Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiKiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa) production in northeastern T & uuml;rkiye is facing an emerging threat from Armillaria root rot. Surveys conducted in August 2021 and 2022 revealed that 10.5%-17.5% of the 200-500 vines within each of 35 kiwifruit orchards in the Per & scedil;embe, G & uuml;lyal & imath; and Alt & imath;nordu districts of Ordu province exhibited symptoms of Armillaria root rot, including complete defoliation. Diseased plants exhibited diagnostic signs on their root collars and woody roots, including white mycelial fans, extensive wood rot and rhizomorphs. A single Armillaria isolate was obtained from each of the 35 symptomatic orchards. Molecular identification, employing DNA sequencing of the large subunit (LSU) region of rDNA, the translation elongation factor subunit 1-alpha (TEF1) gene and the second largest RNA polymerase II B-subunit (RPB2) gene, identified 20 isolates as Armillaria gallica and 15 as A. mellea. Phylogenetic analyses, based on TEF1 alignments, further supported the species identification with a 100% bootstrap value. To examine genetic diversity, start codon targeted (SCoT) marker 13 was used, successfully differentiating the two Armillaria species and revealing three distinct clades. Clades I and II comprised 15 and 5 isolates of A. gallica, respectively, while Clade III contained all 15 A. mellea isolates. Pathogenicity testing on kiwifruit seedlings (cv. Hayward) revealed the ability of both A. gallica and A. mellea isolates to induce disease. Rhizomorph-producing isolates in kiwifruit seedlings displayed high virulence, inducing severe leaf necrosis and seedling mortality, while isolates lacking these structures were non-pathogenic. This study identifies the first global instance of A. gallica causing kiwifruit root rot. This finding, along with the identification of A. mellea as a causal agent in the country, highlights the emerging threat of Armillaria root rot to kiwifruit production in the region.Conference Object Citation - Scopus: 1Assessment of Correlative Digital Drawing Features in the Design Processes of Unstructured Creativity(Ecaade-education & Research Computer Aided Architectural design Europe, 2023) Aydin, Serdar; Aydın, Serdar; Sik, Busra; Yoruk, Merve Sule; Aktas, Begum; 08.02. Department of Architecture / Mimarlık Bölümü; 08. Faculty of Engineering and Architecture / Mühendislik Mimarlık Fakültesi; 01. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiThis research critically challenges the conventional perception of drawings as mere technical blueprints and delves into the intricate integration of design ideation, abstraction, and speculation with geometrical manipulations and semantic labelling. By focusing on unconventional architectural design studio experiments at the undergraduate level, the study aims to explore the role of creativity in speculative drawing. It adopts a 3-dimensional design thinking process that transcends the rigid constraints of traditional drawings and embraces the fluidity of representational norms. Furthermore, the paper elucidates on the pedagogical aspects of the design studio, including the unstructured creativity inherent in the design process. The methodology employed in this study is exemplified through different stages of the design studio, incorporating a variety of representations such as 2D, 2.5D, and 3D, encompassing scalar, geometric, and material transfigurations. To assess the outcomes of the studio, the research utilises correlation diagrams that establish connections between digital drawing features at different stages and the unstructured creativity manifested in the final design. These scatter and correlation diagrams capture the syntactic relationships between the objects within digital drawings. The findings of this study reveal insight on the nuanced interplay between intuitive, reflective, and retrospective aspects of unstructured creativity during the design ideation process. By unravelling the intricate role of digital design tools and methods this research contributes to a deeper understanding of how design ideation is generated and manifested through the dynamic interplay of the modulating compounds of drawing objects. It highlights the significance of meaningful, conceptual, and speculative representations that directly relate to the creation of buildable forms and architectural spaces. Through its critical insights, this study paves the way for advancements in the field of CAAD and offers valuable perspective for architectural education and practice.Article Assessment of preoperative anxiety and negative automatic thoughts in patients waiting for corneal transplantation(Publishing Office of the University of Rzeszow, 2024) Tanrıverdi, Seher; Şen, Mehmet Ali; Genç, Hasan; 09.06. Faculty of Health Sciences / Sağlık Bilimleri Fakültesi; 21. Vocational School of Health Services / Sağlık Hizmetleri Meslek Yüksekokulu; 01. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiThis study investigated the adsorption behaviour of two cationic dyes, methylene blue (MB) and malachite green (MG) onto Pleurotus ostreatus, Armillaria tabescens, and Morchella conica mushrooms. The effects of contact time, initial dye concentration, and solution pH (3-11) were also determined. The adsorption on all mushrooms attained equilibrium within 120 min for both MB and MG. To evaluate the experimental kinetics data, the pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intraparticle diffusion kinetics equations were utilised. The pseudo-first-order kinetic model demonstrated a good fit with all adsorption kinetics. