An Intellectual Biography:the Architectural Discourse of Turgut Cansever

Abstract

Bu tez, Turgut Cansever'in mimarlık söylemini entelektüel biyografi yöntemiyle ele almakta ve onun düşünsel yönelimlerini tarihsel bağlamı içinde analiz etmektedir. Cansever, Türkiye mimarlık tarihinde yalnızca uygulamaya dönük bir figür olarak değil, aynı zamanda düşünen, yazan ve mimarlığı bir düşünce alanı olarak inşa etmeye çalışan bir aktör olarak öne çıkar. Mimarlık üzerine geliştirdiği söylem, sanat tarihi, estetik, din, felsefe ve kültür kuramlarıyla ilişkili çok katmanlı bir yapıya sahiptir. Çalışmada Cansever'in mimarlık düşüncesinin zaman içinde geçirdiği yön değişimleri kronolojik bir izlekte ele alınmıştır. Bu değişim, yalnızca biçimsel ya da kavramsal bir kayma olarak değil, aynı zamanda mimarlık ile düşünce arasında kurduğu ilişkinin yeniden tanımlanması olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Tez, Cansever'in 1947 sonrası yayımladığı metinleri dönemsel olarak sınıflandırarak, söyleminde belirginleşen dönüşüm noktalarını görünür kılmayı amaçlamaktadır. Özellikle 1977 sonrasında ortaya çıkan İslami referanslı söylem, daha önceki metinlerle karşılaştırmalı biçimde ele alınmış ve bu yönelimin bağlamsal arka planı tartışılmıştır. Tez dört bölümden oluşmaktadır. İlk bölümde Cansever'in yetiştiği tarihsel, kültürel ve ailevi çevre değerlendirilerek, onun entelektüel yönelimlerini etkileyen temel unsurlar ele alınmıştır. İkinci bölümde, mimarlık eğitimi sonrası ürettiği metinler ve tezleri incelenmiş; bu dönemin kuramsal yönleri tartışılmıştır. Üçüncü bölümde, söylemindeki dönüşümün kaynakları ve yönleri analiz edilmiş; farklı dönemlerdeki kavramsal kümelenmeler ayrıştırılmıştır. Sonuç bölümünde ise Cansever'in düşünsel izleği içindeki süreklilik ve kırılmalar birlikte değerlendirilmiştir. Yöntem olarak entelektüel biyografi yaklaşımı tercih edilmiş; Cansever'in fikirleri, etkileşimde bulunduğu çevre, dönemsel bağlam ve referanslarıyla birlikte ele alınmıştır. Metinlerde doğrudan yer almasa da onun düşüncesinde iz bırakan figürler ve kavramlar da değerlendirilmiş; metinler arası geçişkenlikler üzerinden söylem içindeki yönelimler tespit edilmiştir. Bu çalışma, Cansever'in düşünsel üretimini tekil bir anlatıya indirgemek yerine, onun söylemindeki katmanlı yapıyı ve düşünsel çeşitliliği görünür kılmayı hedeflemiştir.

This dissertation examines Turgut Cansever's architectural discourse through the method of intellectual biography and analyzes his conceptual orientations within their historical context. Cansever stands out in the history of Turkish architecture not merely as a practitioner but as a thinker who sought to construct architecture as a field of thought. His discourse on architecture is shaped by a multilayered structure that intersects with art history, aesthetics, religion, philosophy, and cultural theory. The study traces the shifts in Cansever's architectural thought along a chronological line. These shifts are interpreted not only as formal or conceptual transitions but as a redefinition of the relationship between architecture and thought. By classifying the texts Cansever published after 1947 into distinct periods, the thesis aims to reveal the transformations and ruptures in his discourse. Special emphasis is placed on the post-1977 period, during which a discourse marked by Islamic references becomes more pronounced. This later orientation is discussed in relation to earlier writings and contextualized within its historical and intellectual background. The dissertation consists of four chapters. The first chapter focuses on the historical, cultural, and familial background that shaped Cansever's early intellectual development. The second chapter analyzes the texts and theses he produced after completing his architectural education, highlighting the theoretical aspects of this period. The third chapter explores the sources and directions of transformation within his architectural discourse, identifying distinct conceptual clusters across different phases of his work. The final chapter offers an integrated assessment of continuities and ruptures in Cansever's intellectual trajectory. The study adopts the method of intellectual biography, which considers not only the ideas of the subject but also the environments, references, and interlocutors that enabled those ideas to emerge. Even when not explicitly cited in his texts, figures and concepts that influenced Cansever's thought are addressed to clarify the intertextual and conceptual transitions within his discourse. Rather than reducing Cansever's intellectual production to a linear narrative, this study seeks to make visible the layered nature and complexity of his architectural thought. By doing so, it aims to offer a deeper understanding of Cansever not only as an architect but also as an intellectual figure who played a unique role in the cultural and architectural history of Turkey.
