Article Ahmed Anzavur: Soldier, Governor, and Rebel. a Reevaluation of a Late Ottoman Military Man(Oriental inst Czech Acad Sci, 2023) Yelbasi, CanerFollowing the Russian conquest of the North Caucasus, many Muslims from the region were exiled to the Ottoman Empire from the 1860s onwards. They were settled in different parts of the empire from the Balkans to Anatolia to the Syria and Iraq vilayets. By following this policy, the Ottoman state ensured that many Circassians would become part of the Ottoman army, ruling elites, harems and agricultural workforce. Anzavur Ahmed's family was one of them. Although he did not graduate from military school, he participated in the army during the war in Libya (1911), the Balkan Wars (1912-1913), and the First World War (1914-1918). He was also appointed as the governor of Izmit (1920). Anzavur Ahmet is portrayed as a rebel by Turkish official historiography, but in reality, he was much more than that. He was an Ottoman Governor, and supported by Ottoman administrators such as Damad Ferid and Ali Kemal, who were against the Kuvayi Milliye because they believed that the empire would eventually emerge from the chaotic atmosphere of the post-First World War period and make an agreement with the British. This article argues that although Ahmed Anzavur has been labeled a rebel and a traitor according to the official historiography, it is difficult to use these labels given the circumstances of his time.Article Antecedents of Gastronomy Destination Brand Equity: an Examination of Gastronomy Experience, Motivation, and Destination Satisfaction(Advances in Hospitality and Tourism Research (AHTR), 2023) Kodas, Davut; Özel, Çağıl HaleThis paper aims to test the relationships among gastronomic experience, motivation, destination satisfaction, and gastronomy destination brand equity. (R. acetosella) were examined in this study. Materials and Methods: The chemical composition of R. acetosella methanol extract was identified by the LC-MS/MS method. The antioxidant activity was tested using beta-carotene/linoleic acid, DPPH free radical scavenging, ABTS cation radical scavenging, CUPRAC reducing power, and metal chelating activity methods. The cytotoxic activity was determined by the MTT assay using human ovarian adenocarcinoma (Skov-3), glioblastoma (U87), human dermal fibroblasts (HDF), and human colorectal adenocarcinoma (CaCo-2) cell lines. The antimicrobial activity of methanolic extracts was tested on gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeuriginosa) and gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis) using the in vitro minimum inhibition concentration method (MIC). Enzyme inhibition activity of R. acetosella methanol extract was measured spectrophotometrically against acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) enzymes. Results: The findings showed that the major components of the methanol extract content were luteolin-7-O-glucoside (1.599 m/L), polydatin (91,024 m/L), and shikimic acid (0.773 m/L). It was determined that the extract and standard antioxidant (a-tocopherol) results in DPPH center dot, and ABTS center dot + tests performed to determine the antioxidant activity were close to each other, and this value was more effective than the standard antioxidant (alpha-tocopherol) in the CUPRAC test. These results suggested that the plant's antioxidant potential was higher when compared with reference antioxidant compounds. It was determined that the methanol extract of R. acetosella had a weaker effect on the growth of the tested microorganisms than the antibiotics used as standard. The activity of the GST and AChE enzymes was found to be severely inhibited by the methanol extract of R. acetosella. Conclusion: Based on these findings, R. acetosella L. is a medicinal and commercially beneficial plant that warrants further investigation.Article Effect of Delivery Method on Breastfeeding Status in Primiparous Mothers Within the First 24 Hours(Springer Publishing Co, 2024) Yeşil, Yeşim; Bay, Habibe; Celik, Gulbiye Dinc; Bay, Habibe; Eksioglu, Aysun; Turfan, Esin CeberObjective: This study aims to evaluate the effect of the delivery method on breastfeeding status of primiparous mothers during the first 24 hours. Zand texts, which grew during the Sasanian era and indicate a lively theological discourse, were codified and took their final form after the Muslim conquests. Zand literature talks about Islam and Muslims in an implicit manner by means of concepts such as Tāzīg (Arab) Ag-dēnīh (evil/superstitious religion). Written for guiding Zoroastrian clergy in every subject, including theology and morals, these texts have a biased and negative attitude towards Islam and Muslims. Zands initially interpret Muslim conquests in an apocalyptic sense and emphasize that the end of world is near and consequently that evil reigns now. On the other hand, due to the obligation of living together with Muslims, Zands advise minimizing relations with Muslims in daily life. They present objections to the doctrinal attitude of Islam and aim at preserving the religious status of Zoroastrians. This paper stresses the view of the Zoroastrian tradition regarding Muslim conquests, the eventual coexistence experience and Islamic theology within the framework of Zands. © 2017 Bursa I˙lahiyat Foundation.Article Political discourse and