Article Cranial size and shape sexual dimorphism in the Kangal dog from Turkey(Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK), 2020) Sıddıq, Abu Bakar; Sıddıq, Abu Bakar; Onar, VedatThis study has so far been the first attempt to characterize and quantify skull sexual variation in Kangal dog, by means of geometric morphometric techniques. A sample of 16 adult Kangal crania has been analyzed with this purpose. To obtain a full image of morphological pattern, digital pictures were taken from the ventral, left lateral, and dorsal sides of each skull, and a total of 16, 15, and 16 landmarks respectively were obtained on each image. Skull size and shape differed significantly in all aspects among different sexes, male skulls being bigger. Shape differences were observed mainly on zygomatic arch and muzzle on the dorsal view, pterygoid bone and articular surface to mandibular condyle in the lateral aspect, and cranial width and maxillary bone on the ventral view. Although the sample was comparatively small in number, being the first geometric morphometric approach applied on the Kangal dog, the obtained results will add vital information particularly to understand the cranial shape sexual dimorphism of this unique dog breed in Turkey.Article Does disability matter in counselling? Views of counsellors with visual disabilities and their clients(British Journal of Guidance and Counselling, 2020) Sakız, Halis; Sarıcalı, Mehmet; Türküm, Ayşe SibelIn this study we investigated the case of disability from the perspective of counsellors with visual disability (CWVD) and their clients by focusing on the counselling skills of CWVD, the relationships with their clients, and the perspectives of their clients in relation to their counselling experiences. Fifteen CWVDs and 11 clients (N = 26) were interviewed and data were analysed thematically. Findings show that CWVDs used their set of skills to build trustworthy therapeutic relationships through genuineness, established here and now relations in therapeutic encounter effectively, and produced meaningful outcomes. Findings of this research indicate the need to reconsider the field of counselling around pluralist, inclusive and multicultural paradigms.Article From ‘brothers in religion’ to ‘bandits’: Chechens in Mardin in the late Ottoman period(Taylor & Francis Online, 2021) Yelbaşı, Caner; Akman, EkremThis article analyses the mass migration of Chechens to the Ottoman Empire between the mid-1860s and the 1900s. The Russian expansion to the North Caucasus transformed the entire region surrounding the Black Sea, including its demography, governance and politics. This expansion took place in several phases. The first resulted in a major mass migration by several North Caucasian groups, who abandoned the region in response to the increasing presence of Russian military personnel. During the second stage, the exodus of these groups accelerated because of massacres committed by the Russian military in an attempt to take complete control. Many North Caucasians were exiled to Ottoman lands, arriving en masse, either on foot, or by sailing across the Black Sea. This article argues that the Ottoman state lacked a well-functioning settlement policy regarding the incoming North Caucasians. The Ottomans aimed to accommodate the refugees by deploying the frame of viewing them as ‘brothers in religion‘, but this resulted in a number of issues, in particular due to existing problems concerning the ‘state's Tanzimat‘ order, along with the collection of taxes and conflict with Bedouin tribes in the Mardin region. This article examines this phenomenon by means of a study of the ‘Chechens' journey‘ to the Ottoman Empire, focusing specifically on a subgroup of Chechens, who were settled in the Mardin region. Through the use of a considerable array of archival resources, the article seeks to firstly, trace the route taken by the Chechen group to Mardin and secondly, to clarify their transformation from being considered ‘brothers in religion’ by the Ottomans to regional bandits.Article High level of fluctuating asymmetry in the Byzantine dogs from the Theodosius Harbor, Istanbul, Turkey(Turkish Journal of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, 2021) Sıddıq, Abu Bakar; Parés-Casanova, Pere M.; Öncü, Ö. Emre; Kar, Hakan; Onar, VedatAsymmetry, the abnormality of an organism or a part of it from its perfect symmetry, is represented by three different categories: fluctuating asymmetry, directional asymmetry, and antisymmetry. Fluctuating asymmetry attributes to random developmental variation of a morphological character, whereas directional asymmetry attributes one of the body sides to be more prominent than the other. Antisymmetry appears whenever one body side of a biological body