Article Citation - WoS: 26Citation - Scopus: 281-(2-Hydroxyethyl)-2-imidazolidinone as corrosion inhibitor of mild steel in 0.5 M HCl solution: thermodynamic, electrochemical and theoretical studies(Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology, 2019) Keleşoğlu, Ayşen; Yıldız, Reşit; Dehri, İlyasThe inhibition effect of 1-(2-Hydroxyethyl)-2-imidazolidinone (2-HEI) on mild steel (MS) corrosion in 0.5M HCl solution was investigated at different inhibitor concentration and temperature by electrochemical experiments, such as linear polarization resistance (LPR), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization and quantum chemical calculations. The inhibitor adsorption process on mild steel in 0.5M HCl system was studied at different temperatures (20 C–50 C). Furthermore, the surface morphology of MS was also investigated with SEM in the absence and the presence of inhibitor. The adsorption of 1-(2-Hydroxyethyl)-2-imidazolidinone on MS surface is an exothermic process and this process obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The Quantum chemical findings are good agreed with the empirical data.Article Citation - WoS: 59Citation - Scopus: 63Adsorption and inhibition effect of 2,4-diamino-6-hydroxypyrimidine for mild steel corrosion in HCl medium: experimental and theoretical investigation(SPRINGER HEIDELBERG, 2019) Yildiz, Resit2,4-Diamino-6-hydroxypyrimidine (2D6H) was examined as corrosion inhibitor of mild steel (MS) in 0.1M HCl using potentiodynamic measurements, linear polarization resistance (LPR), scanning electron microscopy, electrochemical experiments, and quantum chemical calculations. All measurements show that the corrosion inhibition effectiveness is forthright compared to the concentration of 2D6H ranging from 0.5 to 10.0mM. Adsorption of 2D6H on the MS surface in the presence of HCl is determined to obey Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The electronic features elucidated by quantum chemical calculations were associated with the experimental inhibition productivities. The mechanism of inhibition was revealed by E-pzc measurements.Article Citation - WoS: 6Citation - Scopus: 7Antioxidant, Ache Inhibitory, and Anticancer Effects of Verbascum Thapsus Extract(CMB Assoc, 2023) Zhang, Na; Baran, Ayse; Valioglu, Ferzane; Teng, Lei; Atalar, Mehmet Nuri; Keskin, Cumali; Beilerli, AferinVerbascum thapsus (Mullein) is a medicinal plant used in folk medicine to treat various ailments. For this study, the biological functions of Verbascum thapsus (VT) methanol extract were determined in vitro. The plant's methanol extract was created through the maceration process. The phytochemical composition of plant extracts was investigated using liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry. The antioxidant capacity of the extract was determined using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazil (DPPH radical) and 2,2-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS radical). Cell lines Caco-2 (human colorectal adenocarcinoma cells), LNCaP (Lymph Node Carcinoma of Prostate), and HEK293 (Human embryonic kidney 293 cells) were used to model colon, prostate, and non-cancerous cells. The cytotoxic activity of the plant extract on the proliferation of these cells was determined by the MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide, a tetrazole) assay protocol. VT extract showed moderate DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities at 30 mg/ml concentration. With this, VT extract was determined to inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme and had strong cytotoxic activity on cancerous cell lines. In addition, our findings clearly showed that the plant extract had greater cytotoxic activity on the viability of cancerous cells compared to non-cancerous (Human embryonic kidney cells; HEK293) cells. The current findings showed that V. thapsus might be a promising anti-cancer medication candidate for the treatment of human colorectal adenocarcinoma and colon cancer, as well as a good source antioxidans. We aimed to determine the degree of kidney function impairment by evaluating urine neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1) levels. Materials and methods: in total, 15 