Book 19. Book Article Abluted capitalism: Ali Shariati's critique of capitalism in his reading of Islamic Economy(Sage, 2015) Şengül, SerdarIslamic sociologist Ali Shariati is a leading figure of the reconstruction of religious thought in the Islamic world known especially for his anti-capitalist stance and leftist reading of Islamic history. In the philosophy of history that he developed, he classified religions as religions of tawheed (unicity of God) and religions of shirk (multiple gods). According to this new reading of history, the main struggle is not between religion and secularism but between religions of tawheed and of sheerk. The issue of the gaining and the distribution of the property is central to his classification. Shariati argued that followers of tawheed and of sheerk can be found in all religions including Islam. To support his argument Shariati explored how capitalistic understanding of Islam has been developed and legalised while anti-capitalist messages and orders of Islam were marginalised and illegalised just after the death of the Prophet Mohammed. He analysed the rivalry between his close companions over the content of a proper Islamic economic order and how this rivalry gave way to two contradicting understanding of Islam, marks of which can be seen today in the contemporary Muslim world. He coined the term abluted capitalism' to define the economic policies of Muslim sovereigns to make Islam compatible with capitalist economic principles. Book Review The actual and the possible: modality and metaphysics in modern philosophy, edited by M. Sinclair, Oxford, Oxford University Press, 2017, 256 pp., £50.00, ISBN 9780198786436(2018) Yirmibeş, Mert CanThis new collection comprises nine essays offering a wide array of views on modal metaphysics. One of the aims of the collection is to provide a recent survey of modal theories from the seventeenth century to the twentieth century. The book presents ‘analytic’ and ‘continental’ theories in modal metaphysics, with many diversely interpreted subjects, including the subjectivity and objectivity of modalities and the notion of possibility that was a focus of seventeenth- to twentieth-century modal metaphysics. The book provides interpretations of modal theories and responses to more contemporary issues, such as the (ir)reducibility of modal categories. The essays take diverse approaches, with some more exegetical and some engaging critically with the literature. Here I consider four essays within the volume that exemplify these approaches.Article Adsorption and inhibition effect of 2,4-diamino-6-hydroxypyrimidine for mild steel corrosion in HCl medium: experimental and theoretical investigation(SPRINGER HEIDELBERG, 2019) Yildiz, Resit; Yıldız, Reşit2,4-Diamino-6-hydroxypyrimidine (2D6H) was examined as corrosion inhibitor of mild steel (MS) in 0.1M HCl using potentiodynamic measurements, linear polarization resistance (LPR), scanning electron microscopy, electrochemical experiments, and quantum chemical calculations. All measurements show that the corrosion inhibition effectiveness is forthright compared to the concentration of 2D6H ranging from 0.5 to 10.0mM. Adsorption of 2D6H on the MS surface in the presence of HCl is determined to obey Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The electronic features elucidated by quantum chemical calculations were associated with the experimental inhibition productivities. The mechanism of inhibition was revealed by E-pzc measurements.Article AFLATOXIN M-1 IN TRADITIONAL HOMEMADE YOGHURTS MARKETED IN SOUTHEASTERN TURKEY(PARLAR SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS (P S P), 2019) Gürbüz, Semra; Kılıç Altun, SerapThis study was performed to determine the presence and levels of aflatoxin M-1 (AFM(1)) in yoghurt produced by traditional methods in small scale enterprises in Mardin and Sanliurfa provinces located in Southeastern Turkey and to evaluate the yoghurt in terms of food safety. A total of 90 yoghurt samples, 42 from Mardin and 48 from $anhurfa were collected from small-scale retailers and tested for AFM(1) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). AFM(1) was detected in 34 (37.8 %) of 90 yoghurt samples at the levels ranging from 10 to 515 ng/kg. Five (11.9 %) samples (ranging from 10 to 515 ng/kg) from Mardin and 29 (60.4 %) samples (ranging from 10 to 101 ng/kg) from Sanliurfa were found to be contaminated with AFM(1). There was a statistically significant difference between the samples collected Mardin and Sanliurfa concerning the presence frequency of AFM(1) (p=0.000). The AFM(1) levels of 16 (17.8 %) positive yoghurt samples were higher than the legal limits. The results of this study have revealed that the traditionally produced homemade yoghurt is contaminated with AFM(1) and poses health risk for consumers.Article Aflatoxin M1 in Human Breast Milk in Southeastern Turkey(Springer Verlag, 2017) Kılıç Altun, S.; Gürbüz, S.; Ayağ, E.This study was performed to determine aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) in human breast milk samples collected in Şanlıurfa, located in Southeastern region of Turkey, and to investigate a possible correlation between AFM1 occurrence (frequency and levels) and sampling seasons. Human breast milk samples collected in December 2014 and in June 2015 from a total of 74 nursing women, both outpatient and inpatient volunteers in hospitals located in Şanlıurfa, Turkey, were analyzed using competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the presence of AFM1. AFM1 was detected in 66 (89.2%) out of 74 samples at an average concentration of 19.0 ± 13.0 ng/l (min.