Article Citation - WoS: 0Citation - Scopus: 0Ahmed Anzavur: Soldier, Governor, and Rebel. a Reevaluation of a Late Ottoman Military Man(Oriental inst Czech Acad Sci, 2023) Yelbaşı, Caner; Department of History / Tarih BölümüFollowing the Russian conquest of the North Caucasus, many Muslims from the region were exiled to the Ottoman Empire from the 1860s onwards. They were settled in different parts of the empire from the Balkans to Anatolia to the Syria and Iraq vilayets. By following this policy, the Ottoman state ensured that many Circassians would become part of the Ottoman army, ruling elites, harems and agricultural workforce. Anzavur Ahmed's family was one of them. Although he did not graduate from military school, he participated in the army during the war in Libya (1911), the Balkan Wars (1912-1913), and the First World War (1914-1918). He was also appointed as the governor of Izmit (1920). Anzavur Ahmet is portrayed as a rebel by Turkish official historiography, but in reality, he was much more than that. He was an Ottoman Governor, and supported by Ottoman administrators such as Damad Ferid and Ali Kemal, who were against the Kuvayi Milliye because they believed that the empire would eventually emerge from the chaotic atmosphere of the post-First World War period and make an agreement with the British. This article argues that although Ahmed Anzavur has been labeled a rebel and a traitor according to the official historiography, it is difficult to use these labels given the circumstances of his time.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 0The Analysis of the Effects of Olfactive Stimulus in Learning in Context of Educational Technology(Elsevier Science Bv, 2013) Akpinar, Burhan; Özdaş, Faysal; Ozdas, Faysal; Yildirim, Bilal; Batdi, Veli; Department of Educational Sciences / Eğitim Bilimleri BölümüWhen the educational Technologies, which are used in the process of learning-teaching process, are associated with sensory organs, the least used one becomes the olfactive stimuli. Nowadays, because of being foreground of visual-audio Technologies, Positivism is based on vision and audition but it ignores the other senses. Although seeing and hearing play important roles, the ineffectiveness of other senses is delusion in this process. In this delusion the impact of visual-audio Technologic devices from telescope to television, internet, mobile phones is inevitable. However sensation and learning is wholistic and based on togetherness of five senses. Thus, with the delusion olfactive stimulus which is rejected from the educational field is effective on senses, attention, concentration and memory in learning. The purpose of this study, which is in form literature review, is to discuss the nature of olfactive stimulus the effectiveness in education, areas of usage in context of educational technology, to deduce and to make suggestions. Article Citation - Scopus: 0Can Serum Biomarker Values from Second-Trimester Aneuploidy Screening Predict the development of Retinopathy of Prematurity in Premature Infants?(Kare Publishing, 2024) Sabanci, S.; Savaş, Hasan Basri; Kucuk, M.F.; Savas, H.B.; Suren, E.; Erol, M.K.; Yavuz, A.; Sipahioglu, H.; Department of Basic Medical Sciences / Temel Tıp Bilimleri BölümüObjectives: This study aimed to evaluate serum biomarker values measured during second-trimester aneuploidy screening in terms of their predictive ability for the development of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in premature infants. Methods: This retrospective cohort study evaluated the data of 1985 idiopathic premature infants who underwent ROP screening from 2016 to 2022. The infants were divided into two groups according to the presence of ROP, and those with ROP were further evaluated in two subgroups based on the presence of proliferation. Comparisons were made concerning the serum multiple of the median values of unconjugated estriol (uE3), human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) among aneuploidy screening biomarkers. Results: While 1628 premature infants were in the non-ROP group, 357 were in the ROP group. Of the infants with ROP, 72 were in the proliferative ROP group and 285 in the non-proliferative ROP group. There was no significant difference in the multiple of the median values of the evaluated serum biomarkers (uE3, hCG, and AFP) between the ROP and non-ROP groups or between the proliferative ROP, non-proliferative ROP, and non-ROP groups. Conclusion: The multiple of the median values of second-trimester aneuploidy screening serum biomarkers were not able to predict the development of ROP in premature infants. This result may have been caused by the fact that the blood tests were taken only once and in the same weeks. © 2024 Kare Publishing. Indeed, it is in this period that, outside of residential habitations, communal buildings make their first appearance in the heart of Near Eastern villages. It is without doubt one of the first clear, historical attestations of social differentiation/organization in architecture. Truly, reflections on such constructions lead one to attribute to them adjectives aimed at encapsulating their supposed functions, such as "collective," "communal," "monumental," "public," "cultic," "storage structures," or even "megalithic" (Aurenche and Kozlowski 2000; Stordeur 2014; Watkins 2006; Goring-Morris and Belfer-Cohen 2014; Hauptmann 2012). The terminology here reflects considerably varying interpretations, often complementary and essentially derived from the architectural data, as the buildings reveal ground plans and internal