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were used to analyse the mechanism of the adsorption isotherm. The adsorption equilibrium isotherm was in a good agreement with the Freundlich model. Thermodynamic parameters such as ΔH enthalpy variation, ΔS entropy variation, and ΔG free Gibbs energy variation were calculated at 303-323 K. The results suggested that the Pleurotus ostreatus mushroom was the most suitable adsorbent for both cationic dyes’ removal.Book Part Blockchain-Enabled Strategies for Sustainable Business and Organisational Growth(Springer, 2025) Kurnaz, G.; Kılıç, C.This chapter examines the transformative role of blockchain technology in fostering sustainable business and organisational growth. From the 19th century to the mid-20th century, the Britain was among the states that attached importance to the Palestine region in order to protect its interests in the Middle East and to be the defender of the Christian religion. Some politicians, clergymen, scientists and military officers working in official and private institutions within the British State also came to the Palestine region to protect the interests of their countries in the Middle East. The defenders of the state, who worked in different branches, gathered information about the Palestinian region and presented articles that would help the imperialist policies of their countries. Among the British who travelled to the Middle East and Palestine to protect their country's interests was the orientalist, researcher, writer and intelligence officer D. G. Hogarth (1862-1927). During his scholarly work in the Middle East between 1887 and 1915, during and after World War I, Hogarth wrote numerous military-political reports, letters, memoranda and academic papers on the Palestine region and issue. This study analyses the views, recommendations and warnings of the orientalist Hogarth on the Palestinian region and issue in the context of his texts. © 2024, Muhammed Mustafa KULU. Department of History of Art / Sanat Tarihi Bölümü; 02. Faculty of Letters / Edebiyat Fakültesi; 01. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiLate Antique Northern Mesopotamia, which was situated at the eastern edge of the Byzantine Empire, was dotted with important cities such as Edessa (Urfa), Anastasiopolis (Dara), Amida (Diyarbakir), Martryropolis (Silvan), Constantia (Viranşehir) and Nisibis (Nusaybin). These cities were wealthy and highly cosmopolitan. As a result, the region had a sophisticated architecture which was by no means inferior to that found in other parts of the Byzantine Empire. This article deals with two monumental centralised churches in Northern Mesopotamia, namely the Church of the Virgin at Amida and the Octagon at Constantia. It concentrates firstly on the Church of the Virgin, which is an aisled-tetraconch church, a familiar plan type repeated in different parts of the Empire, and secondly on the Octagon at Constantia which has some unique features but shares the ambulatory design, long eastern chamber, use of materials and the monumentality with the aisled-tetraconch at Amida. By contextualising these two churches together, which has not been done in the past, this paper sheds further light on these neglected structures and reconsiders their reconstructions, dating, dedications and possible prototypes.Article Comparison of Chitosan-Containing Hemostatic Pad and Manual Compression After Coronary Angiography With Femoral Access(Sociedade Brasileira de Cardiologia, 2024) Kiliç, R.; Güzel, T.; Aktan, A.; Kaya, A.F.; Department of Internal Medical Sciences / Dahili Tıp Bilimleri Bölümü; 10. Faculty of Medicine / Tıp Fakültesi; 01. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiBackground: Femoral access remains a common choice in coronary angiography due to its easy accessibility and high success rate. Various techniques exist for achieving hemostasis following femoral artery catheterization. Objectives: The aim of our study is to compare the methods of chitosan-containing hemostatic pad (HP) and manual compression (MC) in terms of efficacy and safety in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with coronary angiography via femoral access. Method: A total of 204 patients from 3 centers were included in our study between August 2021 and June 2023. The patients were divided into 2 groups, HP and MC, with 102 patients in each. Patients were evaluated for back and low back pain, complications, and duration of hemostasis immediately after angiography and up to 24 hours. Student’s t test and Mann-Whitney U test were used for numerical variables, while chi-square test was used for categorical variables. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Hemostasis time and back and low back pain were significantly lower in the HP group (7.5 ± 1.1 versus 15.1 ± 1.6, p < 0.001 and 2.13 ± 1.29 versus 4.22 ± 1.69, p < 0.001, respectively). While ecchymosis was found to be significantly lower in the HP group (2.9% versus 14.7%, p = 0.003), there was no significant difference in terms of other complications. Conclusion: HP was found to be more advantageous than MC in patients who underwent coronary angiography with femoral access. While ecchymosis and back and low back pain were found to be lower in the HP group, the absence of the need for sandbags also increases patient comfort. © 2024, Sociedade Brasileira de Cardiologia. Faculty of Medicine / Tıp Fakültesi; 01. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiA pathological condition in the peripheral nerve tissue, which provides the connection between the organism and the external environment, negatively affects the standard of living. The nerve tissue histotechnology is of serious importance both for scientific studies and for clinical diagnosis. The fixation, which is one of the leading procedures for histological examination of tissues, aims to preserve tissue morphology. Another essential part of the histological examination is staining process. This study, it was aimed to determine the fixative that provides optimal histological appearance in peripheral nerve tissue. Therefore, various histochemical stainings of tissues fixed with some fixatives used in practice were compared. Sciatic nerves from each rat (n=7) used in the study were fixed with different fixatives and histochemical staining was performed. In histological examination, cellular (nucleus-cytoplasm) and intercellular morphological details, staining intensity and distribution were evaluated. At the end of the study, formaldehyde was found to be the most ideal fixing agent for all stains. Although Bouin and Carnoy fixatives differed according to the staining type, their fixation quality was similar in general. Glutaraldehyde did not give as good results as other fixatives in all stainings. This study is an important technical reference for clinical and experimental studies. © 2024 Cellular and Molecular Biology Association. We aimed to make a detailed comparison study on the protective effects of Nigella sativa oil, metformin, and vitamin E on the histopathologic effects of diabetes on the male reproductive system. METHODS: In the experiment, 30 rats were divided equally into 5 groups: Control, DM, DM+NS, DM+M and DM+E. To induce diabetes in the experimental groups, a one-time injection of 45 mg/kg Streptozotocin was administered. Rats with blood glucose levels above 250 mg/dl were included in the experiment. The experiment period lasted 8 weeks. Weekly body weight of the rats, reproductive organ weights at the end of the experiment, spermatologic data, immunohistochemical staining, TUNEL assay staining and morphometric evaluation were performed. RESULTS: According to Johnsen Biopsy Score and Seminiferous Tubule diameter data, the DM+NS group had similar results to the control group, indicating that Nigella sativa oil preserved the seminiferous tubule diameter structure better than vitamin E and metformin. There were head, neck and tail defects in the diabetes group. Based on the results of the applications carried out to evaluate apoptosis and proliferation in testicular tissue, it can be concluded that the treated diabetic groups, especially the Nigella sativa oil, improved the structure of spermatogenic tubules and also reduced the number of apoptotic cells, as shown by the results of the TUNEL test (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: We think that Nigella sativa oil is more effective on the mechanism of diabetes than other active substances and regulates metabolic changes and may be an effective therapeutic agent for diabetes treatment. © 2024 EDIZIONI MINERVA MEDICA.Article The Conflict of Balances in the Mediterranean Region and Its Repercussions on the Map of the Ottoman-European Conflict in North Africa in the 19th Century(Creative Publishing House, 2025) Şerifoğlu, M.; Meshref, A.; 02.14. Department of History / Tarih Bölümü; 02. Faculty of Letters / Edebiyat Fakültesi; 01. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiThis paper explores the imperialist expansion in the Mediterranean basin and its influence on the Ottoman-European conflict map in North Africa during the 19th century. This era marked significant Western imperialist growth across the Mediterranean and Ottoman territories. North Africa became a key battleground where the Ottoman Empire clashed with European powers competing for colonies in the region. Following the Berlin Conference of 1878, the Ottoman Empire recognized the strategic importance of North Africa in resisting European colonial ambitions, particularly their efforts to access Central Africa's resources by exploiting Ottoman territories. European nations, while united in their imperialist goals, competed fiercely due to divergent interests, leading to international conflicts and shifts in regional balances. This research aims to analyze the nature and background of imperialist expansion in the Medi terranean and its implications for the Ottoman-European conflict. Using a methodology combining deconstruction, historical analysis, and comparative studies, the research draws on Ottoman documents, newspapers, and a range of Turkish, Arab, and Western sources for an objective examination. The findings highlight two key conclusions: first, the imperialist expansion in the Mediterranean was deeply rooted in crusading colonial motives aimed at controlling global resources; second, North Africa played a pivotal role in shaping regional and international dynamics in the late 19th century. © 2025, J. Faculty of Letters / Edebiyat Fakültesi; 01. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiThe end of the 19th century corresponds to a period in which different problem areas emerged in the field of physics, characterised as classical or modern physics, which contain different structural features that cannot be explained with the assumptions of Newtonian physics. As a result of the studies carried out to solve these problems, a new type of physics, called “-quantum physics-“, emerged at the beginning of the 20th century, based on principles different from those of classical physics. The study of the behaviour of objects in the subatomic universe was the interest of quantum physics. The atom, once regarded as indivisible by Newton, became the object of quantum physics studies, which enabled it to be broken down into smaller parts and thus penetrated. Quantum physics changed the approach of modern physics to the universe, which was based on the assumption that it consisted of fixed and completely isolated fundamental particles, and led to the emergence of the idea that relational processes, not isolation, were dominant among the particles that made up the universe. This physics discovered the existence of new phenomena in the subatomic universe that did not fit the mechanistic-deterministic approach considered characteristic of the macro-universe. The emergence of these discoveries