Zoos as a Simulation Space: A Critical Approach with the Theories of Baudrillard and Uexkull

Abstract

This study examines zoos as one of modernity's ways of representing nature. Zoos are discussed within the framework of Baudrillard's simulation theory and Uexküll's concept of the umwelt. The primary argument of the article is that zoos, while bringing nature and animals into urban spaces, transform them into simulations, detaching animals from their subjectivity and representing them as objects of gaze and instruments of spectacle. Zoos function as remodeled versions of nature and animals. The concept of the umwelt is used in this study to emphasize that each animal exists in its own world of perception and influence, but in zoos, animal subjects are abducted from their own environmental world. Methodically, the study employs a literature review and interprets existing knowledge in the field. The results demonstrate that zoos reproduce animals at the level hyperreality. It also emphasizes that in zoos animal subjectivity is replaced by objectification as part of an anthropocentric perception. While maintaining a critical approach toward anthropocentrism the study offers interpretations of the human-animal relationship through zoos within the context of posthumanist ethics.

Bu çalışmada hayvanat bahçeleri, modernitenin doğayı temsil etme biçimlerinden biri olarak ele alınır. Baudrillard’ın simülasyon kuramı ile Uexküll’ün umwelt kavramı çerçevesinde hayvanat bahçeleri tartışılır. Makalenin temel iddiası, hayvanat bahçelerinin doğayı ve hayvanları kent mekânlarına taşırken onları birer simülasyona dönüştürdüğü ve hayvanları öznelliklerinden kopartarak bir seyir nesnesi ve gösteri aracı olarak temsil ettiğidir. Hayvanat bahçeleri, doğanın ve hayvanların yeniden modellenmiş bir hâli gibidir. Umwelt kavramı ise bu çalışmada, her hayvanın kendi algı ve etki dünyasında var olduğunu ancak hayvanat bahçesinde hayvan öznelerin kendi umwelt’lerinden kaçırılmış olduklarını vurgulamak üzere kullanılır. Yöntem olarak çalışmada literatür değerlendirmesi yapılmış ve alandaki bilgi yorumlanmıştır. Sonuçlar, hayvanat bahçelerinin doğayı hipergerçeklik düzeyde yeniden ürettiğini gösterir. Ayrıca hayvanat bahçelerinde hayvan özneliklerinin yerini antroposentrik bir algının parçası olarak nesneleşmeye bıraktığı vurgulanır. Çalışmada insan merkezciliğe eleştirel bir yaklaşım sergilenirken posthümanist etik bağlamda insan-hayvan ilişkisine hayvanat bahçeleri üzerinden yorumlamalar getirilir.