semiotics(de Gruyter Mouton, 2024) Canakpinar, Betul; Kalelioglu, Murat; Gunay, Veli Dogan; Doğan, Yusuf; Kalelioğlu, MuratIn recent years, semiotics has put "life" at the center of the subject of study. There is the desire to be successful in the lifestyle and the desire to convey the right knowledge to the recipient or the correct use of practices in life. A semiotic theory developed by Jacques Fontanille recently showed that strategy can also be used in semiotic analysis. So, the way of life that Fontanille talks about is not just strategy. The process we call "lifestyle" has an order from small to large: There are basic signs, texts, objects, actants, practices, action phases, strategies, and finally lifestyle. In this study, we question the function of strategy, but generally of productive pursuit, in the analysis of political discourses. In our study, we reveal the approach of semiotics to political discourses that concern the whole world and discuss whether they are valid in every society. We emphasize political semiotics, which is used to understand the general structure of political discourses, and show the general functioning of political discourses with Greimas' Actantial Model. We conclude that politicians can influence target audiences by using various methods and discourse strategies.Article The Role of Technological Devices in Parent-Children Interactions: The Correlated Variables of Children's Well-Being and Life Satisfaction(Sage Publications inc, 2025) Ergün, Naif; Ergun, Naif; Aslan, Alper; Goksu, IdrisThis study aims to examine children's well-being and life satisfaction in terms of various variables related to parents' and children's problematic technology usage. Specifically, parent/child responses during their technology use and parents' phubbing and technoference behaviors were considered. The study was conducted with 185 children (8-14) and their parents (mother = 96, father = 89). Children's well-being was negatively correlated to their age and children/parents responding negatively to each other when engaged in technological devices. A positive correlation was found between children's life satisfaction and well-being as well as parents' phubbing and technoference. According to another result, the well-being of children having their own computer was significantly higher than those who do not have a computer. Finally, children/parents responding negatively to each other when engaged in technological devices negatively predicted the children's life satisfaction and well-being.Article A Stylistic Approach To Thomas Campion's there is a Garden in Her Face(Rector Ciu Cyprus int Univ, 2023) Alkan, HalitLiterary works come into existence through authors' use of language units in particular ways. Style is considered as the choice of linguistic characteristics from all the probabilities in language. Stylistics attempts to create an interaction of readers with the language of a literary text to clarify how a reader understands the text. This study examines how Thomas Campion manipulated basic linguistic features to form stylistic effects in order to produce meaning in There Is a Garden in Her Face. The analysis involves lexical, semantic, grammatical (syntactic), graphological, and phonological (sound pattern) levels. It helps to clarify the context of the poem. The stylistic analysis shows that the poem is very carefully constructed. All three stanzas in the poem are grammatically parallel to each other and deal with the lady's beauty whose face is compared to a garden of heavenly paradise where every kind of delicious fruit grows there. The unity of the poem is secured by the refrain describing a beautiful lady's lips. The graphological deviation shows a system of capitalization to foreground important words such as "Roses" and "white Lilies" in the poem to represent love/passion, and innocence/purity. The phonetic parallelism reinforces the system of parallel meaning in terms of alliteration and assonance. The poem is based mostly on similes and metaphors to make the imagery of the flowers and fruit growing in a garden much more vivid. With this, the lady's physical features are portrayed. The noun cherry is used with the adjective sacred which portrays that the lady's lips have not been touched or kissed by anyone. The same line which is repeated at the end of each stanza foregrounds that this beautiful lady is unattainable unless if she says her lips are fully ripe to become most valuable. Here, female beauty signals the ideals of Elizabethan beauty: white skin, blushing cheeks, and red lips. This study shows how Campion has been able to manipulate language which is an integral part of a literary work. Campion has created changes through a systemic use of language to get his message across to readers. This study may help researchers understand how Campion used stylistic tools in his poem. Conference Object Towards a Digital Practice of Historical Stone Carvings(Ecaade-education & Research Computer Aided Architectural design Europe, 2022) Hamzaoglu, Begum; Ozkar, Mine; Aydin, SerdarLocal traditional crafts in various parts of the world are being transformed by digitalization in tandem with broader social and economic changes. Mardin, a historical and cultural hub in southeast Anatolia, presents an exemplary case with its stone architecture. Whereas the number of