: Compared to each groups we found negative correlation between 25(OH)D3 levels and WAIS’s Comprehension Subtest in patient and control group. The correlation between data was evaluated with the Spearman’s test (P = 0.597, r = 0.76 and P = 0.010 r = 0.356 respectively). Conclusions: In the literature, there is no consensus on the presence of an association between vitamin D levels and cognition. In this study vitamin D levels were measured as deficiency in both groups. Further studies are needed to investigate for increasing actual knowledge about this association.Article The effect of ethnocentrism and moral sensitivity on intercultural sensitivity in nursing students, descriptive cross-sectional research study(Nurse Education Today, 2021) Yaşar, Beril Nisa; Kaya, Yunus; Arslan, Sevda; Erbaş, Atiye; Küçükkelepçe, Gürhan ErkuşBackground: Factors affecting intercultural sensitivity and care are becoming an increasingly important issue due to ethnic diversity. Nurses play a crucial role in care and therefore should keep up with this trend and improve their intercultural sensitivity. Objective and design: This descriptive cross-sectional study investigated the effects of ethnocentrism and moral sensitivity on intercultural sensitivity in nursing students. Methods and participants: Data were collected using a demographic characteristics questionnaire and the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale, Generalized Ethnocentrism Scale, and Moral Sensitivity Scale. The sample consisted of 1343 nursing students. The Pearson correlation coefficient was used to determine correlations between scale scores. Multiple linear regression was used to determine the effects of ethnocentrism, moral sensitivity, and demographic characteristics on intercultural sensitivity. Results: Intercultural sensitivity was found to be negatively correlated with ethnocentrism and positively correlated with moral sensitivity. Ethnocentrism predicted intercultural sensitivity more than moral sensitivity. Ethnocentrism and moral sensitivity explained 16.8% of the total variance of intercultural sensitivity. However, ethnocentrism affected intercultural sensitivity more than moral sensitivity did (beta = −0.406). Conclusion: Nursing education should adopt strategies to reduce ethnocentrism by helping students develop cultural competence and intercultural sensitivity. Such education can equip nurses to provide higher quality care to patients of different cultural backgrounds.Conference Object Effects of Maternal Tobacco Smoke or Alpha Lipoic Acid on Puberty Onset, Estrous Cycle and Gonadotropin Levels in Female Rats(KARGER, 2018) Erdem Güzel, Elif; Yardimcı, Ahmet; Kaya, Nihat; Tektemur, Ahmet; Akkoç, Ramazan Fazıl; Erdem Güzel, Elif; Canpolat, Sinan; Ozan, EnverVarious environmental factors are known to affect puberty onset. However, there are few studies in literature about how maternal tobacco smoke (ts) or alpha lipoic acid (ala) affect the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal axis at peripheral or central levels in rats. This study aimed to investigate effects of maternal tobacco smoke or alpha lipoic acid on puberty onset, estrous cycle and serum gonadotropin levels in female rats. Adult female spraque-dawley rats were used. All animals were randomly divided into 4 groups (control, ts, ts+ala and ala) and each group consisted of 7 rats. All ts rats were exposed to ts (20 gram\day, for one hour twice a day) and all ala rats received daily oral ala (20 mg/kg) during 8 week. Afterwards all rats were impregnated, ts or ala treatments continued during pregnancy. All treatments ended with birth and later newborn female rats were selected for each group (n=7). Puberty onset was monitored by examination of vaginal opening in female rat pups. Subsequently, estrous cycle was conducted daily for 15 days and determined by examination of the vaginal smear cytology. Also, serum fsh and lh levels were measured using elisa method at the end of the experiment. There was significantly advanced on puberty onset day for ts group (p<0.05). There was a significantly increase in pubertal weight in ala group compared to control group (p<0.001). The mean total number of estrous cycles and average duration of metestrus, diestrus, proestrus or estrus phases were not significantly different in all treatments groups compared to control group. There was no any significant change in serum fsh levels, but serum lh levels were significantly increased in all treatment groups compared to control group (p<0.05). In this study, to prepare cost-efficient Pt-based electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution, Cu electrode is deposited with nickel (Cu/ Ni) and this surface is modified with Pt nanoparticles by electrodeposition method (Cu/Ni-Pt). The surface properties of the produced electrocatalysts are studied via X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron spectroscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Characterizations demonstrated that the coating is homogeneous and compact. Hydrogen evolution and corrosion behaviors of prepared electrode (Cu/Ni-Pt) are examined in 1.0 M KOH solution using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and cathodic and anodic