Article Metaphor between Arabic Tradition and Modern Western Studies(Dirasat: Human and Social Sciences, 2022) Aljarah, AmerThis research compares Arabic traditional study; which defines metaphor as stylistic and avant-garde art whose main goal is beauty and attraction; and it is subject to principles and requirements of claim when interpreted, according to Abd al-Qaher al-Jarjani, and modern Western cognitive study; which is devoted to studying metaphor to proclaim mechanisms of interpreting it. This can be found in the pragmatic study which is adjudicated as a theory for reading and interpreting with the case of Sirl. This also can be discernible in the epistemological study that defines metaphor as a mental process based on the interaction between language and thought, as is the case of Richards. So, in the modern western study, metaphor involves useful, pragmatic, and cognitive values, with attention to some Arabic traditional perspectives that include pragmatic and cognitive connotations. We seek to focus on metaphor functions and manifestations as well as methods of rooting and interpreting them.