obese, 26 overweight, and 26 control adolescents aged 10 to 16 years were enrolled into the study. Urine samples were evaluated for NGAL and KIM-1 levels using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. We investigated the association between obesity and related comorbidities with urinary NGAL and KIM-1 excretion. Results: no significant differences were noted between the obese, overweight, and control groups in urinary NGAL and KIM-1 excretion (p = 0.327 and p = 0.917, respectively). In the obese and overweight groups urinary NGAL levels were 50.39 [30.88-74.22] in females and 26.67 [23.24-45.59] in males (p = 0.013). Also, urinary NGAL levels were increased in obese and overweight adolescents with LDL dyslipidemia at 64.12 [30.98-114.32] as compared to those without LDL dyslipidemia: 39.51 [25.59.56.37] (p = 0.024). Furthermore, a correlation was observed between insulin and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance levels with the NGAL/creatinine ratio in the overweight group (r = 0.515; p = 0.008, and r = 0.483; p = 0.014, respectively). Such correlation was not found in the obese group. Conclusion: the effect of obesity on renal function could not be determined in children. A longer exposure may be required for obesity-induced disruption of renal function in children. Renal function may be disrupted by dyslipidemia in obese adolescents. Furthermore, obesity impaired renal function in female adolescents. The normalization of these urinary markers as related to urine creatinine should be discussed.Article Citation - WoS: 63Citation - Scopus: 71Changes in volatile compounds, sugars and organic acids of different spices of peppers (Capsicum annuum L.) during storage(FOOD CHEMISTRY, 2020) Korkmaz, Aziz; Atasoy, Ahmet Ferit; Hayaloglu, Ali AdnanChanges in sugars, organic acids and volatile compounds (VC) of red pepper flakes (RPF), traditional (TRI), and industrial (INI) isot peppers were evaluated during one year storage at the room condition. The changes in the flavor components were significantly affected by the production methods and storage time. Glucose content decreased gradually along storage and reduced by about 21.23, 47.22 and 56.65% for TRI, INI and RPF, respectively. However, fructose decreased significantly only in RPF (11.29%). Citric and succinic acids exhibited slight changes, but malic acid showed an increasing trend, especially in RPF (4-fold). Most of the VC in all samples decreased or disappeared after storage. The major quantitative losses in these compounds were found in TRI during the first 3 months as 81.76%. The storage was found to be caused deterioration flavor properties in red pepper spices and revealed the importance of appropriate storage conditions.Article Citation - WoS: 26Citation - Scopus: 25Characterization and Comparison of Extra Virgin Olive Oils of Turkish Olive Cultivars(Molecules, 2023) Korkmaz, AzizExtra virgin olive oils (EVOOs) obtained from five Turkish olive cultivars widely produced in the Aegean and Marmara regions were investigated based on their total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total phenolic content (TPC), pigment contents, fatty acid (FA) profiles, phenolic compounds (PC), volatile compounds (VC), and sensory properties. The results showed that all properties of EVOO samples were significantly affected by the olive cultivar used. The pigment contents in Ayvalık (9.90 mg·kg−1) and Uslu (9.00 mg·kg−1) oils were higher than the others (p < 0.05). The greatest values for oleic acid (74.13%) and TPC (350.6 mg·kg−1) were observed in Gemlik and Domat oils, respectively (p < 0.05). Edincik oil showed the maximum hydroxytyrosol content (48.022 mg·kg−1) and TAC value (515.36 mg TE·kg−1) (p < 0.05). The Edincik, Domat, and Uslu oils were significantly not different for the total content of C6 compounds derived by lipoxygenase, which are the main volatiles responsible for the typical aroma of EVOOs (p > 0.05). Domat oil also exhibited the highest scores for bitterness and pungency perceptions (p < 0.05). The fruitiness scores of the oil samples (except for Ayvalık oil) were close to each other, even if they were statistically different (p < 0.05). Principal component analysis (PCA) indicated that