Abstract

ABSTRACTWhile researching the history, architecture of a city, the etymology of the names of the city is one of the first researches. Changes in the names of the city contain many facts related to the sociological, economic and architectural structure of the city. Therefore, the etymology of city names is important in historical and architectural research for the city. It is seen that these names are sometimes the best descriptors of the city and give important information about the history of the city.As a result of the researches, these names are mostly hidden in the legends, etc., which are a part of oral culture. Legends reflect and shape the oral culture of the city. It is known that written culture is often not sufficient and verbal culture is used to reach a clearer information in researches about the city.In this context, in the researches on Kızıltepe, a district of Mardin, it is seen that the influence of the legends told as a part of the oral culture is intense in reaching information about the etymology of the names of the city. In the study, some of the names of Kızıltepe, which have been used till today, have been handled etymologically within the framework of the sample.
