Tumors of the parapharyngeal region are very rare among head and neck tumors. Lipomas also constitute a tiny proportion of parapharyngeal tumors so parapharyngeal area lipomas are very rare in the literature. Due to anatomical location, these tumors treatment is challenging. Clinical Report: A 20-year-old male patient admitted to our department with complaints of swallowing difficulty and a mass on the right side of the neck. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed, and it was reported as a 6 4.5 cm lipoma. He underwent excision of parapharyngeal area lipoma by a transoral approach. Conclusion: Parapharyngeal lipomas are very rare, and difficult to diagnose before they turn out symptomatic. The primary treatment approach in tumors of the parapharyngeal area is surgery and the surgical approach should be chosen according to the anatomical location of the lesion. © 2021 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Article Ability of Cha2ds2-vasc/R2cha2ds2-vasc Scores To Predict Complications Related To Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices(Wiley, 2025) Aktan, Adem; Kilic, Raif; Guzel, Hamdullah; Tastan, Ercan; Oksul, Metin; Guzel, Tuncay; Soner, SerdarBackgroundGlobally, the number of cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) is increasing. In our study, we aimed to investigate whether CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc and R(2)CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc scores are predictive of CIED-related complications. MethodsOur investigation was carried out with a multicenter retrospective design. Patients who underwent CIED surgery at two cardiac centers in Turkey between January 2011 and May 2023, 1676, were evaluated. The patients were divided into two groups according to their R(2)CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc scores. Patients with R(2)CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc >= 5 were included in group 1 (380 patients), and patients with R(2)CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc < 5 (1296 patients) were included in group 2. The primary outcome was defined as the cumulative events. Each component of cumulative events, such as hematoma, pericardial effusion, pneumothorax, and infection, was also defined as a secondary outcome. ResultsThe study's patient population had an average age of 62.9 +/- 14 years. Pneumothorax (1.8% vs. 1.3%, p = 0.444), pericardial effusion or tamponade (0.35% vs. 0.2%, p = 0.659), and clinically significant hematoma (1.1% vs. 0.6%, p = 0.376) were comparable between the groups. Infection-related devices and cumulative events classified as primary outcomes were higher in the R(2)CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc >= 5 group (6.1% vs. 1.2%, p < 0.001; 7.6% vs. 3.2%, p < 0.001, respectively). Modeling analyses showed that the CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc score and HT were also independent predictors of device-related infection and cumulative events. ConclusionIn the R(2)CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc >= 5 groups, infection related to the device system and cumulative events were higher. Patients with an R(2)CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc score of 5 or more and a high CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc score should be evaluated more carefully regarding infection and cumulative events before and after the operation.Article Acute Cyanide Intoxication Due To Apricot Seed Ingestion(Soc Argentina Pediatria, 2024) Talay, Mehmet N.; Gungor, Emre; Orhan, OzhanIntroduction : Cyanide poisoning, whether it be accidental or intentional, remains a significant danger to adults and children, especially in societies where agriculture is a primary source of income. We examined the clinical follow-up, complications, and results of cyanide poisoning cases that occurred after eating the pits and seeds of plants containing cyanide glycosides, such as apricot kernels and almonds. Methods : Between 01/01/2017 and 01/08/2022, 14 children aged 1-18 years who were followed up with a prediagnosis of cyanide poisoning in our Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) were retrospectively analysed. Results : Eight of the patients followed with a preliminary diagnosis of cyanide poisoning were female and six were male. The most common admission month was July (42.8%) coinciding with the agricultural season. The most common symptoms at presentation were weakness and fatigue (n = 7). In the PICU, 4 patients presented lip cyanosis; 3, altered level of consciousness. Vomiting, seizure, headache, dizziness and palpitatons were less frequent. Four patients were treated with hydroxocobalamin (Cyanokit (R) ) as an antidote due to acidosis in their blood gases. All patients treated for cyanide poisoning were discharged. Conclusions : Cyanide poisoning should be considered in paediatric patients with suspicious findings, sudden loss of consciousness, increased anion gap acidosis and lactic