The Kantian Origins of Aesthetic Judgment in the Context of Bourdieu’s Social Critique

Abstract

Bu tez, estetik yargı sorununu estetik kuram çerçevesinde ele alan bir inceleme sunmaktadır. Çalışma, estetik yargının yalnızca bireysel beğeniye indirgenerek ya da bütünüyle toplumsal belirlenimlere bağlanarak açıklanamayacağı kabulü doğrultusunda şekillenmiştir. Bu nedenle tez, estetik yargının normatif özellikleri ile toplumsal bağlamdaki işleyiş biçimlerini ayrı çözümleme düzlemleri olarak ele almaktadır. Çalışmada Kant ve Bourdieu'nün, estetik yargıya ilişkin farklı sorular etrafında geliştirilen iki ayrı kuramsal yaklaşım olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Kant'ın estetik kuramı, estetik yargının normatif geçerlilik iddiasını ve bu yargının özgül yapısını tartışma konusu haline getirirken; Bourdieu'nün çözümlemeleri, estetik yargıların toplumsal alandaki tanınma, dolaşım ve meşrulaşma süreçlerine odaklanmaktadır. Bu yaklaşımlar, birbirlerinin yerine geçen ya da birbirini temellendiren kuramlar olarak değil, estetik yargının farklı yönlerini ele alan ayrı okuma biçimleri olarak ele alınmıştır. Tezde kullanılan birincil ve ikincil sahne ayrımı, bu iki okuma biçimini farklı düzlemlerde konumlandırmayı amaçlayan sınırlı bir kavramsal çerçeve niteliğindedir. Birincil sahne, estetik yargının normatif boyutuna ilişkin çözümlemelerin yürütüldüğü düzlemi; ikincil sahne ise estetik yargıların toplumsal bağlamda ele alındığı inceleme düzlemini ifade etmektedir. Bu ayrım, kuramsal bir bütünlük inşa etmeyi ya da yeni bir kuram ortaya koymayı amaçlamamaktadır. Sonuç olarak bu çalışma, estetik yargının normatif ve toplumsal boyutlarını iki ayrı çözümleme düzeyinde ele almaktadır.This thesis presents an examination of the problem of aesthetic judgment within the framework of aesthetic theory. The study is structured around the premise that aesthetic judgment cannot be explained solely by individual taste or entirely by social determinations. Therefore, the thesis treats the normative characteristics of aesthetic judgment and its function within a social context as separate levels of analysis. In this study, Kant and Bourdieu's aesthetic teories are considered as two distinct theoretical approaches developed around different questions concerning aesthetic judgment. Kant's aesthetic theory discusses the normative validity claim of aesthetic judgment and its specific structure, while Bourdieu's analyses focus on the processes of recognition, circulation, and legitimation of aesthetic judgments in the social sphere. These approaches are not treated as theories that replace or underpin each other, but rather as distinct ways of reading aesthetic judgment that address different aspects of it. The distinction between primary and secondary scenes used in this thesis is a limited conceptual framework aimed at positioning these two modes of reading on different levels. The primary scene represents the level at which analyses concerning the normative dimension of aesthetic judgment are conducted; the secondary scene represents the level of examination where aesthetic judgments are considered within their social context. This distinction does not aim to construct a theoretical whole or to introduce a new theory. Consequently, this study addresses the normative and social dimensions of aesthetic judgment at two separate levels of analysis.
