Abstract
This study was conducted under field conditions in Çanakkale during the 2023 growing season to evaluate the combined effects of mineral fertilizers and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) on growth, yield, and essential oil composition of basil (Ocimum basilicum L.). The experiment was established in a randomized complete block design with three replications, and a total of seven treatments were evaluated. The results indicated that the majority of mineral fertilizer applications and microbial fertilizer formulations positively affected plant height, number of branches, stem diameter, leaf characteristics, fresh and dry herbage yield, as well as essential oil content and yield. In particular, some bacterial formulations exhibited performance comparable to or higher than mineral fertilizer applications. GC–MS analyses identified a total of 30 compounds representing the essential oil composition. The main constituents were determined as estragole (44.00–59.73%), 1,8-cineole (10.92–15.65%), methyleugenol (0.12–10.46%), and β-pinene (1.64–3.79%). These findings indicate that the studied basil material belongs to the estragole chemotype. In conclusion, PGPR-based microbial applications may reduce mineral fertilizer requirements, enhance essential oil yield, and serve as a sustainable biological fertilizer alternative in basil cultivation.