shows greater morphological appearance than the other. Since more environmental stress often produces greater effect of fluctuating asymmetry, it can be a good indicator of physiological stress in the morphological characteristic of a biological being. Applying, so far, the first geometric morphometric methods on any Byzantine fauna, this study aimed to determine the kind and direction of skull asymmetry occurred in Byzantine dog skulls. Aiming this, asymmetries in 16 adult Byzantine dog skulls unearthed form Yenikapı-Marmaray excavation (ancient Theodosius Harbor) in İstanbul, were compared with 39 adult skulls of modern pet dog breeds. Seventeen landmarks (3 midline and 14 bilateral) were selected on the digital pictures of the ventral aspect of each skull, and used for detailed analysis. The results showed a greater percentage of fluctuating asymmetry in the Byzantine dog skulls, suggesting them not to be the remains of pets or housed dogs but perhaps the labor or stray dogs in the Byzantine capital Constantinople.Article İlköğretim okullarında müfettişlerce yapılan rehberlik ve denetim çalışmalarının işlevselliği(EDAM, 2011) Ekinci, Abdurrahman; Karakuş, MehmetIn this study, it was aimed to determine to what extent the problems detected at the guidance and supervision reports could be solved and in this context, to what degree these visits were functional. So, with a qualitative research approach, data were obtained at two stages and analyzed through NVivo 7 software. At the first stage, the guidance and supervision reports of 2007-2008 academic year were obtained from Education Supervisors Board and were analyzed comparatively for forty primary schools which were randomly selected from the schools in the city center of Yozgat. At the second stage, ten education supervisors were interviewed. The results of the research showed that there were some problems unsolved at each of the six categories (physical situation, instructional situation, clerical works, student affairs, personnel affairs and affairs of budget and movable goods). Especially the physical problems that necessitate pecuniary resource and instructional problems that require some competencies related to the new curriculum were revealed to remain unsolved in most of the schools. It was recommended for schools to be allocated a sufficient budget and for school administrators and teachers to be equipped with necessary competencies to solve problems.Article Morphometric analysis of the skulls of domestic cattle (Bos taurus L.) and water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis L.) in Turkey(2019) Sıddıq, Abu Bakar; Sıddıq, Abu Bakar; Kahvecioğlu, Kifayet Oya; Öztürk, Muhsin; Onar, VedatA total of 20 domestic cattle (Bos taurus L.) and 15 water buffalo (Bubalis bubalis L.) skulls were analyzed in this study. All of the specimens belonged to female individuals. Using a total of 27 craniometric measurements from each of the skulls, 9 indices were calculated. Although there were statistically significant differences between the linear measurements of the skulls of both species, while calculating the indices with their ratios, the values of the measurements of the facial area were determinative in the craniology. Among these indices, the facial index 1 value was statistically significant (P < 0.01) in the comparison of these two species. On the other hand, while considering the orbit and foramen magnum measurements, in contrast with the transversal measurement, the height was more determinant for their index and form.Article PROCAVIIDAE (HYRACOIDEA: MAMMALIA) FROM THE MIDDLE PLEISTOCENE INFILLINGS OF KARAIN CAVE, ANTALYA, TURKEY: BIOGEOGRAPHIC AND PALAEOCLIMATIC IMPLICATIONS(2021) Erbil, EşrefAbundant procaviid fossils from archaeological contexts at Karain Cave, Antalya, Turkey, comprise the first record of this extant family of Hyracoidea outside Afro-Arabia. The relatively large body dimensions of the remains, which are attributed to Procavia capensis (the rock hyrax) indicate that the climate was relatively cool and humid, more so than the region where the nearest extant neighbours survive, the subspecies Procavia capensis syriaca, which is a smaller animal living in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Israel.Article Self-esteem and perceived social competence protect adolescent students against ostracism and loneliness(Journal of Psychologists and Counsellors in Schools, 2021) Sakız, Halis; Mert, Abdullah; Sarıçam, HakanThe purpose of this research was to examine the associations between self-esteem, perceived social competence, ostracism and loneliness among adolescent students. For the investigation of self-esteem and perceived social competence as key developmental constructs concerning negative experiences such as ostracism