Abstract
On May 1st 2012, a group of young people who identified themselves as Anti-capitalist Muslims attended the May 1st march. This was the first occasion in the history of Turkey that a pro-Islamic group marched along with the labor movement. The group also established “Associations for Anti-capitalist Struggle” in different cities of Turkey. While the capitalist economic system is at the center of their criticism, they also argue against any kind of Islamic understanding that is compatible with capitalism and other kinds of exploitative systems. In this context, they criticize the current pro-Islamic government on the ground that they use Islam to legitimize their neoliberal economic program. This article aims to analyze the “Anti-capitalist Muslims” movement with their political programs, the schools and traditions they follow both in Turkey and within the larger Islamic world and the possible effects they may have in Turkey.
