It affects individuals of all ages, races, and backgrounds. Since drugs used to treat cancer cannot distinguish between cancerous and healthy cells, they cause systemic toxicity along with serious side effects. Recently, controlled drug-release systems have been developed to reduce the side effects caused by anticancer drugs used for treatment. Morin is an anticancer drug with a flavonol structure. It has been extensively researched for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumoral, and antibacterial properties, especially found in Chinese herbs and fruits, and its multiple positive effects on different diseases. In this study, a nanocomposite with magnetic properties was synthesized by coating biocompatible activated carbon obtained using the fruits of the Celtis tournefortii plant on the surface of iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles. Characterization of the synthesized activated carbon-coated iron oxide magnetic nanocomposite was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, dynamic light scattering, zeta potential, and vibrating sample magnetometry. The cytotoxic effects of the drug-loaded magnetic nanocomposite were examined in HT-29 (colorectal), T98-G (glioblastoma) cancer cell lines, and human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) healthy cell line. The morin loading and release behavior of the activated carbon-coated iron oxide magnetic nanocomposite were studied, and the results showed that up to 60% of the adsorbed morin was released within 4 h. In summary, activated carbon-coated iron oxide magnetic nanocomposite carriers have shown promising results for the delivery of the morin drug.Article Acute Cyanide Intoxication Due To Apricot Seed Ingestion(Soc Argentina Pediatria, 2024) Talay, Mehmet N.; Gungor, Emre; Orhan, Ozhan; Department of Internal Medical Sciences / Dahili Tıp Bilimleri Bölümü; 10. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiIntroduction : Cyanide poisoning, whether it be accidental or intentional, remains a significant danger to adults and children, especially in societies where agriculture is a primary source of income. We examined the clinical follow-up, complications, and results of cyanide poisoning cases that occurred after eating the pits and seeds of plants containing cyanide glycosides, such as apricot kernels and almonds. Methods : Between 01/01/2017 and 01/08/2022, 14 children aged 1-18 years who were followed up with a prediagnosis of cyanide poisoning in our Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) were retrospectively analysed. Results : Eight of the patients followed with a preliminary diagnosis of cyanide poisoning were female and six were male. The most common admission month was July (42.8%) coinciding with the agricultural season. The most common symptoms at presentation were weakness and fatigue (n = 7). In the PICU, 4 patients presented lip cyanosis; 3, altered level of consciousness. Vomiting, seizure, headache, dizziness and palpitatons were less frequent. Four patients were treated with hydroxocobalamin (Cyanokit (R) ) as an antidote due to acidosis in their blood gases. All patients treated for cyanide poisoning were discharged. Conclusions : Cyanide poisoning should be considered in paediatric patients with suspicious findings, sudden loss of consciousness, increased anion gap acidosis and lactic acidosis. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiBackground: In this study, we investigated whether there is a higher incidence of cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIED) procedures related complications in older (≥ 75 years) than in younger (< 75 years) patients. Methods: This retrospective cohort study enrolled patients who had undergone CIED procedures (de novo implantation, system upgrade, generator substitution, pocket revision or lead replacement) at two heart centers in Turkey between January 2011 and May 2023. The primary composite endpoint included clinically significant hematoma (CSH), pericardial effusion or tamponade, pneumothorax, and infection related to the device system. Secondary outcomes included each component of the composite end point. Results: The overall sample included 1923 patients (1419 < 75 years and 504 aged ≥ 75 years). There was no difference between the groups in terms of cumulative events defined as primary outcome (3.5% vs. 4.4%, p = 0.393). Infection related to device system was significantly higher in the ≥ 75 age group (1.8% vs. 3.4%, p = 0.034). There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of clinically significant hematoma and pneumothorax (0.7% vs. 0.4%, p = 0.451, 1.4% vs. 1.0%, p = 0.477, respectively). In multivariate model analysis, no association was found between age ≥ 75 years and infection related to the device system. Conclusion: Infection rates were relatively higher in the patient group aged ≥ 75 years. