Abstract

K & acirc;tibÇelebi (1609-1657) was one ofthe leading intellectuals ofthe 17th-century Ottoman Empire, shapingsocial and cultural life through his works. His surviving manuscripts reveal a distinctive style and disciplined method of study. Among these features are the'minhü' notes he inserted in the margins, which reflect both his working habits and his scientific attitude. The Cih & acirc;nnüm & acirc; manuscript preserved in his own handwriting (TSMK Revan 1624) offers valuable insight into the purpose and function of these notes. Since this copy remained unfinished due to his death, it also provides access to the author's intellectual background and long-term plans. This study examines the use and functionality ofthe 'minhü' information in the draft of Cih & acirc;nnüm & acirc;, highlighting their role in clarifying concepts, preventing confusion, and supplementing the main text. The article also presents transcriptions ofthese notes forthe first time, offeringthem as a resource for researchers. For comparison, the Müteferrika edition of Cih & acirc;nnüm & acirc; is used as a reference point. Because most ofthe 'minhü' material was excluded from the printed text, the study addresses the resulting gaps and misunderstandings in interpretation. Ultimately, the research demonstrates how these marginal notes, though external to the main text, function as essential tools for understanding both Cih & acirc;nnüm & acirc; and the intellectual world of K & acirc;tibÇelebi.