skilled craftsmen is diminishing, digital fabrication ateliers are increasingly in demand in the city and rising in number. Training programs have already started integrating CNC milling-based techniques. However, despite the growing interest in adapting computational processes, how the craft knowledge is documented and conveyed to multiple actors for maintaining and even increasing the quality of workmanship is yet to be explored. We present a novel way to document carving procedures and to create an inventory of the 3D motifs using cross-sections as complements to front views. The research engages end-user participants of different backgrounds, such as stone cutting technologies and architecture, with little or no practical knowledge of digital manufacturing. The work focuses on a selection of motifs from the Syriac stone carving heritage in Mardin, the documentation of which is very limited. The proposed workflow begins with recording the surface depth and the variations in the cross-section using digital scans. In the second stage, we consider the potential subtractive transformations that result in the final form and reconstruct them as milling operations with a parametric and procedural modeling approach. Various milling processes are derived by relating the shapes to the available cutting tools and materials. The study contributes to creating the inventory of an engraving culture that has lasted for hundreds of years while developing a generally applicable and transferable knowledge base to increase its sharing and dissemination in the age of digitally supported production.Article Tracing royal consumption and socio-symbolism through faunal remains: Zooarchaeology of Iron Age–Urartu Ayanis citadel, Eastern Turkiye(Elsevier, 2024) Siddiq, Abu B.; Isikli, MehmetDespite having a research history of more than one and a half centuries, zooarchaeological investigations within Urartian archaeology are still very limited. This study marks a significant contribution presenting a comprehensive zooarchaeological dataset of 11,977 animal bones and fragments, primarily unearthed from a royal midden at the Urartian site of Ayanis citadel, Eastern Turkiye. The analysis encompasses species identification, age estimation, sex determination, and the identification of taphonomic and pathological changes. Rigorous measurements were taken to establish a robust zooarchaeological dataset. Logarithmic Size Index (LSI) was calculated to identify the morphological characteristics of Ayanis sheep, goats, and cattle, as well as potential sex -based exploitation of these animals. Contextualizing the results with faunal remains from contemporary Urartian sites including Bastam in Iran, and Karmir-Blur, Aramus and Horom in Armenia, this study presents hitherto overlooked archaeological evidence of animal -based consumption behavior and rituals, and possible animal taboos practiced by the Urartian royals and elites. It also offers new opportunities for comparative analyses and discussions for the biometric status of domestic livestock and animal -human interactions within the broader context of the Iron Age in the Lesser Caucasus and West Asia. It has experienced various migration waves from Asia, Awrupa and Africa. Recently, Turkey has confronted a huge wave of migration. Turkey tries to meet many needs besides the educational needs of refugees, but there is not enough study on refugess in the field of educational sciences in Turkey. Purpose of the Study: The purpose of this study is to analyze the Turkey’s progress toward meeting refugee education needs through the example of the Syrian Refugee experience. Method: The study uses a case study of the refugees in Mardin and its districts. The data in this study is compiled through interview and observation techniques. An interview form was developed and included the standards (access, integration, quality, protection, participation, partnership, observation and evaluation) suggested by the Office of UNCHR. Coordinators, directors and teachers at schools in Mardin, Midyat and Kızıltepe were interviewed. The researchers tried to turn the data into quantitative and qualitative indicators, taking into account the standards for the various levels of meeting refugee education needs. Findings and Results: Turkey supported refugee education in various ways; for instance, opening schools in the refugee camps and meeting various needs for voluntary schools. The results indicated, however, that according to measures of access, integration, quality, protection, participation, partnership, observation and evaluation, refugee education needs have been inadequately met, and Turkey hasn’t a system for refugee education. Conclusions and Recommendations: It has been suggested that Turkey develop a refugee education policy and use UNCHR standards for refugee education. For this, first, Turkey should create a systematic format for its refugee education program. MEB should develop a policy on refugee education. For example, MEB should use UNHCR’s criteria to measure access, integration, quality, protection, participation, partnership, observation and evaluation of refugee education. In addition, educational sciences should research refugee education from a holistic perspetive that includes relevant international law and policy fields. © 2016, Ani Publishing. All rights reserved.