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiIn the study, the ameliorating effects of alfa lipoic acid (ALA) against doxorubicin-induced testicular apoptosis, oxidative stress and disrupted mitochondrial fusion were investigated in male rats. Rats were divided into four groups as control, doxorubicin (DOX), DOX + ALA and ALA. A single dose of 15 mg/kg DOX was administered i.p to the DOX and DOX + ALA groups. 50 mg/kg ALA was given to the DOX + ALA and ALA groups by oral gavage every other day. After 28 days, rat testes and serum samples were collected and analysed. Administration of DOX alone caused a decrease in body and relative testicular weights, seminiferous tubule diameter and germinal epithelium thickness, Johnsen's score and serum testosterone levels. DOX treatment led to severe testicular damage such as tubular degeneration, and atrophic tubules. Also, the activities of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase were reduced, while the level of malondialdehyde was increased in the testis. The mRNA levels of apoptotic-related genes (CASP3, TP53, BAX, BCL2) and apoptotic index were increased, while mitofusin-2 decreased. DOX caused an increase in CASP3 and a decrease in mitofusin-2 immunoreactivities. Treatment with ALA markedly improved all of DOX-induced biochemical, histochemical and molecular alterations in rat testis. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiBackground: This study examines the 20-year trend of suicide in 46 Muslim-majority countries throughout the world and compares their suicide rates and trends with the global average. Ecological-level associations between the proportion of the Muslim population, the age-standardized suicide rates, male-to-female suicide rate ratio, and the Human Development Index (HDI) in 2019 were examined. Methods: Age-standardized suicide rates were extracted from the WHO Global Health Estimates database for the period between 2000 and 2019. The rates in each country were compared with the age-standardized global average during the past 20 years. The countries were further grouped according to their regions/sub-regions to calculate the regional and sub-regional weighted age-standardized suicide rates involving Muslim-majority countries. Correlation analyses were conducted between the proportion of Muslims, age-standardized suicide rate, male: female suicide rate ratio, and the HDI in all countries. Joinpoint regression was used to analyze the age-standardized suicide rates in 2000-2019. Results: The 46 countries retained for analysis included an estimated 1.39 billion Muslims from a total worldwide Muslim population of 1.57 billion. Of these countries, eleven (23.9%) had an age-standardized suicide rate above the global average in 2019. In terms of regional/sub-regional suicide rates, Muslim-majority countries in the Sub-Saharan region recorded the highest weighted average age-standardized suicide rate of 10.02/100,000 population, and Southeastern Asia recorded the lowest rate (2.58/100,000 population). There were significant correlations between the Muslim population proportion and male-to-female rate ratios (r=-0.324, p=0.028), HDI index and age-standardized suicide rates (r=-0.506, p<0.001), and HDI index and male-to-female rate ratios (r=0.503, p<0.001) in 2019. Joinpoint analysis revealed that seven Muslim-majority countries (15.2%) recorded an increase in the average annual percentage change regarding age-standardized suicide rates during 2000-2019. Conclusions: Most Muslim-majority countries had lower age-standardized suicide rates than the global average, which might reflect religious belief and practice or due to Muslim laws in their judicial and social structure which may lead to underreporting. In this study, phenolic content analysis, antimicrobial effects, and cytotoxic effects of extracts of C. origanifolium were investigated. In the extracts, phenolic compound analysis by the liquid chromatography–electrospray ionization– tandem mass spectrometry method, antimicrobial effect by the minimum inhibition concentration method, and cytotoxic effect on human dermal fibroblasts (HDF), glioblastoma cell (U87), ovarian adenocarcinoma cell (Skov-3), and human colorectal adenocarcinoma cell (CaCo-2) cancer cell lines were investigated. Cytotoxicity analyses were performed by the MTT method. In addition, the GST and AChE enzyme activities of the extracts were also measured. Around 18 compounds were detected in both the methanol and ethanol extract. It was found that the best antimicrobial effect on Gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa was on methanol extract, while the ethanol extract was on Candida albicans fungus (respectively, 2.50mg/ml, 5.0 μg/ml). A 500μg/ml of methanol extract has been shown to have cytotoxic activity high effect on HDF cells. Despite sustained research efforts, the outbreak remains uncontrolled, with affected patients still lacking proper treatment. This review is a valuable asset for researchers and practitioners aiming to delve into the yet unexplored potential of Anatolian flora in the fight against COVID-19 and other viral infections. Numerous medicinal plants in Anatolia, such as thyme, sage, cannabis, oregano, licorice root, and Origanum sp., contain bioactive compounds with proven antiviral properties that have been used in the region for centuries. