ERIQUA AND MINUAHINILI: AN EARLY IRON AGE-NAIRI KINGDOM AND URARTIAN PROVINCE ON THE NORTHERN SLOPE OF MT AĞRI (SETTLEMENT COMPLEXES AT MELEKLI AND KARAKOYUNLU)

Highland of eastern Anatolia, southern Transcaucasia and northwestern Iran were divided among a great number of local polities in the Late Bronze-Early Iron Age (c. 1600-900 BC). By the change of political power, regional landscape previously consisted of small local polities largely transformed into a province of the kingdom of Urartu (Middle Iron Age, c. 900-600 BC). The Urartian conquest of the Araxes valley-Mt Ağrı region began the earlier stage of the kingdom. Some of the sites that we investigated in the region show a developed and complex system. These settlement complexes were located in central area of geographical units. Each of the them covers interrelated units in a vast area within a long time period. The most remarkable settlement complexes of Mt Ağrı are Melekli, Karakoyunlu and Bozkurt can be consider as urban and administrative centres of Early Iron Age (pre-Urartian) and Urartian. South of the Araxes river was land of Erikua-Ireku-Irkuahi, inscriptions of king Minua refer to conquest of Luhiuni which was the capital of Eriqua. Luhiuni, the royal city of Early Iron Age kingdom Erikua; and Minuahinili, new fortress of Urartu and Haldi Temple which was built afterwards by king Minua, must be in the settlement complexes at Melekli and Karakoyunlu (Iğdır) on the northern slope of Mt Ağrı (Iğdır plain-south of the Araxes valley). Bozkurt settlement complex located in the southern part of mountain (Doğubayazıt plain) must also be considered in this frame.

MELEKLİ-KÜLTEPE (IĞDIR) HÖYÜĞÜ, URARTU KALESİ VE COLUMBARİUM: AĞRI DAĞI'NIN KUZEY ETEĞİNDEKİ MİNUAHİNİLİ (KARAKOYUNLU) KENTİ

Melekli-Iğdır Urartu yerleşimi Ağrı Dağı yüzey araştırmamız sırasında belirlenmiş yeni merkezler ile Melekli-Kültepe Columbarium'unda P. F. Petrov (1913) ve K. Balkan (1966) tarafından yapılmış olan kazıların birlikte ele alınmasıyla değerlendirilmiştir. Ağrı Dağı yüzey araştırmasının en dikkat çekici merkezleri kompleks yerleşimler olarak tanımladıklarımızdır, bunlar kuzey etekteki Melekli ve Karakoyunlu ile güney etekteki Bozkurt'dur. Bu türde yerleşimler oldukça geniş alanlara yayılmış ve Geç Kalkolitik Dönem ile Orta Demir Çağ (Urartu) ya da Geç Demir Çağ (Akhaimenid) arasında uzun süreli iskan edilmişlerdir. Coğrafi birimlerin önemli noktalarında yer alan bu kompleks yerleşimlerin her birinde yatay tabakalaşma sisteminde çeşitli dönemleri içeren ve birbirleriyle ilişkili höyükler, kaleler ve mezarlıklar yer alır. Ağrı Dağı kompleks yerleşimleri içinde kuzey etekte ve Iğdır Ovası-Aras Vadisi'nde yer alan Melekli ve Karakoyunlu en önemli bulgulara sahip alanlardır.Melekli ve Karakoyunlu aynı zamanda Erken Demir Çağ ve Orta Demir Çağ (Urartu) için de önemli merkezlerdir. Urartu Kralı Minua (MÖ 810-785/780) tarafından Erken Demir Çağ yerel krallığı Eriqua'nın fethedilmesi ve yeni bir eyelet oluşturulmasıyla bölge Urartu sınırları içine alınmıştır. Iğdır Ovası-Aras Vadisi bereketli topraklarının yanısıra Güney Kafkasya-Kuzeybatı İran için geçit noktası olması açısından da önemliydi. Kral Minua yeni eyelet merkezi Minuahinili'yi Karakoyunlu'da (Kale II) ve bir diğer kaleyi de (Bulakbaşı 2) yakınında inşa etmiştir. Araştırmada belirlediğimiz birçok yeni Urartu kalesi Minuahinili Kenti'nin, gerek Minua gerekse daha sonraki krallar tarafından bölgede ve Güney Kafkasya-Kuzeybatı İran'da yapılan düzenlemeler sırasında yeni yapılanmalarla geliştirildiğini gösterir: Melekli-Lanetlitepe ve Bozkurt Kale II Ağrı Dağı batı geçidinin her iki tarafındaki ileri karakol-yol istasyonlarıydı, Ömerağa-Gölyüzü Kalesi güney etekteki merkezi kaleydi; Aktaş Kalesi ise kuzey etekte bir garnizon-kentti.Melekli Urartu yerleşimi olasılıkla Kral Minua döneminde kurulmuş ve iskanı aralıksız devam etmiş görünen bir İleri Karakol-Yol İstasyonu (Lanetlitepe Kalesi), Kültepe Höyüğü'ndeki Yerleşim ve Columbarium ile bir Kuleyi ? (Deliktaş Höyüğü) kapsar. Ovanın batı ucunda ve Ağrı Dağı-Güney Kafkasya- Kuzeybatı İran geçidinin üzerindeki konumuyla Melekli, Minuahinili Kenti'nin Doğu Anadolu ile arasındaki en önemli noktaydı

THE EARLY IRON AGE CEMETERIES OF THE LAKE VAN BASIN: AN OVERVIEW OF BURIAL TRADITION OF PRE-URARTIANS

The aim of this article is to evaluation of the burial tradition of pre-Urartians in the basin of Lake Van. After the Middle Bronze Age, which had a strong pastoral character, and towards the end of the Late Bronze Age, new pottery, architectural and metallurgical traditions, new settlement pattern and new burial customs emerged in the highland of eastern Anatolia in the Early Iron Age. One of the most remarkable changes is the settlement system, great numbers of fortresses and their cemeteries in the highlands and foothills have been recorded in eastern Anatolia which is also the case southern Caucasia and northwestern Iran. A ruling elite together with a hierarchical social structure and the steps towards the sedentary life started to form around the socio-economic centers, a lifeway between pastoralism and sedentary had taken place in the whole region. Lake Van Basin is the most investigated area, excavations at cemeteries of Ernis (Ünseli) Karagündüz, Yoncatepe, Dilkaya, and a great number of cemeteries which is mainly connected with the highland fortresses found in the survey represent the Early Iron Age burial tradition in the basin. The graves and stelae from Hakkari are quite remarkable finds of the pre-Urartian elite, or the rulers of Uruatri and Nairi lands. This paper also emphasizes the role of Early Iron Age investigations in the basin which is important for the foundation period of the Urartian Kingdom as well as understanding the local polities of pre-Urartians.