acidosis. The history of eating the seeds of plants such as apricot and almonds should be investigated .Article Citation - WoS: 22Citation - Scopus: 22Aflatoxin M1 in Human Breast Milk in Southeastern Turkey(Springer Heidelberg, 2017) Altun, Serap Kilic; Gurbuz, Semra; Ayag, EminThis study was performed to determine aflatoxin M-1 (AFM(1)) in human breast milk samples collected in AanlA +/- urfa, located in Southeastern region of Turkey, and to investigate a possible correlation between AFM(1) occurrence (frequency and levels) and sampling seasons. Human breast milk samples collected in December 2014 and in June 2015 from a total of 74 nursing women, both outpatient and inpatient volunteers in hospitals located in AanlA +/- urfa, Turkey, were analyzed using competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the presence of AFM(1). AFM(1) was detected in 66 (89.2%) out of 74 samples at an average concentration of 19.0 +/- 13.0 ng/l (min.-max., 9.6-80 ng/l). There was a statistically significant difference between December and June concerning AFM(1) levels (p < 0.05). In this study, phenolic content analysis, antimicrobial effects, and cytotoxic effects of extracts of C. origanifolium were investigated. In the extracts, phenolic compound analysis by the liquid chromatography–electrospray ionization– tandem mass spectrometry method, antimicrobial effect by the minimum inhibition concentration method, and cytotoxic effect on human dermal fibroblasts (HDF), glioblastoma cell (U87), ovarian adenocarcinoma cell (Skov-3), and human colorectal adenocarcinoma cell (CaCo-2) cancer cell lines were investigated. Cytotoxicity analyses were performed by the MTT method. In addition, the GST and AChE enzyme activities of the extracts were also measured. Around 18 compounds were detected in both the methanol and ethanol extract. It was found that the best antimicrobial effect on Gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa was on methanol extract, while the ethanol extract was on Candida albicans fungus (respectively, 2.50mg/ml, 5.0 μg/ml). A 500μg/ml of methanol extract has been shown to have cytotoxic activity high effect on HDF cells. GST and AChE activity were found to decrease in a concentration-dependent manner.Article Citation - Scopus: 20Antioxidant, anticancer and anticholinesterase activities of flower, fruit and seed extracts of hypericum amblysepalum HOCHST(Asian Pacific Organization for Cancer Prevention, 2015) Keskin, CumaliBackground: Cancer is an unnatural type of tissue growth in which the cells exhibit unrestrained division, leading to a progressive increase in the number of dividing cells. It is now the second largest cause of death in the world. The present study concerned antioxidant, anticancer and anticholinesterase activities and protocatechuic, catechin, caffeic acid, syringic acid, p-coumaric acid and o-coumaric concentrations in methanol extracts of flowers, fruits and seeds of Hypericum amblysepalum. Materials and Methods: Antioxidant properties including free radical scavenging activity and reducing power, and amounts of total phenolic compounds were evaluated using different tests. Protocatechuic, catechin, caffeic acid, syringic acid, p-coumaric acid and o-coumaric concentrations in extracts were determined by HPLC. Cytotoxic effects were determined using the MTT test with human cervix cancer (HeLa) and rat kidney epithelium cell (NRK-52E) lines. Acetyl and butyrylcholinesterase inhibitory activities were measured by by Ellman method. Results: Total phenolic content of H. amblysepalum seeds was found to be higher than in fruit and flower extracts. DPPH free radical scavenging activity of the obtained extracts gave satisfactory results versus butylated hydroxyanisole and butylated hydroxytoluene as controls. Reducing power activity was linearly proportional to the studied concentration range: 10-500 µg/mL LC50 values for H. amblysepalum seeds were 11.7 and 2.86 respectively for HeLa and NRK-52E cell lines. Butyryl-cholinesterase inhibitory activity was 76.9 ± 0.41 for seed extract and higher than with other extracts. Conclusions: The present results suggested that H. amblysepalum could be a potential candidate anti-cancer drug for the treatment of human cervical cancer, and good source of natural antioxidants.