Abstract
As organizational communication processes evolve and working environments become increasingly dynamic, interactions among employees extend beyond formal channels to include informal communication networks. Within this theoretical framework, organizational gossip emerges as a salient social mechanism that facilitates the dissemination of information and shapes interpersonal relationships in the workplace. While gossip can serve to strengthen social bonds among employees, its negative content has the potential to undermine trust and disrupt the organizational climate. Concurrently, organizational alienation—defined as employees' psychological detachment from their work and organization—persists as a salient issue, impeding motivation and performance. A paucity of participation in decision-making processes, coupled with a perception of work as devoid of purpose, stands as a principal catalyst in the exacerbation of alienation. The present study is predicated on the aforementioned perspective, with the objective being to empirically investigate the impact of organizational gossip on organizational alienation. The study was conducted with a sample of 334 employees working in the education and healthcare sectors across Türkiye. A quantitative research design was employed, and data were collected through a structured survey. The measurement instruments employed in this study included a Personal Information Form, the Organizational Gossip Scale, and the Organizational Alienation Scale. The data were then subjected to a rigorous analytical process that entailed frequency analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, and regression analysis. The findings indicate that organizational gossip has a positive and statistically significant effect on organizational alienation. The findings of this study offer empirical evidence that informal communication dynamics, particularly gossip, may function as a critical antecedent of alienation in organizational settings. Accordingly, the study makes a significant contribution to the extant literature by shedding light on the less savory aspects of informal communication and its repercussions for employee attitudes and organizational outcomes.