the Ayvalık oil was separated from the others due to its poor-quality characteristics. As a result, it can be stated that Domat olive oil has better quality than the othersArticle Citation - WoS: 1Clinical and Cytokine Profile of Children With COVID-19: A Report From Turkey(Cureus, 2023) Unsal, Velid; Tahir Dalkıran, Emine M Kara, Velid Ünsal, Sadık Yurttutan, Sevcan İpek, Besra Dağoğlu, Yaşar KandurBackground We aimed to analyze the expression of infection-related biomarkers and inflammatory cytokines in laboratory-confirmed cases and compare the differences between clinically severe and non-severe ones. Method We randomly selected 35 patients who were hospitalized with the diagnosis of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Blood serum was obtained at the time of admission to the hospital, on the third to the fifth day, and at the time of discharge. Result The median age of our patients was 56.5±69.7 months (range: 1-205 months). The mean pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (pro-BNP) was significantly higher at the time of admission than on the third to the fifth day of illness. The mean pro-B-type natriuretic peptide levels at three time points were significantly higher in patients with severe cases than in mild-moderate cases. However, there was no significant difference between the clinical severity with regard to the cytokine levels at disease onset and recovery. Conclusion In the study, it was shown that cytokines play an important role in the pathogenesis of COVID-19. Therefore, it may be beneficial to use agents such as tocilizumab in the treatment.Article Clinical Relevance of Preoperative Neutrophil to Lymphocyte and Platelet to Lymphocyte Ratio in Renal Cell Carcinoma(Journal of Urological Surgery, 2018) Kölükçü, Engin; Kılıç, Şahin; Atılgan, Doğan; Parlaktaş, Bekir; Ceylan, Salih; Unsal, Velid; Etikan, İlkerObjective: The association of preoperative neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) with postoperative tumor stage and Fuhrman nuclear grade was investigated in patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Materials and Methods: Data of 123 patients, who were operated due to RCC, in our clinic was analysed. NLR and PLR were evaluated in patients who were classified according to tumor stage (T1 and T2 low stage, T3 and T4 high stage) and Fuhrman nuclear grade (grade 1 and 2 low-grade, grade 3 and 4 high-grade). NLR and PLR were compared using Levene’s test between the groups. Results: Sixty four patients were female (52.1%) and 59 were male (47.9%). All haematological parameters were expressed as 103 /μL. Mean age, blood neutrophil, lymphocyte and platelet counts, and NLR and PLR values of the patients were 62.49±12.43 years, 6.27±2.8, 2.05±0.83, 263.72±89.03, 4.01±3.93, and 149.73±82.1, respectively. The most common histologic subtype was recorded as clear cell RCC (76.4%). NLR and PLR were 3.83±3.22 and 142.79±66.66, respectively in the low-stage group and 4.43±5.29 and 165.85±109.41, respectively in the high stage group. As for the Fuhrman nuclear grading, NLR and PLR were 3.81±3.45 and 146.63±87.36, respectively in the low-grade group and 4.61±5.387 and 159.32±63.42 in the high-grade group. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: Although not statistically significant, high tumor stage and nuclear grade were positively correlated with NLR and PLR. It is concluded that, further multi-center and prospective studies with larger samples are needed to derive meaningful results.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 2Comparative Study of Lipid and Fatty Acid Profile in Liver Tissues of Male and Female Silurus triostegus During the Catching Seasons(2021) Kaçar, Semra; Başhan, MehmetIn this study, seasonal variations of total fatty acid (FA), phospholipid (PL) and triacylglycerol (TAG) compositions in liver tissues of catfish (Silurus triostegus) were investigated. Samples of S. triostegus were obtained from Atatürk Dam Lake, Turkey, in two month periods during one year as from May. The major components were palmitic acid (16:0), stearic acid (18:0), oleic acid (18:1n-9), palmi toleic acid (16:1n-7), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) and arachidonic acid (AA, 20:4n-6) in