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 2Assessing the Prognostic Value of Halp Score in Peripheral Artery Disease: Correlation With Lesion Severity and Long-Term Mortality(Sage Publications Ltd, 2025) Evsen, Ali; Aktan, Adem; Kilic, Raif; Yalcin, Abdulaziz; Ozbek, MehmetIntroduction Peripheral artery disease (PAD) poses a growing clinical challenge due to an aging population, despite advances in treatment methods. Various scoring systems have emerged to predict high-risk patients, including the HALP (hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte, and platelet) score, known for predicting prognosis in cancers and stroke. This study assesses the HALP score's relation to lesion severity and long-term mortality in PAD patients. Methods We retrospectively analyzed 305 symptomatic PAD patients undergoing endovascular intervention. The following formula was used to calculate the HALP score: hemoglobin (g/L) x albumin (g/L) x lymphocyte count (/L) / platelet count (/L). Lesion severity was classified by TASC-II: TASC AB and TASC CD. Mortality data were obtained from hospital and social security records. Results The study involved 305 patients (mean age 64.4 +/- 11.8 years; 72.1% male), divided into survivors (208) and non-survivors (97). ROC analysis identified HALP score as the strongest predictor of long-term mortality (AUC: 0.736; 95% CI: 0.679-0.793; p < .001). HALP score (HR, 0.087; 95% CI, 0.025-1.300; p < .001), age (p < .001), DM (p = .007), and CRP (p = .013) independently predicted mortality. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed higher HALP scores linked to lower long-term mortality (Log-rank: 20.102, p < .001), with an average follow-up of 48 +/- 18 months. Conclusion The HALP score emerged as a robust predictor of PAD prognosis, surpassing individual components and other parameters. Lower HALP scores correlated with more severe lesions and reduced life expectancy.Article Assessment of Children Exposed to Maras Powder Intoxication(Folia Medica, 2020) Dalkiran, Tahir; Özaslan, Mehmed Mustafa; Acipayam, Can; Kandur, Yaşar; Unsal, VelidIntroduction: A smokeless tobacco known as Maras powder (MP) is commonly consumed in the southern region of Turkey. To the extent of our knowledge, no previous study in literature has reported acute MP intoxication in children. Aim: Our aim was to determine the clinical effects and treatment strategies of MP poisoning in children.Materials and methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of children <18 years of age with MP intoxication who were followed up in the Intensive Care Unit between January 2016 and April 2018 in our center. Results: Forty-one patients (M/F= 25/16) were included in this study. The mean age was 13.2±22.4 months (age range: 7 to 30 months). The patients presented with vomiting (n=23, 56%), cough (n=17, 41.5%), loss of consciousness (n=11, 26.8%), respiratory distress (n=6, 14.6%), convulsion (n=7, 17%), cyanosis (n=1, 2.4%), and abdominal pain (n=1, 2.4%) following oral ingestion of the substance. On their physical examination all patients with convulsion were in a comatose state. Thirty-two patients (78%) had tachycardia; 15 patients (36.5%) had pharyngeal hyperemia; and three (7.3%) had hiccups. Although the female patients had a lesser rate of symptoms than male patients, the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusions: Our aim was to inform the doctors about the clinical picture that develops after taking this substance and contribute to the understanding of the treatment approach.Article Citation - WoS: 9Citation - Scopus: 10Assessment of renal function in obese and overweight children with ngal and kim-1 biomarkers(Nutricion Hospitalaria, 2020) Unsal, Velid; Gül, Ali; Yılmaz, Resul; Özmen, Zeliha Cansel; Demir, Osman; Gümüşer, RüveydaAim and background:the incidence of obesity has increased among children, and obesity has been considered an independent risk factor for chronic kidney disease. We aimed to determine the degree of kidney function impairment by evaluating urine neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1) levels. Materials and methods: in total, 15 obese, 26 overweight, and 26 control adolescents aged 10 to 16 years were enrolled into the study. Urine samples were evaluated for NGAL and KIM-1 levels using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. We investigated the association between obesity and related comorbidities with urinary NGAL and KIM-1 excretion. Results: no significant differences were noted between the obese, overweight, and control groups in urinary NGAL and KIM-1 excretion (p = 0.327 and p = 0.917, respectively). In the obese and overweight groups urinary NGAL levels were 50.39 [30.88-74.22] in females and 26.67 [23.24-45.59] in males (p = 0.013). Also, urinary NGAL levels were increased in obese and overweight adolescents with LDL dyslipidemia at 64.12 [30.98-114.32] as compared to those without LDL dyslipidemia: 39.51 [25.59.56.37] (p = 0.024). Furthermore, a correlation was observed between insulin and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance levels with the NGAL/creatinine ratio in the overweight group (r = 0.515; p = 0.008, and r = 0.483; p = 0.014, respectively). Such correlation was not found in the obese group. Conclusion: the effect of obesity on renal function could not be determined in children. A longer exposure may be required for obesity-induced disruption of renal function in children. Renal function may be disrupted by dyslipidemia in obese adolescents. Furthermore, obesity impaired renal function in female adolescents. The normalization of these urinary markers as related to urine creatinine should be discussed.