SOSYAL HİZMET BÖLÜMÜ ÖĞRENCİLERİNİN EMPATİK EĞİLİMLERİ İLE ÖZGECİLİK DÜZEYLERİ ARASINDAKİ İLİŞKİNİN İNCELENMESİ

Abstract

Bu araştırmanın amacı, sosyal hizmet bölümü öğrencilerinin empatik eğilim ve özgecilik düzeyleri arasındaki ilişkiyi belirlemek ve empatik eğilim ile özgecilik düzeylerinin cinsiyet, sınıf düzeyi, bölüme isteyerek gelip gelmeme ve sosyal çevre değişkenleri açısından anlamlı bir farklılık gösterip göstermediğini incelemektir. Empatik eğilim ve özgecilik sosyal hizmet disiplini ile doğrudan ilişkili temel değer ve beceriler olarak kabul edilmektedir. Ancak literatür incelendiğinde sosyal hizmet disiplini adına daha çok empati alanında çalışmaların olduğu, doğrudan özgecilik alanı ile empati ve özgecilik arasındaki ilişkiyi konu edinen çalışmaların azlığı dikkat çekmektedir. Literatürdeki bu boşluk ve bu becerilerin eğitim sürecinde geliştirilebileceği düşünüldüğünde sosyal hizmet öğrencilerinin empatik eğilimleri ile özgeci davranış düzeyleri arasındaki ilişki önem kazanmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın sonuçları, sosyal hizmet eğitimi için bir veri kaynağı sağlayabilir. Bu çalışma, tarama modelinin kullanıldığı nicel bir araştırmadır. Araştırmanın örneklemini Bingöl Üniversitesi sosyal hizmet bölümünde okuyan 459 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Bu çalışmada veri toplama aracı olarak; araştırmacılar tarafından hazırlanan sosyo-demografik veri formu, Dökmen (1988) tarafından geliştirilen Empatik Eğilim Ölçeği (EEÖ) ve Ümmet, Ekşi ve Otrar (2013) tarafından geliştirilen Özgecilik Ölçeği (ÖÖ) kullanılmıştır. Veriler Mann-Whitney U Testi, Kruskal- Wallis H Testi, Spearman Korelasyon Katsayısı ve Basit Doğrusal Regresyon ile analiz edilmiştir. Araştırmanın en önemli bulgusu sosyal hizmet bölümü öğrencilerinde özgeciliğin empatik eğilimin anlamlı bir yordayıcısı olduğudur. Araştırmanın sonuçlarına göre, öğrencilerin empatik eğilim ile özgecilik düzeyleri arasında orta düzeyde ve pozitif anlamlı bir ilişki olduğu saptanmıştır. Ayrıca, öğrencilerin sınıf düzeyi ve sosyal çevrelerine göre empatik eğilim ve özgecilik düzeylerinde bir farklılık bulunmazken; cinsiyetlerine göre anlamlı derecede farklılık bulunmuştur. Sosyal hizmet bölümüne isteyerek gelen öğrencilerin empatik eğilim puanlarının, bu bölümü istemeyerek tercih eden öğrencilerin puanlarına göre daha yüksek olduğu ve özgecilik düzeylerinin diğer öğrencilerden anlamlı derecede yüksek olduğu görülmüştür. Sosyal hizmet bölümü öğrencilerinin empatik eğilimlerini ve özgecilik düzeylerini etkileyen daha kapsamlı nitel araştırmaların yapılması ve boylamsal çalışmaların yapılması yararlı bulgular sağlayabilir.

The aim of this study is to identify the relation between empathic tendencies and altruism levels of students at the social work department; and to determine whether empathic tendency and altruism levels show significant difference in terms of gender, class level, willingness in choosing the department and social environment variables. Empathic tendency and altruism are accepted as the main values and skills that are directly related to social work discipline. However, as a result of the literature review, it has been observed that while the number of studies on empathy is high, the number of studies directly focusing on altruism as well as the relationship between empathy and altruism is quite low within the scope of social work discipline. The relationship between empathic tendencies and altruistic behaviour levels of students at the social work department gains importance when considering this gap in the literature and the possibility of improvement of these skills in education process. Results of this study may provide a data source for social work education. This study is a quantitative research using screening model. The sampling population of the research is composed of 459 students who study at Social Work Department at Bingöl University. As a data collection tool in this study; socio-demographic data form prepared by the researchers, the Empathic Tendency Scale (ETS) developed by Dökmen (1988) and the Altruism Scale (AS) developed by Ümmet, Ekşi and Otrar (2013) were used. The data were analysed using Mann-Whitney U Test, Kruskal-Wallis H Test, Spearman’s Correlation Coefficient and Simple Linear Regression. The most important finding of the research is that altruism among students at the social work department is a significant predictor of empathic tendency. According to the results of the research, a medium-level and positive significant relationship has been identified between empathic tendency and altruism levels of students. Moreover, while empathic tendency and altruism levels of students do not differ depending on their class levels and social environments, a significant difference caused by their gender has been identified. It has been observed that the empathic tendency scores of students who chose this department willingly are higher than those who chose the department unwillingly, and that their altruism levels are significantly higher than other students. Conducting more comprehensive quantitative research studies and longitudinal studies affecting the empathic tendency and altruism levels of students at the social work department may provide useful findings.
