Abstract
Aim: This study aimed to determine the knowledge levels of patients regarding the harmful effects of radiation and their attitudes toward radiation, and to examine the relationship between these two variables. Materials and Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 370 patients who received services in the radiology unit of Şırnak Cizre Dr. Selahattin Cizrelioğlu State Hospital between December 25, 2024, and March 25, 2025. Data were collected using the Patient Information Form, the Radiation Knowledge Level Form, and the Radiation Attitude Scale. Descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests were used in data analysis, and all analyses were performed using SPSS 26.0. Results: The mean age of the participants was 31,47±9,35 years. It was found that although most patients were aware that radiation could be harmful, they had difficulty distinguishing which imaging methods involve radiation, and their overall knowledge level was limited. Attitudes toward radiation were found to differ significantly according to certain sociodemographic variables, particularly education level and income status. Additionally, a statistically significant relationship was found between patients' knowledge levels and their attitudes toward radiation (p<0,05). Conclusion: The findings indicate that although patients have a certain level of awareness regarding the harmful effects of radiation, there are notable gaps in their knowledge, particularly concerning biological effects and imaging methods. Therefore, it is recommended to improve patient education processes and to develop awareness-raising programs aimed at increasing knowledge about the potential risks of radiation.