current-potential curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Tafel slope is determined to be 133 mV dec(-1) on Cu/Ni-Pt. Very high exchange current density (5.65 mA cm(-2)) and very low charge transfer resistance (0.91 Omega cm(2) at 1.05 V vs RHE) are measured again on this electrocatalyst. High activity is due to intrinsic activity of Pt and synergistic interaction of Pt and Ni. Besides, Cu/Ni-Pt exhibits so stable structure over 4 h without any current densities decay as well as showing good corrosion performance after long-term immersion times and these properties make it possible electrocatalyst with high corrosion resistant and activity in the water electrolysis systems.Article Examining the hand hygiene beliefs and practices of nursing students and the effectiveness of their handwashing behaviour(Journal of Clinical Nursing, 2020) Baran, Leyla; Ceylan, Burcu; Güneş, Ülkü Yapucu; Öztürk, Huri; Sahbudak, GülAims and objectives: To examine the hand hygiene beliefs and practices of Turkish nursing students and the effectiveness of their handwashing. Background: Handwashing is the most important part of preventing cross-infection, but there is a considerable amount of evidence that shows that the handwashing technique of nurses and nursing students is not always very effective. Design/Methods: This research was carried out in two stages and is type of descriptive, analytical and observational. The study comprised 563 students from a Faculty of Nursing. Besides evaluating the nursing students' sociodemographic data, we assessed their beliefs and hand hygiene practices using a Hand Hygiene Beliefs Scale (HHBS) and Hand Hygiene Practices Inventory (HHPI) and also used with “Derma LiteCheck” device to assess how effectively they washed their hands. The STROBE checklist was used. Results: The handwashing frequency of the female students was significantly higher. The scores on both the HHBS and the HHPI were significantly higher among the female students compared to the males. The dirtiest areas of the hand were determined as nails (nail beds, beneath the nails), skin between the fingers and fingertips. Conclusions: The results of our study indicate that although student nurses have positive perceptions about hand hygiene and appear to have developed good habits, the effectiveness of their handwashing is poor. The characterization was achieved using X-ray diffraction and field emission scanning electron microscopy. Hydrogen evolution performance of electrodes was investigated via cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, cathodic polarization curves, and electrochemical impedance measurements. Electrochemical results showed that hydrogen production efficiency significantly increased and charge transfer resistance decreased via G/Ni/Ag. The electrochemical water splitting performance of G/Ni/Ag, was established in a joint experimental and computational effort. Water and proton adsorption on Ag-decorated Ni surface were investigated using density functional theory. Electronic structure calculations identified the role of Ag adatom and Ni surface on water and proton adsorptions. From the computational studies, O in water was more reliable to adsorb at the bridge position of the Ag and Ni atoms, leading improved orbital overlap between H and Ni atoms and maximized chemical and physical interactions between the H2O molecules. Therefore, the Ag-decorated Ni(111) surface provides preferable adsorption site for the O atom in water and direct interactions between water Hs and available surface Ni atoms promote water dissociation.Conference Object Randomized controlled study:investigation of the effcet of exercise on liver function tests, fatigue and quality of life in patients with liver cirrhosis(JOURNAL OF HEPATOLOGY, 2021) Keskin, Hülya; Türeyen, Aynur; Akarca, UlusBackground and aims: This randomized controlled study aimed to determine the effect of the exercise program to be applied in patients with cirrhosis on the patient’s biochemistry parameters, quality of life, fatigue level, depression, and quality of sleep. Method: The study population consisted of 84 patients, including the physical exercise group (PE, n = 27), the breathing exercise group (BE, n = 29), and the no intervention group (NI, n = 28).An exercise program (5 minutes warm-up, 30 minutes walking, 5 minutes cooldown) and a 10-minute breathing exercise were requested 7days a week for 3 months in PE and BE patients, respectively. The patients were trained on how to perform the exercises and all the patients were followed up by phone calls on the exercise days and on the same days for the NI group to motivate the patients. Personal Information Form, 6-Minute Walking Test, Body Mass Index (BMI) Assessment Form, SF-36 Quality of Life Scale, Biochemistry Parameters Assessment Form, Child-Pugh Score Assessment Form, Beck’s Depression Inventory, Fatigue Severity Scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were completed by face-to-face interviews at the beginning and the end of the study period. Differences between the data at the onset and at the end within the groups were tested by the Wilcoxon test. Comparisons of the differences of the groups were performed with GLM repeated measures.
