Abstract
This research deals with an important issue in the political history of Syria in the modern era, namely the unification between Syria and Egypt that took place in February 1958. This union lasted for about three years so that the two countries became a single state called the United Arab Republic. It continued until the separation, which led to the two countries returning to their former status and the separation of the army and other government institutions that had merged during the union. This study traces the political situation before the unification in Syria, especially the military coups, the influence of political parties on the military organization and the control of the military institution over political decisions. Especially at a time when the capitalist ideology represented by America and its European allies clashed with the socialist ideology represented by the Soviet Union and its allies, and each tried to include Syria in alliances that serve their interests in the region. It also explores the union, its causes and motives, the attitude of the Syrian government towards it, and the general political situation in Syria during the union, then the positive and negative that the union has created for both countries, especially the Syrian side, and then the attitude towards international unity. We will examine the political situation in Syria after the secession and the conflicts between the separatists and the Nasserists, and the consequences of the overthrow of the separatists in modern Syrian history.
