Abstract
This article tries to show how marine and terrestrial practices of the Ottoman Empire gained speed and how the struggle on land and sea on a regional level acquired a global significance when a particular place – Gallipoli – was conquered and when one particular man – Barbaros Hayreddin Pasha – was employed by the state. Following this overall thesis the article draws attention to the use of Gallipoli as a central base by the Ottoman fleet over centuries due to its geo-strategic qualities. This shows how important the place was in the military, political and administrative policies of the state. Likewise, the employment of Barbaros by the Ottoman Empire is essential to show that victories, the expanded borders and the overlordship in a region (North Africa and the Mediterranean) all depend on a qualified man. The province of “Cezâyir-i Bahri Sef îd” as a well-chosen place and the “captain of the sea” Barbarossa Khar al-Din Pasha as a well-chosen person who made this place meaningful would become the two elements that secured the overlordship of the Ottoman state in the Mediterranean. Thanks to these choices, success became inevitable. All the historical data in this article will be used with specific reference to space and human.