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Association Between Abo Blood Group, Peripheral Artery Disease Lesion Severity, and Coronary Artery Disease Coexistence(Elsevier Science Inc, 2025) Evsen, Ali; Aktan, Adem; Kilic, Raif; Ozbek, MehmetBackground: This study aims to investigate the relationship between ABO blood groups and the severity of peripheral artery disease (PAD) lesions, the coexistence of coronary artery disease (CAD) with PAD, and to identify which blood groups may be more predisposed to these conditions. Methods: This study, which has a single-center and retrospective design, includes 305 patients diagnosed with peripheral artery disease (PAD) between 2015 and 2021. The patients were selected from those with at least 50% stenosis detected by computed tomography (CT) angiography. The severity of PAD lesions was evaluated according to the TransAtlantic Inter-Society Consensus (TASC-II) classification, and the presence of CAD was determined by simultaneous conventional coronary angiography. Demographic data, comorbidities, and laboratory results were collected, and statistical analyses were performed using chi-square tests, logistic regression, and t-tests. All of these patients were divided into 2 groups based on their ABO blood types: O and non-O blood groups. Results: This study demonstrates a significant relationship between blood group classification and both the severity of PAD and the prevalence of CAD. Patients with non-O blood groups exhibited a higher likelihood of having severe PAD lesions (TASC-C and TASC-D) compared to those with O blood groups, who more frequently had milder lesions (TASC-A and TASC-B) (P < 0.001). The prevalence of CAD was also significantly higher among patients with non-O blood groups than those with the O blood group (54.4% vs. 36.4%; P = 0.003). In the logistic regression analysis, non-O blood groups, alongside age, hypertension (HT), and chronic kidney disease (CKD), emerged as independent predictors of severe PAD (P < 0.001 for non-O blood groups). Similarly, older age and non-O blood group status were identified as significant independent predictors of CAD (P = 0.004). These findings suggest that blood group classification, particularly non-O groups, may influence the severity and coexistence of PAD and CAD.
Conclusion: Our study reveals a significant association between ABO blood groups and both the severity of PAD and the association of CAD, and shows that non-O blood groups are linked to more severe forms of these conditions. These findings highlight the potential role of ABO blood groups in cardiovascular risk stratification, suggesting a need for further research to confirm these associations and understand their clinical implications.Article Citation - WoS: 7Citation - Scopus: 6The association of allergic rhinitis severity with neutrophil-lymphocyte and platelet-lymphocyte ratio in children(Northern Clinics of İstanbul, 2022) Cansever, Murat; Sarı, NeslihanObjective: The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between the severity of allergic rhinitis (AR) and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in pediatric patients. Methods: This study is a retrospective, cross-sectional, and observational study including 200 AR patients and 160 healthy controls. Of the patients, 39% were boys with a mean age of 10.5 years. The study included children with persistent and intermittent AR. Of the controls, 50.6% were boys with a mean age of 10.3 years. We compared NLR and PLR from blood test between study and control groups. They were also compared according to AR severity within the patient group. Results: The NLR was 1.64±1.29 in the study group whereas 1.18±0.31 in the control group. The PLR was 102.72±31.20 in the study group whereas 79.36±11.72 in the control group. When NLR and PLR were compared between groups, we found statistically significant differences in both NLR and PLR (p=0.003, p=0.001, respectively). We found a statistically significant difference when comparing both NLR and PLR in patients with intermittent and persistent AR. These rates increased with disease severity (p=0.000, p=0.000, respectively). Conclusion: Both NLR and PLR are useful markers for the diagnosis and severity of AR. Clinicians can use these markers to assess disease severity in pediatric patients at the beginning of the diagnostic process.Article Attitudes of Health Sciences Students in Turkey Towards Individuals With Different Sexual Orientations(Womens Health & Action Research Centre, 2025) Deger, Vasfiye B.; Kacan, HavvaStudy was planned in a descriptive design to examine how the empathic tendencies of students in the Faculty of Health Sciences affect their attitudes toward individuals who have different sexual orientations and was conducted with seven hundred and six students. The data collected online using the Student Information Form, Empathic Tendency Scale (ETS) and Attitudes Toward Lesbian and Gay Men Scale (ATLGS). Participants' mean scores were 62.98 +/- 18.79 on the ESS and 29.02 +/- 10.75 on the