Ocular diseases manifest themselves through mostly visual indicators in the early or mature stages of the disease by showing abnormalities in optics disc, fovea, or other descriptive anatomical structures of the eye. Cataract is among the most harmful diseases that affects millions of people and the leading cause of public vision impairment. It shows major visual symptoms that can be employed for early detection before the hypermature stage. Automatic diagnosis systems intend to assist ophthalmological experts by mitigating the burden of manual clinical decisions and on health care utilization. In this study, a diagnosis system based on color fundus images are addressed for cataract disease. Deep learning-based models were performed for the automatic identification of cataract diseases. Two pretrained robust architectures, namely VGGNet and DenseNet, were employed to detect abnormalities in descriptive parts of the human eye. The proposed system is implemented on a wide and unique dataset that includes diverse color retinal fundus images that are acquired comparatively in low-cost and common modality, which is considered a major contribution of the study. The dataset show symptoms of cataracts in different phases and represents the characteristics of the cataract. By the proposed system, dysfunction associated with cataracts could be identified in the early stage. The achievement of the proposed system is compared to various traditional and up-to-date classification systems. The proposed system achieves 97.94% diagnosis rate for cataract disease grading.Article Energy and exergy analysis of an industrial corn dryer operated by two different fuels(International Journal of Exergy, 2021) Ünal, FatihIn this study, the data obtained after converting an industrial horizontal type corn dryer that meets its drying air temperature from coal to natural gas was compared by thermodynamic analyses. Before starting the drying process, it was assumed that the corn type DKC6050 with 24-25% corn inlet humidity dries when it reaches approximately 14% corn outlet humidity, which is the storage condition after the drying process. Energy and exergy efficiencies, drying rates, unit drying costs, specific moisture extraction rate, and specific energy consumption values of the analysed systems were determined using the data obtained from the experiments carried out at 90, 100 and 110 C drying temperatures. On the other hand, it was also determined that the unit drying cost was approximately 0.1-0.45 €/kg and the specific energy consumption was less than approximately 1,000-8,000 kJ/kgwater. Kullanılacak rezervlerin miktarını yüksek tutarak doğabilecek beklenmedik durumların sebep olduğu üretim kesintilerine karşı güç sistemini korumak mümkün olur, bu işlem karşısında yük atma işleminin uygulanma olasılığı azalır, fakat bu durumda rezerv sağlama oldukça yüksek bir maliyet ile sonuçlanır. Maliyeti düşürmek amacıyla rezerv miktarını düşük tutma durumunda ise olası kesinti ve arıza durumlarında sağlanamayan bir enerji söz konusu olur ve tüketiciler enerjisiz kalabilir. Bu iki durumu dengeleyici şekilde bir ekonomik incelemeye gerek duyulmaktadır. Geleneksel Ünite Tahsis formülasyonlarında, Döner Rezerv gereksinimini ayarlamak için en büyük çevrimiçi jeneratörün kapasitesi olarak belirleme yapan deterministik kriterler ile sabit bir rezerv miktarı benimsenir. Bu çalışmada, güç sisteminde tahsis edilmesi gerek Döner Rezerv gereksinimi, sağlanamayan enerji miktarı ve kayıp yük değeri gibi sosyo ekonomik parametreler dikkate alınarak elde edilir. Bu değer için fayda maliyet temeline dayalı bir yöntem ile hesaplama yapılmaktadır.Article Harmonics Mitigation of Stand-Alone Photovoltaic System Using LC Passive Filter(Journal of Electrical Engineering and Technology, 2021) Adak, SüleymanThis article investigates modeling and simulation of the off-grid photovoltaic (PV) system, and elimination of harmonic components using an LC passive filter. Pulse width modulation (PWM) inverter is used to convert the direct current to alternating current. It is very important in terms of energy quality that the inverter output current total harmonic distortion (THDI) is below the value given by standards. Harmonic components have negatively effect on off-grid PV power system. THDI should be kept below a certain level in order to prevent damage to the equipment in the off-grid system and to ensure a higher quality energy flow to reduce the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the solar inverter output current; LC passive filter must be connected to the output of the PWM inverter. There are many types of passive filters for solar inverters. One of the most widely used filter types is the LC filter. LC filters are used in off-grid systems. LC filter is smaller in size and lower cost than other filters. But it is more complicated to determine the parameters of the LC filter. Therefore, in order for the system to remain in a steady state, the parameters must be accurately calculated and analyzed. In this study, the output power of the solar inverter, switching frequency, bus voltage etc. values were determined and LC filter parameters were calculated. Since high inductance values are used in LC filters, the voltage drop increases in these filters. To reduce the voltage drop, the DC bus voltage must be increased, which increases the switching losses. LC filter is connected between the inverter and the nonlinear load to filter the harmonic components produced by the DC/DC boost converter, DC/AC inverter and non-linear load. Matlab/Simulink program was used in Simulation and analysis of off-grid solar system. Solar inverter output current THD was measured as 91.55%. After the LC filter is connected to the system, this value has dropped to 2.62%.Article The Karapapaks and their shifting loyalties on the imperial borderlands during the nineteenth century(Taylor & Francis Online, 2022) Çiftçi, ErdalThe Karapapaks were one of the less known native Turkish ethnic groups of the Transcaucasia, who overwhelmingly took refuge in the Ottoman and Qajar Empires in the late 1820s, after the expansion of Tsarist Russia into their homelands. This paper analyses how the literature regarding Karapapak movements and society was overwhelmingly shaped by selective, essentialist, and anachronistic approaches by some historians in Turkey and Iran. While the former determined that they were a loyal pro-Ottoman and pro-Sunni Karapapak society, the latter constructed an opposing pro-Iranian and pro-Shiite narrative. This paper deconstructs both approaches, and asserts that the collective ethnic and sectarian identities of this society played a secondary role in regards to influencing their cross-border movements. This paper argues that the approach of the current literature cannot explain this borderland society’s perpetual, multiple and multi-directional cross-border movement. Instead, the Karapapaks often manoeuvred the frontiers of the empires, and defected to another empire when it was necessary to, first and foremost, satisfy the needs of their own society, over those of any imperial allies.Article Negotiating empire in the Middle East: Ottomans and Arab Nomads in the modern era, 1840- 1914(Taylor & Francis Online, 2021) Çiftçi, ErdalHistorians of the Ottoman Empire have overwhelmingly undermined the roles that tribes played and marginalized them without having sufficient focus on their activities in their studies. The current literature approaches the nomads of the empire as absolute losers of the modernizing period of the Tanzimat and later periods.
