İngilizce Öğretmenlerinin Derslerinde Kullandıkları Öğretim Yöntem, Teknik ve Değerlendirme Etkinlikleri: Problemler ve Çözüm Önerileri
Abstract
Teacher-centered methods have been evolving toward learner-centered approaches, where the needs and development of the individual are increasingly prioritized. Contemporary methods, which view language as a tool for communication, emphasize that language should be treated as a whole rather than just focusing on reading and writing, necessitating the development of all four basic language skills. The methods used in foreign language teaching are characterized as instruments that enable the implementation of the theoretical framework of language learning. The historical trajectory of English learning and teaching has led to the emergence of numerous methods and techniques. 21st-century classrooms aim for language acquisition through meaningful learning in real-life contexts, placing a strong emphasis on communicative models. This study examines the teaching methods, techniques, and assessment activities used by English teachers in their lessons, alongside the challenges they face during the instructional process and the solutions they propose, based on their own perspectives. Conducted as a qualitative study, the data were collected through interview forms administered to 84 English teachers working in the province of Adana during the 2025-2026 academic year and analyzed using the descriptive analysis method. The interview form revealed teacher opinions regarding the four basic language skills, vocabulary teaching, assessment practices, and technology-assisted language instruction. By examining teachers' attitudes and experiences concerning their preferred classroom practices through a holistic lens, the study aimed to uncover current trends and obstacles in English language teaching. The research results clearly indicate that English teachers have adopted learner-centered approaches. The primary reason for this shift is that such approaches provide students with the opportunity to acquire the four fundamental language skills. Similarly, it was found that teachers frequently prefer communicative activities that increase classroom interaction and materials that offer meaningful learning experiences. English teachers support contemporary methods and techniques with various materials and activities. Today, it is observed that techniques aligned with learner-based approaches—primarily Communicative Language Teaching—are preferred and blended with other modern methods in the learning process. The findings demonstrate that teaching methods, techniques, and technology must be handled as an integrated whole in English language teaching. However, it was also revealed that a full transition to contemporary approaches is hindered by problems encountered in technology integration and the assessment process. This study, centered on teacher opinions, was developed with the primary goal of amplifying the participants' voices and provides a comprehensive evaluation of the field.