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiWe present the first ancient DNA data from the Pre-Pottery Neolithic of Mesopotamia (Southeastern Turkey and Northern Iraq), Cyprus, and the Northwestern Zagros, along with the first data from Neolithic Armenia. We show that these and neighboring populations were formed through admixture of pre-Neolithic sources related to Anatolian, Caucasus, and Levantine hunter-gatherers, forming a Neolithic continuum of ancestry mirroring the geography of West Asia. By analyzing Pre-Pottery and Pottery Neolithic populations of Anatolia, we show that the former were derived from admixture between Mesopotamian-related and local Epipaleolithic-related sources, but the latter experienced additional Levantine-related gene flow, thus documenting at least two pulses of migration from the Fertile Crescent heartland to the early farmers of Anatolia.Article Citation - WoS: 21Citation - Scopus: 27Antibiotic Removal from the Aquatic Environment with Activated Carbon Produced from Pumpkin Seeds(Molecules, 2022) Alacabey, İhsan; 21.02. Adsorption is one of the methods used to eliminate these pollutants. In this study, activated carbon was produced from pumpkin seed shells and subsequently modified with KOH. The adsorbent obtained through this procedure was used to remove ciprofloxacin from aqueous systems. Fourier Transform-Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), elemental, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) and Zeta analyses were used to characterize the adsorbent. The surface area, in particular, was found to be a very remarkable value of 2730 m2/g. The conditions of the adsorption experiments were optimized based on interaction time, adsorbent amount, pH and temperature. Over 99% success was achieved in removal operations carried out under the most optimal conditions, with an absorption capacity of 884.9 mg·g−1. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiObjectives: This study aimed to analyze the antibiotic resistance patterns of microorganisms isolated from intensive care unit (ICU) patients and evaluate their impact on mortality and length of ICU stay. Given the increasing prevalence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens in critically ill patients, understanding their resistance profiles is crucial for optimizing empirical antibiotic therapy and improving patient outcomes. Methods: This retrospective study included 237 ICU patients admitted between 1 July 2022, and 1 January 2024. The initial culture growth results from blood and urine samples were analyzed. Microorganism identification was performed using VITEK 2 Compact and conventional bacteriological methods, while antibiotic susceptibility testing followed CLSI 2022 and EUCAST 2022 guidelines. Results: A total of 237 ICU patients were included in this study. The most frequently isolated microorganisms were Escherichia coli (E. coli) (44.3%), Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) (35.0%), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) (25.3%), with Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) (31.2%) being the most resistant pathogen. Among Gram-positive bacteria, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) (12.2%) and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) (21.5%) were the most frequently identified multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens. Regarding antimicrobial resistance, carbapenem resistance was highest in A. baumannii (55%), followed by P. aeruginosa (40%) and K. pneumoniae (30%). Additionally, ESBL-producing E. coli (43.2%) and K. pneumoniae (38.5%), as well as carbapenemase-producing K. pneumoniae (18.6%) and E. coli (9.2%), were identified as key resistance mechanisms impacting clinical outcomes. Patients with MDR infections had significantly longer ICU stays (p < 0.05) and higher mortality rates. The Kaplan-Meier survival analysis revealed that A. baumannii infections were associated with the highest mortality risk (HR: 4.6, p < 0.001), followed by MRSA (HR: 3.5, p = 0.005) and P. aeruginosa (HR: 2.8, p = 0.01). Among laboratory biomarkers, elevated procalcitonin (>= 2 ng/mL, OR: 2.8, p = 0.008) and CRP (>= 100 mg/L, OR: 2.2, p = 0.01) were significantly associated with ICU mortality. Additionally, patients who remained in the ICU for more than seven days had a 1.4-fold increased risk of mortality (p = 0.02), further emphasizing the impact of prolonged hospitalization on adverse outcomes. Conclusions: MDR pathogens, particularly A. baumannii, MRSA, P. aeruginosa, and K. pneumoniae, are associated with longer ICU stays and higher mortality