required a radical change in the fundamental concepts of “space”, “time”, “object”, “observer”, “measurement”, “effect”, “locality” and “interaction”, which classical physics was based on. This is because the nature of the phenomena that quantum physics draws attention to in the micro-universe does not coincide with the assumptions of classical physics regarding these concepts. This non-overlapping situation is essentially because the phenomena occurring in both fields arise according to different logical schemes. Classical mechanics is based on the fundamental principles of classical logic. However, the phenomena to which quantum physics refers do not conform to the basic principles of classical logic. In this respect, the findings of quantum physics cannot be understood using the structure of thought based on classical logical principles. Today, however, it seems possible to make this interpretation from the perspective of the fuzzy logic paradigm, which puts vagueness, the main focus of quantum physics, on its agenda. Today, the concept of vagueness has been incorporated into the scientific process. Parallel to quantum theory's positioning of vagueness as a principle, fuzzy logic has also integrated vagueness in all knowledge processes and included it in its structure not as a situation to be avoided, but as a situation to be evaluated. In this sense, this study aims to demonstrate that the basic principles of quantum physics, which cannot be adequately described by the classical mode of thought shaped by the principles of classical logic, can instead be depicted from the perspective of fuzzy logic, which has created a significant area of application in the field of engineering, especially in artificial intelligence studies. In this direction, this study first discusses the process that led to the emergence of quantum physics in general and proceeds to present its basic principles based on the views of the Copenhagen School, which has become the standard view of quantum physics. After mentioning that the phenomena outlined by quantum physics cannot be described within the limits of the three basic principles of classical logic, this study presents the fuzzy logic system as it makes such a description possible. Finally, this study attempts to illustrate in which contexts the basic principles of quantum physics can be associated with fuzzy logic theory. As a result of this investigation, this study reiterates that quantum physics can sufficiently be described from the perspective of fuzzy logic. One of the main goals of revealing this relationship is to create an important basis for philosophical activity. Just as Newtonian physics, one of the major developments that determined the paradigm of modern science, was based on classical logic, and in turn, classical logic provided a framework for philosophical ways of thinking influenced by classical physics, revealing the relationship between quantum physics and fuzzy logic will indicate that fuzzy logic can provide a framework for philosophical ways of thinking that will complement quantum physics. In this respect, this study aims to demonstrate that quantum physics and fuzzy logic accompany each other in the scientific realm. © 2024, Hitit University. Department of Management / İşletme Bölümü; 04. Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences / İktisadi ve İdari Bilimler Fakültesi; 01. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiThis paper develops a brand positioning strategy based on consumer-based brand equity for football team brands. The study is designed and validated in three separate empirical phases. In Study 1, the authors interviewed experts in the field using a qualitative research design and identified the football team brands with the highest consumer-based brand equity. In Study 2, the authors applied explanatory factor analysis to the spectator-based brand equity scale to find the appropriate factors for evaluating the identified team brands. In Study 3, the authors used multidimensional scaling and evaluated and discussed team brands based on the identified factors. As a result of the research, an ‘ideal brand’ had to be designed, taking into account the ten football team brands identified in Study 1 and the six factors identified in Study 2. This brand was rated ‘best’ across all factors and compared with other brands. The authors recommend this new brand positioning strategy to practitioners and emphasise that future studies should be conducted in other countries and for other sports disciplines. © HENRY STEWART PUBLICATIONS.Article Development of Malaria Diagnosis With Convolutional Neural Network Architectures: a Cnn-Based Software for Accurate Cell Image Analysis(Galileo Institute of Technology and Education of the Amazon (ITEGAM), 2025) Aslan, E.; 08.01. The traditional method of diagnosis relies on experts examining red blood cells under a microscope and is inefficient as it is dependent on expert knowledge and experience. Nowadays, machine learning methods that provide high accuracy are increasingly used in disease detection. In this paper, a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architecture is proposed to distinguish between parasitized and non-parasitized cells. In addition, the performance of the proposed CNN architecture is compared to pre-trained CNN models such as VGG-19 and EfficientNetB3. The studies were carried out using the Malaria Dataset supplied by the National Institute of Health (NIH), and our proposed architecture was shown to function with 99.12% accuracy. The results of the study reveal that it is effective in improving the accuracy of cell images containing Plasmodium. In addition, a software that predicts whether cell images are noisy or not has been developed. © 2025 by authors and Galileo Institute of Technology and Education of the Amazon (ITEGAM).
