The Non-Muslims of Antioch in the 18th Century (According to the Shari’a Registers)

Abstract

This study, entitled Non-Muslims in Antioch in the Eighteenth Century (According to Sharia Court Records), examines the non-Muslims living in the city of Antioch, an important trading centre during the classical period of the Ottoman Empire. In this context, non-Muslims residing in the city, including Armenians, Greeks and Jews, as well as those arriving from within and outside Ottoman territories for commercial purposes, were also addressed. The comprehensive structure of the thesis consists of four sections, excluding the introduction. The introduction section covers the purpose of the study, the sources used, the research method, and the name and historical development of the city of Antioch. The first section provides information about the ethnic composition, settlements and population distribution of non-Muslims living in Antioch. The second section touches upon topics such as the dwellings, household items, clothing, family life, social relationships and crimes committed by the non-Muslims of Antioch. In the third chapter, religious beliefs, places of worship, clergy, and practices of changing religion are examined. The fourth chapter examines the economic relations of non-Muslims, including their occupations, economic activities, roles in domestic and foreign trade, partnerships with Muslims, debt relations, property transactions, and tax records. This study is an independent social history research project that aims to shed light on the socio-economic structure of the Ottoman Empire in general and Antioch in particular within the aforementioned context, endeavouring to address the city's non-Muslim population in all its dimensions. Although the main source of the study is the Sharia Registers, various archival documents have also been utilised. In addition to data obtained from archival documents, travelogues, copyrighted works written about Antioch and non-Muslims, foreign sources, articles, theses, papers and internet sources were used.

XVIII. Yüzyılda Antakya Gayrimüslimleri (Şer'iyye Sicillerine Göre) adlı bu çalışmada, Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'nun klasik döneminde önemli bir ticaret merkezi olan Antakya şehrinde yaşayan Gayrimüslimler incelenmektedir. Bu kapsamda, şehir sakini olan Ermeni, Rum ve Yahudilerin yanı sıra ticari amaçlarla Osmanlı toprakları dahilinden ve haricinden gelen Gayrimüslimler de ele alınmıştır. Tezin kapsamlı yapısı, giriş kısmı hariç dört bölümden oluşmaktadır. Giriş bölümünde, konunun amacı, kullanılan kaynaklar, araştırma yöntemi ile Antakya şehrinin adı ve tarihsel gelişimi ele alınmıştır. Birinci bölümde, Antakya'da yaşayan Gayrimüslimlerin etnik yapısı, yerleşim yerleri ve nüfus dağılımları hakkında bilgi verilmiştir. İkinci bölümde, Antakya Gayrimüslimlerinin meskenleri, ev eşyaları, giyim-kuşamları, aile hayatları, sosyal ilişkileri ve işledikleri suçlar gibi konulara değinilmiştir. Üçüncü bölümde, dinî inançları, ibadethaneleri, din adamları ve din değiştirme pratikleri incelenmiştir. Dördüncü bölümde ise Gayrimüslimlerin meslekleri, ekonomik faaliyetleri, iç ve dış ticaretteki rolleri, Müslümanlarla kurdukları ortaklıklar, borç ilişkileri, mülk alım-satımları ve vergi kayıtları gibi iktisadî ilişkileri ortaya konulmuştur. Bu çalışma söz konusu bağlam çerçevesinde, genelde Osmanlı Devleti'nin özelde ise Antakya'nın sosyo-ekonomik yapısını aydınlatmayı amaçlayan, şehrin Gayrimüslim nüfusunu tüm boyutlarıyla ele almaya gayret eden müstakil bir sosyal tarih araştırmasıdır. Çalışmanın ana kaynağı Şer'iyye Sicilleri olmakla birlikte muhtelif arşiv vesikalarından da yararlanılmıştır. Arşiv dökümanlarından elde edilen verilere ek olarak, seyahatnameler, Antakya ve Gayrimüslimler hakkında yazılmış telif eserler, yabancı kaynaklar, makaleler, tezler, bildiriler ve internet kaynakları kullanılmıştır.
