Abstract

This paper aims to make a contribution to, the discussions of the educational perspectives of Islamic societies, which have been going on for nearly two centuries, in the context of the applicability of the Islamic University Proposal, which was raised by Naquib al-Attas in the last quarter of the 20th century, and the feasibility of the theoretical draft that contain of that proposal. The first problematic of the draft proposed by al-Attas is about the nature and content of the secular education system and curriculums which are at the forefront of the issues that prompt to seeking of Islamic societies. Within al-Attas’ system of thought, the norms produced within that system and the education concept imposed by the global ecosystem are under the conceptual siege of the contemporary science paradigm, which carries a dualist mind-building action. Individuals exposed to these training processes cannot get rid of being a disabled with a dualist mental state because they get trapped between the teaching (training/ta’lim) processes that receive from official institutions, where promising expertise and diploma, with education (te’dib) that been adab-centric and based on oral tradition(run in the family). Eventually; Scientists, capital owners, political leaders, intellectuals, teachers and the others layers of society that grow up in Islamic societies, on the one hand, live mentally fluctuationswhile on the other hand they constantly reproduce the existing chaos climate with regard to the knowledge and practices that they produce. In the Islamic University Proposal proposed by al-Attas with reference to these problems and so on, is emphasized the harmony of the balance between the material and spiritual dimensions of man. According to him, the individual can not be in conflict with physical laws, on the contrary, should be taken to center the formation of ‘a good person’ that can be the right to live by taking into consideration these laws. Thus, it is aimed to raise good human(insan-i kâmil) who can all together comprehend the existing cosmic justice in the universe with tradition and contemporary science, faith and the rational mind, the ethical values and dicovery force. In this context, the Islamic University Proposal is an institution/model proposal that will operate towards a balanced formation of the personality of the human being by way of educate (ta’dib) of his/her soul, mind, rational self, emotions and senses. He proposes a curriculum in the ways that will contain ‘keşf-î kadîmden vaz-î cedide’ related to the sciences while creating a theoretical context with respect to this, which presented the above-mentioned framework for human imagination. Al-Attas’ proposal, which emphasizes the fact that on the one-way and reductionist human imagination and the contemporary education design, which is on the level of expert training, can be identified and compensated by the Islamicization.