rates. Carbapenem, cephalosporin, fluoroquinolone, and aminoglycoside resistance significantly impact clinical outcomes, emphasizing the urgent need for antimicrobial stewardship programs. ESBL, p-AmpC, and carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales further worsen patient outcomes, highlighting the need for early infection control strategies and optimized empirical antibiotic selection. However, new approaches and treatment strategies for early intervention and prevention of depression in children and adolescents are still limited. Ashwagandha is an Ayurvedic herb widely used in the management of anxiety and stress. However, there is no information in the current literature on its potential effect on adolescent depression.ObjectivesThis study aimed to investigate the effects of depression on proapoptotic proteins and neuroinflammation and the antidepressant effect of Ashwagandha on depression-like symptoms in adolescent rats exposed to the Chronic Unpredictable Mild Stress (CUMS) model.MethodsIn the study, CUMS model was used to induce depression in adolescent rats. Rats were treated with Ashwagandha or Sertraline. To evaluate the antidepressant effects, behavioral tests as well as biochemical and histological analyses were performed. Forced Swim Test (FST), Sucrose Test and Elevated Plus Maze Test were performed as behavioral tests. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and nerve growth factor (NGF) were measured by the ELISA method in the fronto-parietal cortex. Proapoptotic proteins (Bax and Caspase-3) and inflammatory markers (TNF-alpha and IL-1 beta), as well as glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), were evaluated immunohistochemically in the fronto-parietal cortex.ResultsProapoptotic proteins (Bax and Caspase-3) and inflammatory markers (TNF-alpha and IL-1 beta) were increased in the CUMS group. BDNF and GFAP levels were decreased. Ashwagandha treatment was more effective than Sertraline in reducing the levels of these proteins and markers. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiThis study was conducted to evaluate the protective role of Pleurotus eryngii extract (PE) and Pleurotus eryngii extract-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (PE-CSNP) against doxorubicin (DOX)-induced testicular toxicity in rats. Male rats were divided into six groups: control (DMSO/ethanol), PE (200 mg/kg PE), PE-CSNP (30 mg/kg PECSNP), DOX (10 mg/kg DOX, a single dose, i.p), DOX+PE (10 mg/kg DOX+200 mg/ kg PE) and DOX+PE-CSNP (10 mg/kg DOX+30 mg/kg PE-CSNP). PE and PE-CSNP were administered by oral gavage every other day for 21 days. DOX-treated rats showed histopathological impairment compared with the control group. There was an increase in the apoptotic index, caspase 3 (CASP3), BCL2-associated X apoptosis regulator (BAX), dynamin-related protein 1 (DRP1) expression and total oxidative status (TOS) in the DOX group, while mitofusin-2 (MFN2), total antioxidative status (TAS) and serum testosterone levels of the DOX group reduced when compared with the other groups. PE and PE-CSNP treatments provided significant protection against DOX-induced oxidative stress by reducing TOS levels and increasing TAS levels. CASP3, BAX, apoptotic index and DRP1-MFN2 expressions were restored by PE and PE-CSNP. However, the PE-CSNP showed higher antioxidant and anti-apoptotic efficacy compared with PE. Cancer incidence and mortality rates are on the rise due to a combination of factors, such as a growing population, aging, and poor dietary habits. The Allium turcicum & Ouml;zhatay & Cowley plant is an endemic plant in the area where it grows and is consumed by the public due to its various benefits. This endemic plant, which generally grows in high-altitude regions, is sold in bunches because it is costly, mixed with rock salt, crushed into powder, and consumed as a spice. The cytotoxic and growth-inhibitory effects of A. turcicum & Ouml;zhatay & Cowley herb extract on human glioblastoma U373 cells, human colorectal carcinoma cell HCT-116, and healthy HUVEC cell lines were determined by the MTT method. After 24 and 48 h of application, logIC50 values in HUVEC, HCT-116, and U373 cells were defined as 3.737, 3.765; 3.513, 3.696, 4.476, and 4.104 mu g/mL, respectively. We conducted a cell migration experiment to study the A. turcicum & Ouml;zhatay & Cowley Extract (AT & Ouml;CE) impact on cancer cells' metastatic behavior. Our findings indicate that AT & Ouml;CE has an inhibitory effect on the migration potential of the cells used in the study. We conducted experiments using DPPH, ABTS, CUPRAC, and total phenolic content to assess the antioxidant properties of AT & Ouml;CE. The findings from the antioxidant activity experiments revealed an activity level of 0.20 +/- 0.046 at IC50. It is now the second largest cause of death in the world. The present study concerned antioxidant, anticancer and anticholinesterase activities and protocatechuic, catechin, caffeic