structures that are quite distinct.Article Citation - WoS: 0Citation - Scopus: 0Community displacement challenges in educational tourism(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2025) Cizrelioğulları, Mehmet Necati; Department of Tourism Guidance / Turizm Rehberliği BölümüThis study investigates issues relating to community displacement of the indigenous residents of Famagusta resulting in an increased rate of relocation to the suburbs due to the sudden growth of educational tourism; thus, the main objective of the current study is to obtain perspectives of learners on primary motives. An in-depth interview of 28 Cypriots in Famagusta, through purposive sampling was used to gather data for the current research. Findings reveal that the increase in educational tourism in Famagusta caused the indigenous Cypriots to move into suburban neighbourhoods. Factors including urbanization issues, social issues, economic issues, cultural issues, and environmental issues were revealed to be the most challenging issues resulting in community displacement.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 5The Critique of Capitalism in the Light of Qur'anic Verses(Sage Publications Ltd, 2015) Eliacik, IhsanThis paper argues that the Qur'an must be understood as an anti-capitalist text. The Qur'an contains many verses that declare unequivocally the accumulation of wealth and monopoly ownership, either by the one person or one group, to be highly problematic ethically and socially. Qur'anic verses attend frequently to the issues of ownership and the accumulation of wealth. In the first years of the revelation and particularly before the Prophet's migration to Mecca, the Qur'an discusses frequently the issue of ownership. Before the migration, the Qur'an taught mainly about the exploitative nature of the existing economic system while, in the post-migration era, the Qur'an laid the foundation of a new system in which the accumulation of wealth and ownership monopoly are central causes of ethical and social degeneration. The Qur'an regards the redistribution of wealth to be both a religious duty and an ethical obligation.Book Part Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 2Decolonizing Architectural Education: Towards an Affective Pedagogy(Taylor and Francis, 2017) Tan, Pelin; Petrescu, D; Trogal, K; Department of Architecture / Mimarlık BölümüArticle Citation - WoS: 0Citation - Scopus: 0Determination of chemical composition and antioxidant, cytotoxic, antimicrobial, and enzyme inhibition activities of Rumex acetosella L. plant extract(Springer int Publ Ag, 2024) Aktepe, Necmettin; Keskin, Cumali; Baran, Ayşe; Baran, Mehmet Fırat; Atalar, Mehmet Nuri; Keskin, Cumali; Khalilov, Rovshan; Department of Medical Services and Techniques / Tıbbi Hizmetler ve Teknikleri Bölümü; Department of Nursing / Hemşirelik BölümüPurpose The phenolic composition, antioxidant, antimicrobial activity, enzyme inhibition activity, and cytotoxic activity potentials of the plant Rumex acetosella L. (R. acetosella) were examined in this study. Materials and Methods: The chemical composition of R. acetosella methanol extract was identified by the LC-MS/MS method. The antioxidant activity was tested using beta-carotene/linoleic acid, DPPH free radical scavenging, ABTS cation radical scavenging, CUPRAC reducing power, and metal chelating activity methods. The cytotoxic activity was determined by the MTT assay using human ovarian adenocarcinoma (Skov-3), glioblastoma (U87), human dermal fibroblasts (HDF), and human colorectal adenocarcinoma (CaCo-2) cell lines. The antimicrobial activity of methanolic extracts was tested on gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeuriginosa) and gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis) using the in vitro minimum inhibition concentration method (MIC). Enzyme inhibition activity of R. acetosella methanol extract was measured spectrophotometrically against acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) enzymes. Results: The findings showed that the major components of the methanol extract content were luteolin-7-O-glucoside (1.599 m/L), polydatin (91,024 m/L), and shikimic acid (0.773 m/L). It was determined that the extract and standard antioxidant (a-tocopherol) results in DPPH center dot, and ABTS center dot + tests performed to determine the antioxidant activity were close to each other, and this value was more effective than the standard antioxidant (alpha-tocopherol) in the CUPRAC test. These results suggested that the plant's antioxidant potential was higher when compared with reference antioxidant compounds. It was determined that the methanol extract of R. acetosella had a weaker effect on the growth of the tested microorganisms than the antibiotics used as standard. The activity of the GST and AChE enzymes was found to be severely inhibited by the methanol extract of R. acetosella. Conclusion: Based on these findings, R. acetosella L. is a medicinal and commercially beneficial plant that warrants further investigation.