and loneliness, it is important to understand the experiences that may inhibit individual development in adolescence. Participants were 542 presecondary and secondary school students who completed the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the Perceived Social Competence Scale, the Ostracism Experience Scale for Adolescents, and the Loneliness Scale for Children. The data were analysed with Pearson moments correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. Findings showed that: (1) self-esteem, perceived social competence, ostracism and loneliness were related to each other; (2) self-esteem and perceived social competence were negatively related to ostracism and loneliness; (3) ostracism had a positive relationship with loneliness and a negative impact on self-esteem; and (4) an increase in the level of perceived social competence predicted a decrease in the levels of ostracism and loneliness. The results were discussed in the light of relevant literature.Article A Study on Contribution of the Basic Training Course to the Professional Development of Probationary Teachers(EDAM, 2012) Yıldırım, Muhamet CevatBu çalışmanın amacı, temel eğitim kursunun aday öğretmenlerin mesleki gelişimlerine katkısı hakkında bir değerlendirme yapmaktır. Çalışma grubu, Şanlıurfa ilindeki 21 aday öğretmen ve 5 eğitim müfettişinden oluşmaktadır. Veriler, yarı yapılandırılmış gözlem, odak grup görüşmesi ve yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme yöntemleriyle toplanmıştır. Verilerin analizinde, betimsel analiz ve içerik analizi teknikleri kullanılmıştır. Çalışmanın sonuçları, temel eğitim kursunun örgütsel sosyalleşme, bilgilenme ve psikolojik etki açısından aday öğretmenlerin mesleki gelişimlerine olumlu etkisinin olduğunu göstermiştir. Bununla birlikte, temel eğitim kursunda içerik, planlama ve örgütleme, öğretim ortamı, öğrenme ve öğretme süreci açısından bazı sorunların yaşandığı belirlenmiştir. Dolayısıyla, aday öğretmenlerin ihtiyaçları ve günümüz koşuları dikkate alınarak temel eğitim kursu ile ilgili gerekli düzenlemelerin yapılmasının bir zorunluluk haline geldiği söylenebilir.Article Understanding new consumer trends in Turkey through coffee production and consumption in Mardin(Anthropological Notebooks, 2022) Uygur, Hatice Kübra; Uygur, Hatice KübraCoffee which helps us to learn about the cultural practices of a society, is an important consumption commodity not only in Turkey but also in the world. In this study, various specialty coffees produced by coffee producers in Artuklu, the historical district of Mardin, the rapid change of cafes and the purchasing practices of consumers have been examined. Ethnographic interviews have also been conducted with coffee producers, cafe owners and consumers. Coffee producers produce various coffees such as Turkish, Assyrian, Kurdish, Dibek and cardamom reflecting the multicultural structure of the city. Cafe owners and producers use expressions and images that emulate antiquity in their brands and logos. The cafes as “third place” become flamboyant spacious spaces leaving their traditional appearance. The consumption of new products by visitors of Mardin, an important place for domestic tourists, indicates a new class that seeks pleasure and experience in Turkey.Article WRITING THE ORIENT: THE REPRESENTATION OF THE OTTOMAN SOCIETY IN THE TRAVEL OF EDUARD SACHAU (1845-1930)(ACTA HISTRIAE, 2022) Avcı, RemziIn the nineteenth century, the writings of European travellers became a textual vehicle by which the West sought to understand the Orient. Based on first-hand but highly subjective data, they contain comparisons between the Orient and the Occident which distinguish the two regions from one another. Thus, they played an important role in shaping the Western perception of the Orient. This article focuses on the German Orientalistphilologist Eduard Sachau (1845-1930), who held a chair at the Friedrich-Wilhelm University in Berlin and also served as the director of the Seminar fur Orientalische Sprachen (Institute of Oriental Languages). Sachau's journey to the East began in 1879 and lasted about six months. His travel notes were published (in 1883), under the title Reise in Syrien und Mesopotamien (Travel in Syria and Mesopotamia). In the nineteenth century, not only the British and French but also the German travellers had an important role in shaping the Western perception of the Orient. Following Edward Said's groundbreaking work Orientalism (1979) this study will argue that Sachau's narratives produce certain stereotypes. It will be made the case through analyses of the forms of expression, perceptions and cultural patterns that Sachau chose in order to construct an orientalist discourse, when he described different ethnicities, religions and sects.