acid, syringic acid, p-coumaric acid and o-coumaric concentrations in methanol extracts of flowers, fruits and seeds of Hypericum amblysepalum. Materials and Methods: Antioxidant properties including free radical scavenging activity and reducing power, and amounts of total phenolic compounds were evaluated using different tests. Protocatechuic, catechin, caffeic acid, syringic acid, p-coumaric acid and o-coumaric concentrations in extracts were determined by HPLC. Cytotoxic effects were determined using the MTT test with human cervix cancer (HeLa) and rat kidney epithelium cell (NRK-52E) lines. Acetyl and butyrylcholinesterase inhibitory activities were measured by by Ellman method. Results: Total phenolic content of H. amblysepalum seeds was found to be higher than in fruit and flower extracts. DPPH free radical scavenging activity of the obtained extracts gave satisfactory results versus butylated hydroxyanisole and butylated hydroxytoluene as controls. Reducing power activity was linearly proportional to the studied concentration range: 10-500 µg/mL LC50 values for H. amblysepalum seeds were 11.7 and 2.86 respectively for HeLa and NRK-52E cell lines. Butyryl-cholinesterase inhibitory activity was 76.9 ± 0.41 for seed extract and higher than with other extracts. Various scoring systems have emerged to predict high-risk patients, including the HALP (hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte, and platelet) score, known for predicting prognosis in cancers and stroke. This study assesses the HALP score's relation to lesion severity and long-term mortality in PAD patients. Methods We retrospectively analyzed 305 symptomatic PAD patients undergoing endovascular intervention. The following formula was used to calculate the HALP score: hemoglobin (g/L) x albumin (g/L) x lymphocyte count (/L) / platelet count (/L). Lesion severity was classified by TASC-II: TASC AB and TASC CD. Mortality data were obtained from hospital and social security records. Results The study involved 305 patients (mean age 64.4 +/- 11.8 years; 72.1% male), divided into survivors (208) and non-survivors (97). ROC analysis identified HALP score as the strongest predictor of long-term mortality (AUC: 0.736; 95% CI: 0.679-0.793; p < .001). HALP score (HR, 0.087; 95% CI, 0.025-1.300; p < .001), age (p < .001), DM (p = .007), and CRP (p = .013) independently predicted mortality. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed higher HALP scores linked to lower long-term mortality (Log-rank: 20.102, p < .001), with an average follow-up of 48 +/- 18 months. Conclusion The HALP score emerged as a robust predictor of PAD prognosis, surpassing individual components and other parameters. To the extent of our knowledge, no previous study in literature has reported acute MP intoxication in children. Aim: Our aim was to determine the clinical effects and treatment strategies of MP poisoning in children.Materials and methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of children <18 years of age with MP intoxication who were followed up in the Intensive Care Unit between January 2016 and April 2018 in our center. Results: Forty-one patients (M/F= 25/16) were included in this study. The mean age was 13.2±22.4 months (age range: 7 to 30 months). The patients presented with vomiting (n=23, 56%), cough (n=17, 41.5%), loss of consciousness (n=11, 26.8%), respiratory distress (n=6, 14.6%), convulsion (n=7, 17%), cyanosis (n=1, 2.4%), and abdominal pain (n=1, 2.4%) following oral ingestion of the substance. On their physical examination all patients with convulsion were in a comatose state. Thirty-two patients (78%) had tachycardia; 15 patients (36.5%) had pharyngeal hyperemia; and three (7.3%) had hiccups. Although the female patients had a lesser rate of symptoms than male patients, the difference was not statistically significant. Iron is vital for the body's basic functions. Iron metabolism disorders and inflammation contribute to the neurological complications seen in CP. The purpose of this research was to ascertain the association and correlation between markers of inflammation and iron metabolism in children with CP. Methods: A total of 181 children diagnosed with CP and 111 typically developing children were retrospectively included in the study. Demographic data, blood parameters, C-reactive protein, iron, total iron binding capacity, and inflammation markers were evaluated. Results: C-reactive protein (CRP), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and systemic immuno-inflammatory index (SII) levels of CP children were found to be statistically significantly higher than those of control group children (p < 0.05). Iron (Fe) and ferritin levels were lower in the CP group, while total iron binding capacity (TIBC) was higher. Spearman correlation analysis showed significant correlations between iron, ferritin and TIBC and SII. We aimed to determine the degree of kidney function impairment