Domestik yaşam: Bir konut kuramı için altlık

Abstract

Since the early 1930s, when housing studies began in the field of architecture, the discussion has been revolving around certain dualities -such as traditional house/modern house - and generalizations - such as Turkish house/Anatolian house. The idea of 'eternality' excludes practices of everyday life and their transformation has since dominated the literature. Functional and analytical language in the housing studies increased the quality and quantity of discussions, however, defined as 'nest' and 'pri- vate space'; the house became idealized and closed day by day. 'The lost home' rhetoric that has fed nostalgia in architecture has also increased the barriers towards the understanding of the house idea. As in the past, it is not known today how ordinary people use their homes, how their practices are diversified, and how their relations are maintained. The aim of this dissertation is thus to problematize the old theoretical approaches that are no longer valid and to develop a new conceptual approach to housing research. The dissertation opens up the question of 'how can we understand the house?' to a discussion with a 'narrative montage' consisting of writer's own domestic life. Approaching the subject through the unwritten history of houses, domesticities, and domestic households; it addresses the perspective of overlooked ordinaries; or those that have been compressed in a total 'meta' narrative. It argues that the house is nothing than domestic life and sociality combined; and reveals social relations, daily actions, and historical dynamics are produced by clashing, challenging and changing with the house. It criticizes the traditional discourses of the house and the holistic theory proposals alike and further demonstrates that it is not possible to expect a wholistic theory that will reveal the eternal manifestations of domestic life; consequently forming the basis for a housing theory that focuses on the diversity of the actions of the subjects and the complexity of relations. Finally, the dissertation emphasizes the importance of conducting residential research on an interdisciplinary, flexible, and autonomous ground.

Konut, mimarlık alanında çalışılmaya başlandığı 1930‟lardan günümüze, geleneksel konut/modern konut gibi ikilikler ve Türk evi/Anadolu evi gibi genellemeler etrafında çözümlenmiş; gündelik yaşamı ve değişimi dışlayan ezeli ve ebedi bir konut fikri literatüre hakim olmuştur. Güncel konut çalışmalarındaki işlevsel ve analizci dil, nitelik/nicelik tartışmalarını yükseltmiş; ev, 'yuva' ve 'özel alan' gibi tanımlamalarla gittikçe kapatılarak idealleştirilmiştir. 'Yitirilmiş ev' söylemleri mimarlıkta nostalji damarını beslerken, evin anlaşılmasının önündeki engelleri de çoğaltmıştır. Geçmişte olduğu gibi günümüzde de sıradan insanın konutunu nasıl kullandığı, pratiklerinin nasıl çeşitlendiği, domestik ilişkilerin ne şekilde sürdürüldüğü bilinmemektedir. Bu tez çalışmasının amacı, artık kullanılamaz durumdaki eski kavramsal yaklaşımları sorunsallaştırmak, konut araştırmalarına dair yeni bir kavramsal yaklaşım geliştirmektir. Bu tez çalışması 'evi nasıl anlayabiliriz?' sorusunu tez yazarının kendi domestik yaşamından oluşan bir anlatı metniyle tartışmaya açar. Tarihi yazılmamış evselliklerin, sıradan ev sakinlerinin ve topluca bir 'meta' anlatıya sıkıştırılmış olanların tarafından meseleye yaklaşır. Konutun, domestik yaşamdan ve toplumsallıktan başka bir şey olmadığını; toplumsal ilişkilerin, gündelik eylemlerin ve tarihsel dinamiklerin konutla çatışarak, didişerek ve değişimle üretildiğini ortaya koyar. Konuta dair geleneksel söylemleri de bütüncül teori önerilerini de eleştirir. Domestik yaşamın sonsuz tezahürlerini ortaya koyacak bir teori beklentisinin mümkün olmadığına işaret ederken; öznelerin eylemlerinin çeşitliliğine ve ilişkilerin karmaşıklığına odaklanan bir konut kuramı için altlık oluşturur. Konut araştırmalarının interdisipliner, esnek ve özerk bir zeminde yürütülmesinin önemini vurgular.
