Abstract
This cross-sectional and correlational study was conducted to determine the relationship between nursing and midwifery students' competence in ensuring patient safety and their attitudes towards medical errors. The population of the study consisted of the third and fourth year students studying at the nursing and midwifery departments of Mardin Artuklu University between September 2024 and June 2025. The study was conducted with 204 students who volunteered to participate in the study. The study data were collected using the 'Student Information Form', 'Patient Safety Competency Self-Assessment Tool' and 'Scale of Attitudes towards Medical Errors'. Whether the data were normally distributed was checked with kurtosis and skewness coefficients. The relationship between the scales was analyzed with Pearson Correlation analysis. The structural equation modeling was used to model the relationships between the data. The results of the study demonstrated that the mean score obtained from the overall Patient Safety Competency Self-Assessment Tool by the participating nursing and midwifery students was (156.49 ± 18.77), indicating that it was at a moderate level. On the other hand, the mean score they obtained from the Scale of Attitudes towards Medical Errors was 2.24 ± 0.57, which was considered as low and negative. In the study, it was concluded that there was a statistically significant negative correlation between the mean score obtained from the 'Patient Safety Competency Self-Assessment Tool' and the mean score obtained from the 'Scale of Attitudes towards Medical Errors' by the participating students. It was determined that the participating students' medical error attitude predicted 11.1% of their competence in ensuring patient safety. At the end of the study, it was concluded that the participating students' attitudes towards medical error affected their competence in ensuring patient safety. We recommend that studies to be conducted in the future should include a larger sample, and that mixed methods should be used in order to explain causality in the study.
