Abstract
Oral culture plays a central role in the formation of social memory and the intergenerational transmission of cultural knowledge. In societies where writing was not sufficiently developed, cultural heritage was largely transmitted through oral means, rendering oral culture one of the fundamental sources of written culture. This thesis examines the oral culture of the Jews of Kurdistan within its historical and cultural context and aims to analyze the effects of the Mesopotamian exile on this cultural tradition. The study is based on the assumption that the approximately 2,700-year residence of the Jews of Kurdistan in the Mesopotamian region resulted in an intensive process of cultural interaction with local communities. This interaction, shaped within the framework of a host–guest relationship, led to the mutual transmission and transformation of elements of oral culture. Upon their return to their homeland, the Jewish communities are observed to have carried with them numerous elements of the oral cultures of the societies with which they had been in contact. In this thesis, the impact of the Mesopotamian exile on the oral culture of the Jews of Kurdistan is identified and analyzed through examples of oral literature and folkloric materials. Within the methodological framework of the study, relevant written sources were surveyed, appropriate examples were selected in accordance with academic criteria, and these materials were examined using scientific analytical methods. The findings demonstrate that the Mesopotamian exile had a significant influence on the oral culture of the Jews of Kurdistan, and that this influence can be clearly observed in numerous folkloric elements.