by evaluating urine neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1) levels. Materials and methods: in total, 15 obese, 26 overweight, and 26 control adolescents aged 10 to 16 years were enrolled into the study. Urine samples were evaluated for NGAL and KIM-1 levels using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. We investigated the association between obesity and related comorbidities with urinary NGAL and KIM-1 excretion. Results: no significant differences were noted between the obese, overweight, and control groups in urinary NGAL and KIM-1 excretion (p = 0.327 and p = 0.917, respectively). In the obese and overweight groups urinary NGAL levels were 50.39 [30.88-74.22] in females and 26.67 [23.24-45.59] in males (p = 0.013). Also, urinary NGAL levels were increased in obese and overweight adolescents with LDL dyslipidemia at 64.12 [30.98-114.32] as compared to those without LDL dyslipidemia: 39.51 [25.59.56.37] (p = 0.024). Furthermore, a correlation was observed between insulin and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance levels with the NGAL/creatinine ratio in the overweight group (r = 0.515; p = 0.008, and r = 0.483; p = 0.014, respectively). Such correlation was not found in the obese group. Conclusion: the effect of obesity on renal function could not be determined in children. A longer exposure may be required for obesity-induced disruption of renal function in children. Renal function may be disrupted by dyslipidemia in obese adolescents. Furthermore, obesity impaired renal function in female adolescents. Site selection is also critical for agricultural sustainability, as it helps ensure the efficient use of natural resources and avoids environmental degradation. This research proposes an evaluation model for walnut cultivation in the Savur (Mardin, Turkey) district in the Southeastern Anatolia region. Based on literature data, expert opinion, and local walnut producers' perspectives, a spatial decision support system was developed using Geographic Information System (GIS)-based Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA). This model provides farmers and stakeholders with a comprehensive evaluation of the different walnut-producing sites in the Savur district. It allows them to make informed decisions about the most suitable areas for walnut production. The land suitability assessment for walnut orchards included four primary evaluation aspects, ten main criteria, and forty-seven sub-criteria. Evaluation criteria were weighted using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). A land suitability map was created using the weighted overlay method in overlap with the evaluation criteria. The results showed 442.56 ha of very highly suitable land, 9789.43 ha of highly suitable land, and 1140.76 ha of moderately suitable land in the Savur district. In order to determine the accuracy of the study model, ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristic) analysis was conducted. As a result of the validation analysis, the constructed model had an Area Under the Curve (AUC) of 0.911, which indicates an excellent fit between the model and reality; therefore, the model is acceptable. Contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) is an important complication that causes poor outcomes in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between the TyG index and CIN and mortality in patients who underwent PCI due to chronic total coronary occlusion (CTO). Methods Two hundred eighteen individuals from three separate medical centers who underwent procedural PCI between February 2010 and April 2012 and had a CTO lesion in at least one coronary artery were recruited. According to the TyG index, patients were divided into two groups. Patients with a TyG index >= 8.65 were included in Group 1, and patients with a TyG index < 8.65 were included in Group 2. Patients were followed up for 96 months. The main outcome was the development of CIN and mortality. Results The mean age of the patients (65.8 +/- 10.94 vs. 61.68 +/- 11.4, P = 0.009), diabetes mellitus (60 [44.8%] vs. 11 [13.1%], P < 0.001), and dyslipidemia rates (52 [38.8%] vs. 21 [25%], P = 0.036) were higher in group 1. In multivariable logistic regression analysis, it was seen that age (OR = 1.04, 95% CI = 1.01-1.08, P = 0.020), chronic kidney disease (OR = 2.34, 95% CI = 1.02-5.33, P = 0.044), peripheral artery disease (OR = 5.66, 95% CI = 1.24-25.91, p = 0.026), LVEF (OR = 0.95, 95% CI = 0.92-0.99, P = 0.005), LDL cholesterol levels (OR = 1.00, 95%CI = 1.00-1.02, P = 0.024) and TyG index (OR = 2.17, 95% CI = 1.21-3.89, P = 0.009) were independent predictors of the development of CIN. Conclusion Our study demonstrates a correlation between the TyG index and the prevalence of CIN in patients with CTO undergoing PCI. Adding the TyG index to the routine clinical evaluation of patients with CTO undergoing PCI may help protect patients from the development of CIN.