total lipid, 16:0, 18:0, 18:1n-9, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3), DHA and AA in PL, 16:0, 16:1n7, 18:1n-9, linoleic acid (LA, 18:2n-6), AA, EPA, DHA and docosapentaenoic acid (22:5n-3) in TAG extracted from the liver of S. triostegus in all seasons. N-3/n-6 ratio was found 2.00-2.61 in females, 1.15-2.75 in males in total lipid. The highest lipid content was found in May (2.39%) in the females. In the males, the highest level was found in September (2.91%). In TAG fraction, the component with the lowest ratio in both sexes’ TAG is PUFA. In PL fraction, SFA, MUFA, and PUFA percentages were found at similar rates in both sexes in all months.Article Citation - WoS: 46Citation - Scopus: 52Corrosion behavior of mild steel in 1 M HCl with Cyclotrichium niveum as a green inhibitor(Elsevier, 2024) Yıldız, Reşit; Arslanhan, Selim; Döner, Ali; Baran, Mehmet FıratRecently, green inhibitors are replacing classical inhibitors in the acid cleaning industry due to very low cost, environmentally friendly and none toxic. In this study, Cyclotrichium niveum is used as a potential green corrosion inhibitor to investigate the corrosion behavior of mild steel (MS) in chloride solution using electrochemical, morphological, structural and quantum chemical methods. Fifty-three flavonoids are detected in methanol extract of cyclotrichium niveum by LC/ESI-MS/MS. While icorr values decreased, Rp and inhibition efficiencies values derived from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and linear polarization resistance (LPR) increased in increasing inhibitor concentrations. Maximum inhibition efficiency is found to be 97.3%, that is the almost highest value, when compared to previous studies and plant extract is classified as a mixed type inhibitor with respect to the potentiodynamic polarization (PDP). The model that best fits the experimental values is the Langmuir isotherm. The temperature effect is also studied in the range of 25–55 ○C. Higher activation energy is obtained in the presence of inhibitor, suggesting that it acts as an efficient inhibitor by forming a physical barrier to the charge and mass transfer reaction, leading to reduction in corrosion rate. Scanning electron and atomic force microscopies showed the more uniform, crack and pits free structure, confirming that there is a protective film over the MS surface for inhibited solution. XPS analysis showed the existence of C, O, and Fe atoms on the MS surface. Quantum chemical calculation manifested the adsorption mechanism associated with the electronic structure of the molecules. The findings of this work can be applicable in chemical cleaning process with acid treatment.Article Citation - WoS: 5Citation - Scopus: 5Diagnostic Performance of Erythropoietin and Erythropoietin Receptors Levels in Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(Clinical Psychopharmacology and Neuroscience, 2021) Güngör, Meltem; Ergul Belge Kurutas, Erkan Oner, Velid Unsal, Hatice Altun, Ali Erdinc Yalin, Serap Yalin, Ozlem Bozkus, Nilfer SahinObjective: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a heterogeneous, highly heritable, a common childhood neurobehavioural disorder resulting from complex gene-gene and gene-environment interactions. The erythropoietin (Epo)/erythropoietin receptors (EpoR) system turned out to have additional important functions in nonhematopoietic tissue. In this study, we aimed to investigate the levels of Epo and and EpoR, and also their diagnostic values in children with ADHD. Methods: A total of 70 children were included in the study, 35 drug-naive patients with ADHD (age: 6−12 years; male/female: 20/15) and 35 healthy controls (age: 6−12 years; male/female: 22/13). Serum Epo and EpoR levels was determined using a commercial sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. Results: The results indicated that the levels of Epo decreased in patients with ADHD compared to control (p < 0.05). On the other hand, EpoR levels increased in these patients (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the ratio of Epo/EpoR was significantly lower in ADHD patients than controls (p < 0.05). Receiver operator characteristic curve analysis showed high diagnostic performance for Epo and