Abstract
The purpose of this study is to determine the level of effect of high
school students’ attitudes on their absence and school success and to find out whether
the attitudes of high school students towards school change according to personal values
of them or not. The data of this study is collected through survey technique from
quantitative methods. The study group is consisted of 10th grade students in 10
government high schools located in Viranşehir, the town of Şanlıurfa city, in academic
years of 2011-2012 spring term. In the selection of the study group, stratified sampling
method was used and at least 25 percent of the students in 10th grade in each school
filled the scales. Test techniques such as percent, standard deviation, t-Test, variance
(ANOVA) analysis and Tukey-HSD were used. ‘’Attitudes towards school scale’’ with
21 items developed by Adıgüzel (2012) was used to collect data for this study. The
scale is composed of 4 negative and 17 positive attitude items under 4 sub dimensions
and was applied to 357 students: 201 boys, 156 girls. SPSS 16.0 was used for the
statistical analysis. According to results obtained through this study, female students’
attitudes towards school are found to be significantly more positive than male students.
Students’ attitudes towards school show significant difference compared to their
absence levels. Students with lower level of absenteeism are found to have more
positive attitudes to school compared to students with more level of absenteeism.
However, students’ attitudes towards school do not show any significant difference
compared to their marks and school success level.
