Klasik Dönemde Süryani Kimliği (XII. ve XIII. yy.)

Abstract

Bu tez, klasik dönemde oldukça karmaşık bir yapıya sahip olan Süryani kimliği konusunu, Süryanilerin kendi kalemlerinden üretilen eserler özelinde, kendilerini nasıl tanımladıklarını incelenmeyi amaç edinmiştir. Süryani yazarlarının tüm eserlerini incelemek bu çalışma kapsamında mümkün olmadığı için, bu sebeple XII. ve XIII. yüzyıl Süryani yazın geleneğinin altın çağını yaşadığı son dönemin önemli temsilcilerinin belirli eserleri tercih edilmiştir. Bu eserlerin seçilme amacı, söz konusu Süryani müelliflerin klasik dönemin son temsilcileri olmalarının yanı sıra kendilerinden önce yazan ruhbanlardan iktibas yapmak suretiyle metinlerini inşa etmeleri olmuştur. Bu kronikler sayesinde erken dönem yazan ruhban sınıfının görüşlerine, dönemin siyasi, dini ve sosyal yaşamına dair birçok bilgi edinilmektedir. Kronik yazarları çoğu zaman yaratılıştan başlattıkları anlatılarını, iktibaslar yapmak suretiyle çağdaşı oldukları döneme kadar getirip sonlandırmıştır. Tezin odak noktasını Mihayel Rabo'nun Maḵthḇonut Zaḇne Kroniği, 1234 Süryani Anonim Kroniği ve Bar Ebroyo'nun Maḵthḇonut Zaḇne Kroniği teşkil etmiştir. Bu kronikler kapsamında tarihsel süreçte şekillenen Süryani 'kim'lik algısının etno-dinsel bağlamda inşa edilmesi incelenmiştir. Süryani 'kim'liği hakkında Türkiye'de ilk defa yapılan bu çalışmanın akademik literatüre katkı sunması hedeflenmektedir.

This thesis aims to examine the complex nature of Syriac identity in the classical period, specifically through the works produced by Syriac writers themselves, and to examine how they defined themselves. Since it is not possible to examine all the works of Syriac writers within the scope of this study, specific works by prominent representatives of the late period, the golden age of the Syriac literary tradition of the 12th and 13th centuries, have been selected. The selection of these works was motivated by the fact that these Syriac authors were the last representatives of the classical period and constructed their texts by quoting from clergy who wrote before them. Through these chronicles, we gain a wealth of information about the views of the early clergy and the political, religious, and social life of the period. Chroniclers often began their narratives with the origins of creation and, through quotations, extended them to their contemporary period, concluding their narratives. The focus of this thesis is on Mihayel Rabo's Maḵthḇonut Zaḇne Chronicle, the 1234 Syriac Anonymous Chronicle, and Bar Ebroyo's Maḵthḇonut Zaḇne Chronicle. These chronicles examine the ethno-religious construction of the Syriac 'identity' as it has shaped the historical process. This study, the first of its kind in Turkey, aims to contribute to the academic literature on Syriac 'identity.'