EpoR, areas under curve were 0.980 and 1.000, respectively. Conclusion: This is the first report to investigate the association between serum Epo and EpoR levels in ADHD patients. Our results indicated that Epo may play a role in the etiology of ADHD, and Epo therapy may be beneficial in these disorders if given in addition to the routine treatment of children with ADHD. Furthermore, our results reveal possible diagnostic value of Epo and EpoR.Conference Object Effect of Agro-Industrial Wastes on Production of Laccase in Submerged Cultures of Some Wild Mushrooms(Elsevier Science Bv, 2012) Acay, Hilal; Keskin, Cumali; Kacar, SemraArticle Citation - WoS: 23Citation - Scopus: 30Effect of seasonal variation on lipid and fatty acid profile in muscle tissue of male and female Silurus triostegus(SPRINGER INDIA, 2016) Kacar, Semra; Bashan, Mehmet; Oymak, Seyit AhmetFatty acid (FA) compositions of total lipid, phospholipid (PL) and triacylglycerol (TAG) fractions have been determined in muscle tissues of Silurus triostegus. The distributions of saturated fatty acid (SFA), monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) proportions were found to be different among total lipid, PL and TAG fractions from lipids in muscle tissues of the male and female S. triostegus in all seasons. Triacylglycerol contained a lower proportion of PUFA and a higher proportion of MUFA and SFA than PL while PL contained higher proportion of PUFA than proportion of MUFA and SFA compared to TAG. Triacylglycerol and PL fatty acid compositions in muscle tissues of the male and female fish species were found different. The most abundant fatty acids in the investigated seasons were palmitic acid (C16:0), stearic acid (C18:0), oleic acid (C18:1 n-9), palmitoleic acid (C16:1 n-7) and docosahexaenoic acid (C22:6 n-3). It was shown that the total lipid content and FA compositions in muscle tissues of the male and female S. triostegus were influenced by reproduction period and season.Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 6Effect of seasons on the fatty acid profile of total lipid, phospholipid and triacylglycerol in Mastacembelus mastacembelus (Atatürk Dam Lake, Turkey).(2018) Kaçar, Semra; Başhan, Mehmet; Oymak, AhmetThe present study investigated the lipid content and FA profiles of total lipids, phospholipids (PL) and triacylglycerols (TAG) of Mastacembelus mastacembelus from the Atatürk Dam Lake (Turkey). The results showed that the total lipid content of the dorsal muscle varied seasonally from 0.50% to 3.59%. Wide ranges of saturated fatty acids (SFAs) (36.21 to 50.52%) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) (25.22 to 42.02%) were found in the PL fraction. However, higher monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) (37.63 to 45.07%) and SFA (34.71 to 38.82%) were found in TAG (triacylglycerol). The ratios of ω-3 to ω-6 PUFA ranged from 0.65 to 1.32 and 1.07 to 3.48 in PL (phospholipid) and TAG fraction, respectively. The results also showed that the major components were palmitic acid (C16:0), stearic acid (C18:0), oleic acid (C18:1ω-9), palmitoleic acid (C16:1ω-7), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6ω-3), arachidonic acid (AA, C20:4ω-6) and docosapentaenoic acid (C22:5ω-3) in total lipid, C16:0, C18:1ω-9, AA and DHA in PL, C16:0, C16:1ω-7, C18:1ω-9, linoleic acid (LA, C18:2ω-6), and DHA in TAG extracted from the muscle of M. mastacembelus in all seasons.Article Citation - WoS: 5Citation - Scopus: 5The effects of different concentration methods on the chemical composition, functional and sensory attributes of molasses produced from grape (Vitis vinifera L.) juice(SpringerLink, 2023) Korkmaz, AzizThe efects of concentration by outdoor (OCM) and vacuum (VCM) and traditional (TCM) methods for the production of molasses from fresh grape juice (FGJ) were evaluated concerning volatile compounds, sugars, organic acids, hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), total phenolic (TPC), total favonoid (TFC) contents, and antioxidant capacity (TAC), and sensory properties. Compared to FGJ, its molasses had lower TPC, TFC, TAC, and total organic acids and total sugars (except for the OCM) in total soluble solids (TSS). Additionally, the most of (60.7%) volatile