ATLGS. When the correlation between ETS and ATLGS scores was analyzed, a positive and moderate (p<0.05) correlation (r = 0.62) was found between ETS and ATLGS scores. These scores were moderate and the correlation between ETS and ATLGS scores was significant (F=438.585; p<0.05). Empathic disposition explained 38.3% of the total change in ATLGS level (R2=0.383) and increased ATLGS level (B=0.620). It was found that as students' empathic skills improved, their homophobic attitudes decreased.Article Automated Mucormycosis Diagnosis from Paranasal CT Using ResNet50 and ConvNeXt Small(MDPI, 2025) Toprak, Serdar Ferit; Dedeoglu, Serkan; Kozan, Gunay; Ayral, Muhammed; Can, Sermin; Turk, Omer; Akdag, MehmetPurpose: Mucormycosis is a life-threatening fungal infection, where rapid diagnosis is critical. We developed a deep learning approach using paranasal computed tomography (CT) images to test whether mucormycosis can be detected automatically, potentially aiding or expediting the diagnostic process that traditionally relies on biopsy. Methods: In this retrospective study, 794 CT images (from patients with mucormycosis, nasal polyps, or normal findings) were analyzed. Images were resized and augmented for training. Two transfer learning models (ResNet50 and ConvNeXt Small) were fine-tuned to classify images into the three categories. We employed a 70/30 train-test split (with five-fold cross-validation) and evaluated performance using accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and confusion matrices. Results: The ConvNeXt Small model achieved 100% accuracy on the test set (precision/recall/F1-score = 1.00 for all classes), while ResNet50 achieved 99.16% accuracy (precision approximate to 0.99, recall approximate to 0.99). Cross-validation yielded consistent results (ConvNeXt accuracy similar to 99% across folds), indicating no overfitting. An ablation study confirmed the benefit of transfer learning, as training ConvNeXt from scratch led to lower accuracy (similar to 85%) Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate that deep learning models can accurately and non-invasively detect mucormycosis from CT scans, potentially flagging suspected cases for prompt treatment. These models could serve as rapid screening tools to complement standard diagnostic methods (histopathology), although we emphasize that they are adjuncts and not replacements for biopsy. Rapid and accurate detection of these pathogens is essential to mitigate their impact. Fast, sensitive detection methods such as biosensors also play a critical role in preventing outbreaks and controlling their spread. In recent years, biosensors have emerged as a revolutionary technology for pathogen detection. This review aims to present the current developments in biosensor technology, investigate the methods by which these developments are used in the detection of pathogenic bacteria and highlight future perspectives on the subject. Microorganisms that cause disease are important not only to human health but also to food safety and environmental health. Therefore, it is important to detect these microorganisms quickly, easily, at a low cost and with accuracy. Biosensors have all of these features and offer a unique way to detect microorganisms. They are already being used in similar fields and are becoming increasingly portable and ergonomic devices. This paper looks at the uses of biosensors in detecting disease-causing bacteria and how their use will develop with greater technology. Outbreaks caused by pathogenic bacteria are a global concern, not only for human health but also for food safety and bioterrorism. It has been suggested that the inflammatory process plays a role in the pathophysiology of the disease. Sortilin-1, lipocalin-2, autotaxin, decorin, and interleukin-33 (IL-33) are among the factors involved in inflammatory processes. Objective To investigate the CSF levels of sortilin-1, lipocalin-2, autotaxin, decorin, and IL-33 in patients with IIH. Methods A total of 24 IIH patients and 21 healthy controls were included in the study. Demographic characteristics of the patients and of the control group as well as CSF pressures were evaluated. Sortilin-1, lipocalin-2, autotaxin, decorin and IL-33 levels in the CSF were measured. Results The CSF levels lipocalin-2, sortilin-1, autotaxin, IL-33 and CSF pressure were significantly higher in the patients group compared with the control group (p < 0.001). Decorin levels were reduced in patients (p < 0.05). There was no correlation between the autotaxin and IL-33 levels and age, gender, CSF pressure, and body mass index. The results of our study showed that inflammatory activation plays an important role in the development of the pathophysiology of IIH. In addition, the fact that the markers used in our study have never been studied in the etiopathogenesis of IIH is important in explaining the molecular mechanism of this disease. Conclusion Studies are needed to evaluate the role of these cytokines in the pathophysiology of the