-max., 9.6–80 ng/l). There was a statistically significant difference between December and June concerning AFM1 levels (p < 0.05). Further detailed studies will be needed to determine the main sources of aflatoxins in food, to establish protection strategies against maternal and infant exposure to these mycotoxins. © 2016, Society for Mycotoxin Research and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.Article Aging and cardiac implantable electronic device complications: is the procedure safe in older patients?(ELSEVIER, 2023) Günlü, Serhat; Aktan, Adem; Kılıç, Raif; Günlü, Serhat; Arslan, Bayram; Arpa, Abdulkadir; Güzel, Hamdullah; Tatlı, İsmail; Aydın, Saadet; Suzan, Veysel; Demir, MuhammedBackground In this study, we investigated whether there is a higher incidence of cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIED) procedures related complications in older (≥75 years) than in younger (<75 years) patients. Methods This retrospective cohort study enrolled patients who had undergone CIED procedures (de novo implantation, system upgrade, generator substitution, pocket revision or lead replacement) at two heart centers in Turkey between January 2011 and May 2023. The primary composite endpoint included clinically signifcant hematoma (CSH), pericardial efusion or tamponade, pneumothorax, and infection related to the device system. Secondary outcomes included each component of the composite end point. Results The overall sample included 1923 patients (1419<75 years and 504 aged≥75 years). There was no diference between the groups in terms of cumulative events defned as primary outcome (3.5% vs. 4.4%, p=0.393). Infection related to device system was signifcantly higher in the≥75 age group (1.8% vs. 3.4%, p=0.034). There was no signifcant diference between the groups in terms of clinically signifcant hematoma and pneumothorax (0.7% vs. 0.4%, p=0.451, 1.4% vs. 1.0%, p=0.477, respectively). In multivariate model analysis, no association was found between age≥75 years and infection related to the device system. Conclusion Infection rates were relatively higher in the patient group aged≥75 years. This patient group should be evaluated more carefully in terms of infection development before and after the procedure.Article Aging and cardiac implantable electronic device complications: is the procedure safe in older patients?(Springer, 2023) Günlü, Serhat; Aktan, Adem; Kılıç, Raif; Günlü, Serhat; Arslan, Bayram; Arpa, Abdulkadir; Güzel, Hamdullah; Tatlı, İsmail; Aydın, Saadet; Suzan, Veysel; Demir, MuhammedBackground: In this study, we investigated whether there is a higher incidence of cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIED) procedures related complications in older (≥ 75 years) than in younger (< 75 years) patients. They were settled in different parts of the empire from the Balkans to Anatolia to the Syria and Iraq vilayets. By following this policy, the Ottoman state ensured that many Circassians would become part of the Ottoman army, ruling elites, harems and agricultural workforce. Anzavur Ahmed's family was one of them. Although he did not graduate from military school, he participated in the army during the war in Libya (1911), the Balkan Wars (1912-1913), and the First World War (1914-1918). He was also appointed as the governor of Izmit (1920). Anzavur Ahmet is portrayed as a rebel by Turkish official historiography, but in reality, he was much more than that. He was an Ottoman Governor, and supported by Ottoman administrators such as Damad Ferid and Ali Kemal, who were against the Kuvayi Milliye because they believed that the empire would eventually emerge from the chaotic atmosphere of the post-First World War period and make an agreement with the British. This article argues that although Ahmed Anzavur has been labeled a rebel and a traitor according to the official historiography, it is difficult to use these labels given the circumstances of his time.Book Part Akdeniz Bölgesi(2022) Özaltaş Serçek, Gülseren; Çimar, SüleymanBölgenin Genel Özellikleri Yurdumuzun güneyinde adını aldığı Akdeniz kıyısı boyunca uzanan, sahip olduğu 120.000 km²’lik yüz ölçümü büyüklüğü ile Türkiye yüz ölçümü toplamının yaklaşık %15’i kadar büyüklüğe sahip olan Akdeniz Bölgesi alan büyüklüğü bakımından bölgeler arasında beşinci sırada yer alır (1). Lung cancer is the most well-known adverse impact of nicotine. This work used a 96-hour FETAX test to examine how concurrent administration of glucose monohydrate modifies the effects of exposure to nicotine, nicotine sulfate, and/or glucose on ion channels and membrane potential in Xenopus leavis embryos at an early stage of development. In-vitro fertilised embryos were treated with nicotine and glucose alone or in combination for this aim, and the effects of those treatments were then assessed for potential teratogenic effects. At the conclusion of the FETAX technique, the ratios of healthy, abnormal, and dead embryos were calculated, and the length of embryos in each treatment group was assessed. The ratios of abnormal and dead embryos were considerably higher with nicotine treatment alone compared