dc.description.abstract This article evaluates Ahmad Shawqi’s dispute poems in terms of shape and con-tent. The first part of the study deals briefly with the emergence and characteristics of dispute poems as a type of poem in Arabic literature, and then, in a comparative way, it analyzes modern period poet Ahmad Shawqi’s dispute poems in terms of shape and content about al-Burda by al-Busairi who lived in the 13th century and about Yâ Laylu’s-Sabbu by al-Husari al-Qayrawani who was a poet of 11th century. Dispute poems of Ahmad Shawqi about the odes by these two poets also reveal his innovations in this field, the different literary style he brought into the poetry and some intellectual changes; and some aspects of these dispute poems reveal that they have superior aspects than those odes written before him. en_US