disease. It is necessary to evaluate the effects of these molecules on this process. © 2022. Three diferent organic substrates (bread wheat-grain, sawdust, and leonardite) were also investigated for their utility in cultivating and multiplying the strain. In-tray and pot experiments, the rates of seed germination and vegetative development of pepper, tomato, and eggplant inoculated with C. rosea at planting were compared to those of non-inoculated controls. In pot experiments, inoculating seedbeds with increasing doses of C. rosea strain ST1140 with wheat-grain substrate resulted in higher plant height values for all plant species, and the strain endophytically colonized the roots of all plant species. In-tray experiments revealed that ST1140 inoculation resulted in 2–4 days earlier and 10% higher germination rates for all plant species, as well as more vigorous and accelerated seedling growth (10–13 days earlier for seedlings at the 4–5 true leaf stage) on all inoculated plant species. Among three diferent organic substrates, wheat-grain was found to be the most efective for long-term cultivation and multiplication of the fungus, which could be of interest for its development as a commercial product. These results promised the strain ST1140’s use as a biofertilizer in seedbeds with a wheat-grain substrate.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Comparison of Evolut-R 34 mm Valve and Smaller Evolut-R Valves in Patients Undergoing Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation and Determination of Mild Paravalvular Leak Predictors(Kare Publ, 2024) Demir, Muhammed; Aktan, Adem; Güzel, Tuncay; Kılıç, Raif; Arslan, Bayram; Ertas, Faruk; Günlü, SerhatObjective: The main purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the in-hospital, 1-month and 1-year post-procedure outcomes of patients treated with Evolut-R 34 mm and Evolut-R 23/26/29 mm devices. Additionally, the study aimed to identify factors that could predict the occurrence of ≥ mild paravalvular leaks (PVL). Methods: Between April 2015 and May 2022, 269 consecutive patients who underwent transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) with Evolut-R 34 mm (n = 66, 24.5%) and Evolut-R 23/26/29 mm (n = 203, 75.5%) devices in a single center were retrospectively analyzed. Results: Patients in the Evolut-R 34 mm group had a lower female sex ratio (16.7% vs. 66.5%, P < .001, respectively), ejection fraction (50.7 ± 10.1% vs. 54.5 ± 9.3%, P = .016, respectively), and mean aortic gradient (7.4 ± 3.3 vs. 9.2 ± 5.0, P = .026, respectively) compared to the Evolut-R 23/26/29 mm group. The groups did not exhibit any statistically significant dis- tinctions with regard to technical success, the need for a permanent pacemaker, occur- rences of stroke, major vascular complications, PVL, major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events, or mortality. Peak velocity was confirmed as a significant pre- dictor of ≥mild PVL in both patient groups in the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. In logistic regression analysis; In patients with Evolut-R 34 mm valve, pre-TAVI aortic valve peak velocity (odds ratio (OR) = 23.202; P = .019) and calcium volume 800 Hounsfield Units (mm3) (OR = 1.017; P < .001) were independent predictors of ≥mild PVL. Conclusion: The Evolut-R 34 mm valve has shown comparable in-hospital results with smaller valve sizes. This condition negatively affects his sexual performance and the performance of his partner. Phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors are commonly used to treat ED. Arginase II plays an important role in regulating L-arginine to NO synthase in the smooth muscle of the human corpus cavernosum of the penis. NO is a molecule essential for regulating a variety of functions, including arterial blood pressure, penile erection, and energy balance. Substances such as vardenafil, alprostadil, papaverine, and resveratrol increase NO production, thereby supporting sexual function and vascular health. Additionally, NO donors such as L-arginine, L-citrulline, and alpha-lipoic acid provide effective alternatives when used in combination with PDE5 inhibitors. Medications used in the treatment of ED include vardenafil, alprostadil, and papaverine. In addition, although molecules such as L-arginine, citrulline, resveratrol, alpha-lipoic acid, and rutin are thought to play a role in ED, their pharmacological and molecular effects have not been sufficiently elucidated. