Abstract
Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun son döneminde misyonerlik faaliyetlerinin büyük bir bölümü Amerikan Board ve Genç Hristiyan Birliği Örgütü tarafından yapılmaktaydı. Yapılan bu çalışmanın amacı, Osmanlı İmparatorluğunun son döneminde misyonerlik faaliyetleri ve spor arasındaki ilişkiyi ortaya koymaktır. Yapılan bu çalışmada, tarama yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda, farklı kütüphanelerden ve elektronik ortamda konuyla ilgili Türkçe ve İngilizce olarak yazılmış; dergi, kitap ve tezlere ulaşılmış, konuyla ilişkisi olanlar seçilerek çalışmada kullanılmıştır. Çalışmanın sonunda, Osmanlı topraklarında faaliyet gösteren Amerikan Board ve Genç Hristiyan birliği örgütleri misyonerlik faaliyetleri için sporu bir araç olarak gördüğü, spor sayesinde birçok Müslümanın ilgisini çektiği ve birçok Müslümana Protestanlığı benimsettiği anlaşılmıştır.
In the last period of the Ottoman Empire, most of the missionary activities were carried out by two organizations, namely the American Board and the Young Men’s Christian Association. The present study aims to reveal the relationship between missionary activities and sports in the last period of the Ottoman Empire. As part of the research, a great deal of literature items were scanned. Thus, through browsing relevant journals, books and thesis found in various libraries and electronic media the most relevant works were selected and used in the study. It is concluded from the study that both organizations in question exploited sports for missionary activities in the Ottoman territories. It is also understood that the both attracted the attention of Muslims by means of sports and then protestantised many of them.
