Abstract
This study examines the reciprocal relationship between memory and space through the case of Kale Neighborhood in the city of Muş. The main problem of the research is to explore how individual and collective memory are produced, transformed, and reconstructed over time through spatial practices and everyday life experiences. Memory is approached not merely as an act of recalling the past, but as a dynamic process that is continuously reconstituted within social relations, spatial arrangements, and historical ruptures. The theoretical framework of the study is based on Maurice Halbwachs' conceptualization of collective memory, Pierre Nora's notion of places of memory, and discussions on practices of remembering. This framework enables an analysis of the relationship between memory and space within its historical, social, and cultural dimensions. Qualitative research methods were employed in the study. Within the scope of the fieldwork conducted in Kale Neighborhood, semi-structured interviews, oral history narratives, spatial observations, and archival materials were examined together. Through the individual narratives of neighborhood users, everyday life practices, senses of spatial belonging, and modes of remembering were analyzed. These narratives demonstrate how individual memory intertwines with collective memory and gains meaning through space. The findings reveal those spatial transformations in Kale Neighborhood-such as changes in the built environment, urban interventions, and processes of displacement-transform not only the physical environment but also the collective memory of the neighborhood. While the weakening of traditional ways of life and everyday encounters leads to ruptures in memory transmission, certain places and narratives continue to exist as points of resistance that sustain memory. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that space plays a central role as both a carrier and producer of memory and emphasizes that urban regeneration processes should be evaluated not only in physical terms but also in relation to their social and memory impacts. By focusing on Kale Neighborhood, this analysis aims to make the memory-space relationship visible at the local scale and to contribute to collective memory studies from a space-based perspective.