to controls. Compared to the results of the nicotine-alone treatment group, the ratio of aberrant embryos was marginally reduced by concurrent glucose and nicotine therapy. In contrast, the ratio of normal embryos was raised. Additionally, treatments with glucose, nicotine, and Nic+Glu significantly altered the resting membrane potentials of fertilised oocytes (p < 0.001). Our findings indicated that the simultaneous treatment groups that also received glucose had a protective impact on embryos. Such structured, more sophisticated research is required to confirm these findings.Article Analysis of bioactive compounds using LC-ESI-MS/MS, cytotoxic, antimicrobial effects, and enzyme activities from Cyclotrichium origanifolium(Wiley Online Library, 2022) Aktepe, Necmettin; Keskin, Cumali; Baran, Ayşe; Baran, Mehmet Fırat; Keskin, Cumali; Taşkin, Abdullah; Yavuz, Ömer; Demirtaş, İbrahim; Oğuz, Ercan; Jahan, IsratCyclotrichium origanifolium is a medicinal plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family. In this study, phenolic content analysis, antimicrobial effects, and cytotoxic effects of extracts of C. origanifolium were investigated. In the extracts, phenolic compound analysis by the liquid chromatography–electrospray ionization– tandem mass spectrometry method, antimicrobial effect by the minimum inhibition concentration method, and cytotoxic effect on human dermal fibroblasts (HDF), glioblastoma cell (U87), ovarian adenocarcinoma cell (Skov-3), and human colorectal adenocarcinoma cell (CaCo-2) cancer cell lines were investigated. Cytotoxicity analyses were performed by the MTT method. In addition, the GST and AChE enzyme activities of the extracts were also measured. Around 18 compounds were detected in both the methanol and ethanol extract. It was found that the best antimicrobial effect on Gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa was on methanol extract, while the ethanol extract was on Candida albicans fungus (respectively, 2.50mg/ml, 5.0 μg/ml). A 500μg/ml of methanol extract has been shown to have cytotoxic activity high effect on HDF cells. GST and AChE activity were found to decrease in a concentration-dependent manner.Article The analysis of Syriac philosophical activities in the context of translation movements(SILA SCIENCE, 2012) Doru, Mehmet NesimDealing with the Syriac tradition of philosophy through translation activities will provide us more accurate information about philosophical activities of Syrians spanning a wide period such as ten centuries. Otherwise, philosophical activities of Syrians will be limited to a one-way translation movement such as repeated failures in most of the time, and thus, we will be prevented to see the picture as a whole. This study deals with the periods and introduces their basic features.Article Analysis of the names of accommodation establishments in Bulgaria(Anatolia, 2021) Seyitoğlu, Faruk; Ivanov, Stanislav; Dimitrova, FaniThis paper identifies the categories of accommodation establishments’ names in Bulgaria and determines the role of a property’s characteristics (category, location, type, and size/capacity) on the chosen name using a quantitative approach. The findings indicate that male, female, and family names, and names indicating geographic toponyms, represent nearly half of all names. Plants, emotions, and quality-related words are also widely used. Furthermore, results reveal that category, location, size, and type of establishment influence the naming of establishments. In addition, the findings illustrate that Bulgarian names prevail in the naming of establishments. Binary logistic regression reveals that urban, higher category, and larger properties are more likely to have foreign names. The theoretical and destination marketing implications are discussed as well.Article Animal exploitation at the Olympos, southwestern Anatolia: Zooarchaeological analysis(ScienceDirect, 2022) Sıddıq, Abu Bakar; Olcay-Uçkan, B. Yelda; Öztaşkin, Muradiye; Sıddıq, Abu Bakar; Öncü, Emre; Öztaşkin, Gökçen K.; Chrószcz, AleksanderfThis study presents analysis of animal remains unearthed from 2006 to 2021 excavations at Olympos, an important city of ancient Lycia, southwestern Turkey. Seven faunal assemblages were unearthed from seven distinct areas of the city. Each of them was studied according to their distinct archaeological contexts. The zooarchaeological observation was based on taxonomic identification, species diversity, kill-off patterns, nature of bone modification, including taphonomic and anthropogenic marks, and type of species exploitation at the site. The results demonstrated that the majority of the specimens were consumption residues, comprising mainly of ungulate and carnivore mammals, birds and marine fish and mollusks. Goat remains were the most common in all the assemblages, which is consistent with common animal exploitation patterns in Anatolia. Fish bones mostly represented bonito (Sarda sarda), tuna (Thunnus thynnus) and shark (Carcharhinidae sp.). Among the mollusks, the shells of Triton trumpet, rarely found in the Roman-Byzantine Anatolia, were clearly used as trumpets. As Olympos was an important harbour with a strategic location by the Mediterranean Sea, its faunal remains shed new light on the coastal dietary habbit, animal economy, and cultural contacts in the Roman and Early Byzantine periods in Anatolia.