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of these molecules in the treatment of ED by computer-based calculations, to obtain new information about them and to inspire new treatment strategies for ED. The physicochemical, molecular and pharmacokinetic properties of the compounds were determined by SwissADME software, and ADMET (absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and toxicity) data were determined by ADMETlab 3.0 software. Biological target and activity data were obtained by MolPredictX and PASS Online software. While the Gaussian 09 program was used for DFT calculations, PyMOL, AutodockTools 4.2.6, AutoDock Vina, and Biovia Discovery programs were used for molecular docking studies. It was found that L-arginine, citrulline, resveratrol and alpha-lipoic acid were well absorbed from the intestine, while rutin showed limited absorption. When their metabolic risks were evaluated, L-arginine and citrulline were found to have lower toxicity. Molecular docking results of rutin and resveratrol were remarkable. The electronic properties of the compounds were explained by DFT calculations. L-arginine and citrulline were found to have low toxicity and positive therapeutic effects. L-arginine and citrulline stand out as promising candidates for future research. Although resveratrol data are promising, unfortunately their potential toxicity and metabolic interactions require further investigation. It is important to learn more about these compounds or conduct research to improve their therapeutic efficacy. Although computer-based calculations play an important role in toxicity predictions, drug interactions, pharmacokinetics and toxicity properties should be carefully evaluated.Article Comparison of the Transobturator Tape and Minisling Methods in the Treatment of Stress Urinary Incontinence(Iniestares, S.A., 2025) Sagir, Suleyman; Basgut, Ozlem; Tuncekin, Adem; Ergun, Muslum; Turgut, OmerBackground: This study aims to evaluate and compare the transobturator tape and minisling surgical techniques in the treatment of stress urinary incontinence, focusing on their effectiveness and postoperative outcomes. Methods: This retrospective analysis included 113 patients who underwent midurethral sling surgery for stress urinary incontinence at Islahiye State Hospital between January 2016 and October 2022. The patients were divided into two groups: Those treated with transobturator tape (Group 1, n = 70) and those treated with minisling (Group 2, n = 43). Data were collected from medical records and follow-up interviews. The variables assessed included demographics (age and body mass index), preoperative and postoperative Urinary Incontinence Quality of Life Scale scores, and postoperative pain details. Operative details, such as procedure duration and hospital stay length, were recorded. Patients were also asked about postoperative symptoms, including groin pain and dyspareunia. Additionally, the duration of symptom-free months following surgery was documented. Binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to evaluate the effect of surgical methods on long-term well-being. Results: The transobturator tape and minisling techniques demonstrated similar improvements in postoperative Urinary Incontinence Quality of Life Scale scores (p = 0.213). However, the minisling procedure had significantly shorter operative time (29.2 min vs. 52.2 min, p <0.001) and hospital stay (1.33 days vs. 1.96 days, p = 0.003) than transobturator tape. Postoperative complications were notably higher in the transobturator tape group, with significantly more patients reporting groin pain (28.6% vs. 4.7%, p = 0.002) and dyspareunia (20.0% vs. 0.0%, p = 0.002). Logistic regression analysis identified surgical method as the primary predictor of long-term well-being beyond one year (p = 0.040). Conclusions: While the transobturator tape and minisling surgeries are effective for treating stress urinary incontinence, the minisling method offers advantages, such as shorter operative time, reduced hospital stay, and fewer postoperative complications, over the transobturator tape method. The erythropoietin (Epo)/erythropoietin receptors (EpoR) system turned out to have additional important functions in nonhematopoietic tissue. In this study, we aimed to investigate the levels of Epo and and EpoR, and also their diagnostic values in children with ADHD. Methods: A total of 70 children were included in the study, 35 drug-naive patients with ADHD (age: 6−12 years; male/female: 20/15) and 35 healthy controls (age: 6−12 years; male/female: 22/13). Serum Epo and EpoR levels was determined using a commercial sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. Results: The results indicated that the levels of Epo decreased in patients with ADHD compared to control (p < 0.05). On the other hand, EpoR levels increased in these patients (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the ratio of Epo/EpoR was significantly lower in ADHD patients than controls (p < 0.05). Receiver operator characteristic curve analysis showed high diagnostic performance for Epo and EpoR, areas under curve were 0.980 and 1.000, respectively. Conclusion: This is the first report to investigate the association between serum Epo and EpoR levels in ADHD patients. Our results indicated that Epo may play a role in the etiology of ADHD, and Epo therapy may be beneficial in these disorders if given in addition to the routine treatment of children with ADHD. Furthermore, our results reveal possible diagnostic value of Epo and EpoR.