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 0Determination of Women Voting Behavior: a Machine Learning Approach in the Turkish Political Arena(Hipatia Editorial, 2020) Çaha, H.; Bayyurt, N.Justice and Development Party (AKP) has been the ruling and biggest party in Turkey (AKP) since it has been established in 2002 and Republican People’s Party (CHP) has been the main opposition party (CHP) since then. These two parties receive about 75% of all the votes. In Turkey half of the voters are females. In this study, the important attributes of women in party selection decisions are analyzed. To our knowledge, there is no such a study focusing on women’s party preferences in Turkey. Additionally, this is one of the very few studies in Turkey concerning voters’ party preferences. Therefore, this study aims to fill this gap in the literature. Center-periphery and social mobility theories are the two main theories explaining Turkish political life. The analyzed ideological, cultural, religious, social, economic and demographic characteristics of women supporters are selected according to these theories. Machine-learning techniques are employed as predictive tools. Results show that ideological attitudes like being leftist-rightist and religious values like headscarf, fasting in Ramadan, and praying are the most important effective attributes on party selection of women. However, socio-economic, cultural, educational and demographic atributes are not effective on party selection of women in Turkey. © 2020, Hipatia Editorial. While there were no statistically significant differences in Applications 1 and 3 between the LATCH scores of mothers with vaginal and cesarean deliveries, Application 2 produced a significant difference (p < .05). Conclusions: Delivery method influenced the breastfeeding behavior and had an impact particularly on initiation of breastfeeding in the first hour.Article Citation - WoS: 0El-hakîkatu’ş-şer‘iyye ve Cuzûruha’l-lugaviyye Bi Nazari’lmütekellimîn: Mefhûmu'l-îmâni Billâhi Nemûzecen(2018) Alkhattaf, Hasan; Department of Basic Islamic Sciences / Temel İslam Bilimleri BölümüŞeri hakikate farklı açılardan bakılmıştır. Article Citation - WoS: 0Citation - Scopus: 0Evidence From Turkish and Syrian People for the Measurement Invariance of the Cbbe Scale and Clues for the Distribution Strategies of the Brands(Kodisa Foundation, 2023) Kayaoğlu, Ahmet; Gülmez, Yavuz Selim; Kayaoglu, Ahmet; Gulmez, Yavuz Selim; Department of Management / İşletme BölümüPurpose: This research aims to test the measurement invariance of the consumer-based brand equity scale on Turkish and Syrian university students who live together but are from different cultural groups. Research design, data, and methodology: The consumer- based brand equity scale developed by Buil et al. (2008) is applied to the participants. In testing the consumer-based brand equity scale, the Netflix brand, which is considered well-known by both cultural groups, is preferred. It is thought that choosing an internationally recognized brand would facilitate the conduct of this research. Structural invariance and measurement invariance are tested using structural equation modeling. Results: The consumer-based brand equity scale has measurement invariance on Turkish and Syrian university students. Therefore, it has been revealed that the responses of participants from both cultures regarding the Netflix brand are comparable. Conclusion: The findings of the study provide clues for practitioners to review their distribution strategies. As a matter of fact, cultural studies conducted in different countries are common. Still, the originality of this study is ensured by the profile of participants who live in the same country but come from different countries.Article Citation - WoS: 5Citation - Scopus: 5Examining Student Opinions on Computer Use Based on the Learning Styles in Mathematics Education(Turkish Online Journal Educational Tech-tojet, 2012) Ozgen, Kemal; Bindak, Recep; Bindak, RecepThe purpose of this study is to identify the opinions of high school students, who have different learning styles, related to computer use in mathematics education. The use of EDs by parents of children with non-urgent conditions is associated with overcrowding, higher healthcare costs, lower quality of care, and longer waiting times. Research in this area has largely been conducted in high-income countries, with a dearth of work originating in middle and low-income regions. The aim of this study was to explore the reasons for parents attending EDs with their child for non-urgent conditions in Turkey.Method:Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 parents, 15 ED staff, and 10 General Practitioners (GPs) in 2 regions of Turkey between March and May 2017. Data were analyzed using the principles of grounded theory. Results:The findings were classified into 5 core categories: (1) parents' feelings, knowledge, and perceived inability to provide self-care; (2) perceived limitations of healthcare services, system, and staff; (3) parents' preferences for hospital and ED services; (4) adverse impact on ED services; and (5) perceived needs for care. Conclusion:This is the first study conducted in a middle-income country regarding parental reasons for using the ED for nonurgent conditions. Greater efforts must be made to reduce unnecessary visits to the ED to better meet service user needs and to increase the satisfaction of both parents and healthcare staff. The findings of this study may inform healthcare providers, policymakers, healthcare staff, and researchers to design interventions in order to mitigate overcrowding in the ED.Article Citation - WoS: 12Citation - Scopus: 17Gastronomy Tourism Through Tea and Coffee: Travellers' Museum Experience(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2021) Seyitoglu, Faruk; Seyitoğlu, Faruk; Alphan, Eda; Department of Tourism Guidance / Turizm Rehberliği BölümüPurpose - The main aim of the present research is to investigate the tea and coffee experience of travellers around the world and clutch the dimensions of tea and coffee museum experience.