compounds in FGJ disappeared with the production of the molasses. Moreover, all investigated features were signifcantly infuenced by the concentration method used. The TCMconcentration method markedly increased the amounts of both HMF (~ 180- and 50-fold greater than of the OCM and TCM, respectively) and total volatile furans (~20- and 3.6-fold greater than that of OCM and TCM, respectively). Additionally, this method presented the best antioxidant properties in terms of greater TPC, TFC, and TAC, whereas both TPC and TFC in the molasses produced by the OCM-method were not signifcantly diferent from those they obtained by the VCM-method. The principal component analysis (PCA) based on the chemical characteristics revealed close similarity between the OCM and VCM, even though the OCM had higher contents for sugars and organic acids. According to the sensory evaluation, there were no signifcant diferences between the scores of favor and overall acceptability for the TCM and OCM. In conclusion, an adapted the OCM-concentrating method to industrial-type can be proposed to produce high-quality molasses.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 1Effects of Ketamine on Penile Tissues in an Experimental Priapism Model in Rats(Turkish Assoc Trauma Emergency Surgery, 2024) Gevrek, Fikret; Fırat, Fatih; Unsal, Velid; Tapar, Hakan; Karaman, Tugba; Karaman, Serkan; Yalçın, KenanBACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the histopathological and biochemical effects of ketamine on penile tissues following ischemia-reperfusion injury induced by priapism. METHODS: Twenty-four male rats were randomized into three groups. Group 1 served as the control group. Group 2 underwent the priapism model to induce ischemia-reperfusion injury. Group 3, the treatment group, experienced a similar ischemia-reperfusion model as Group 2; additionally, 50 mg/kg of ketamine was administered intraperitoneally just before reperfusion. Blood biochemical analyses and penile histopathological evaluations were performed. RESULTS: In Group 3, significant improvements were observed in all histopathological scores, including desquamation, edema, inflammation, and vasocongestion compared to Group 2 (p<0.001). Blood biochemical analyses showed that the malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were recorded as 10 in Group 2, with a significant decrease in Group 3 (p=0.013). Similarly, proinflammatory cytokine levels, including interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), were found to be suppressed in Group 3 compared to Group 2 (p=0.003, p=0.022, and p=0.028, respectively). Antioxidant enzyme activities, such as glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), were higher in Group 3 compared to Group 2 (p=0.016 and p=0.024, respec- tively). CONCLUSION: Ketamine is an effective anesthetic agent in alleviating the effects of penile ischemia-reperfusion injury.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 2The effects of oxytocin on penile tissues in experimental priapism model in rats(SPRINGER, 2019) Kolukçu, Engin; Kılıç, Şahin; Parlaktaş, Bekir Süha; Erdemir, Fikret; Ünsal, Velid; Atılgan, Doğan; Uluocak, NihatPurposeThis study aimed to demonstrate the effects of oxytocin on penile tissues in ischemia-reperfusion injury developed after priapism.MethodsForty Wistar Albino strain male rats were divided into four groups. The control group (n=10) was not intervened. In Group 2, a rat model of priapism was constructed and maintained for 1 h. In Group 3, reperfusion was ensured for 30min following priapism. Rats in Group 4 rats were given oxytocin 30min before the induction of reperfusion following priapism. All rats were penectomized, and adequate amounts of blood sample were drawn. Inflammation, vasocongestion, desquamation, and edema in penile tissue were scored between 0 and 3 points (0: normal, 1: mild, 2: moderate, 3: severe) to evaluate the severity of tissue damage. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), and nitric oxide (NO) in blood samples were determined spectrophotometrically.ResultsIn histopathological examination, statistically significant positive changes were detected in vasocongestion, inflammation, desquamation, and edema scores in Group 4 than in Group 2 and Group 3 (p<0.001). Biochemical test results revealed that NO levels were significantly lower in Group 4 than in Group 3 (p<0.001). Serum GSH-Px activities in Group 4 significantly increased when compared with the other groups 2 and 3 (p=0.002, p=0.001, respectively). There was no statistical difference among the groups regarding SOD activities and MDA levels (p>0.05).ConclusionsOxytocin protected against priapism-induced ischemia-reperfusion injury developed in cavernosal tissue as observed based on histopathological and biochemical evidence. Although this is an experimental study, oxytocin can be thought as an alternative drug in the treatment of priapism.Article Citation - WoS: 34Citation - Scopus: 34The effects of production methods on the color characteristics, capsaicinoid content and antioxidant capacity of pepper spices (C. annuum L.)(Food Chemistry, 2021) Korkmaz, Aziz; Atasoy, Ahmet Ferit; Hayaloglu, Ali AdnanThe effects of production methods for red pepper flakes (RPF) and traditional (TRI) and industrial (INI) isot spices were evaluated with respect to the carotenoid and capsaicinoid contents, extractable color (ASTA color), surface color parameters, nonenzymatic browning (NEB), and the DPPH free radical-scavenging capacity of fresh red Capsicum (FRC). The measured characteristics were significantly affected by the processing methods used. RPF exhibited the highest antioxidant activity and best color quality in terms of carotenoid content, which was the highest; ASTA value; surface color intensity; and NEB, which was the lowest. In contrast, INI-processing methods resulted in poor color quality, causing the maximum increase in NEB. The concentration of capsaicinoid increased at the end of TRI processing, whereas it decreased in the two other methods. These results suggest that the traditional production method for isots prevents excessive destruction of their color attributes and contributes to the desirable characteristic browning.Article Citation - WoS: 34Citation - Scopus: 34The effects of production methods on the color characteristics, capsaicinoid content and antioxidant capacity of pepper spices (C. annuum L.)(Elsevier, 2021) Korkmaz, Aziz; atasoy, Ahmet Ferit; Hayaloğlu, Ali adnanThe effects of production methods for red pepper flakes (RPF) and traditional (TRI) and industrial (INI) isot spices were evaluated with respect to the carotenoid and capsaicinoid contents, extractable color (ASTA color), surface color parameters, nonenzymatic browning (NEB), and the DPPH free radical-scavenging capacity of fresh red Capsicum (FRC). This property is the key factor in the developing of cost-effective and efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) electrocatalysts for sustainable hydrogen production. In this study, novel electrocatalysts which are decorated with Pt and Ru have been developed for HER electrocatalysis. Microscopic analysis such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) are performed to determine the morphological and compositional structures. Electrocatalysis properties are evaluated by cathodic current-potential curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) in 1.0 M KOH solution. Chronoamperometry (CA) and cycle tests are used for stability/durability of electrocatalysts. Results show that a small onset potential of the porous Cu/Ni/CuZn–Pt is obtained for HER. Exchange current density and polarization resistance are found to be 5.39 mA cm−2 and 2.0 Ω cm2 at overpotential of −100 mV for porous Cu/Ni/CuZn–Pt, respectively, indicating that Cu/Ni/CuZn–Pt is higher electrocatalytic properties than the others. Moreover, very low overpotentials at 10 and 40 mA cm−2 are obtained on porous Cu/Ni/CuZn–Pt compared with porous Cu/Ni/CuZn–Ru and Cu/Ni/CuZn. Porous Cu/Ni/CuZn–Pt also displays excellent stability/durability in test solution. The remarkable electrocatalysis properties of porous Cu/Ni/CuZn–Pt can be explained due to high porous structure, leaching of Zn from the deposit, intrinsic activity of Pt as well as changing in the electronic structure. It should be considered that porous Cu/Ni/CuZn–Pt is of high corrosion resistance in test solution for 120 h, which makes it good candidate for HER.
