Article Acute Cyanide Intoxication Due To Apricot Seed Ingestion(Soc Argentina Pediatria, 2024) Talay, Mehmet N.; Gungor, Emre; Orhan, Ozhan; Department of Internal Medical Sciences / Dahili Tıp Bilimleri Bölümü; 10. Faculty of Medicine / Tıp Fakültesi; 01. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiIntroduction : Cyanide poisoning, whether it be accidental or intentional, remains a significant danger to adults and children, especially in societies where agriculture is a primary source of income. We examined the clinical follow-up, complications, and results of cyanide poisoning cases that occurred after eating the pits and seeds of plants containing cyanide glycosides, such as apricot kernels and almonds. Methods : Between 01/01/2017 and 01/08/2022, 14 children aged 1-18 years who were followed up with a prediagnosis of cyanide poisoning in our Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) were retrospectively analysed. Results : Eight of the patients followed with a preliminary diagnosis of cyanide poisoning were female and six were male. The most common admission month was July (42.8%) coinciding with the agricultural season. The most common symptoms at presentation were weakness and fatigue (n = 7). In the PICU, 4 patients presented lip cyanosis; 3, altered level of consciousness. Vomiting, seizure, headache, dizziness and palpitatons were less frequent. Four patients were treated with hydroxocobalamin (Cyanokit (R) ) as an antidote due to acidosis in their blood gases. All patients treated for cyanide poisoning were discharged. Conclusions : Cyanide poisoning should be considered in paediatric patients with suspicious findings, sudden loss of consciousness, increased anion gap acidosis and lactic acidosis. The history of eating the seeds of plants such as apricot and almonds should be investigated .Article Acute Cyanide Poisoning Due To Ingestion of Apricot Seeds(Soc Argentina Pediatria, 2024) Talay, Mehmet N.; Gungor, Emre; Orhan, Ozhan; Department of Internal Medical Sciences / Dahili Tıp Bilimleri Bölümü; 10. (Scrophulariaceae) In Diyarbakir, Turkey And Their Taxonomic Importance(Bangladesh Assoc Plant Taxonomists, 2023) Kilic, MuratVerbascum globiferum Hub.-Mor. and V. lysiosepalum Hub.-Mor. are endemic to Turkey which is a center of endemism for Verbascum species. This study gives the anatomical, palynological and seed micromorphological features of V. globiferum and V. lysiosepalum which grow in Diyarbakir. The xylem elements occupy a large area in the root cross-sections of the species. In stem cross-sections, the upper part of the epidermis cells is surrounded by a separate cuticle layer and the pith region covers a large area. In the leaves, the main vein is shapped as collateral bundle. Pollen grains are tricolporatetricolpate, oblate-spheroidal, and exine ornamentation is reticulate. Seeds are brown and oblong-ovate to prismatic and alveolate. The seed coat ornamentation is irregular with polygonal cells, with densely, distinct vesicles. The capsules are pubescent, covered with stellate and branched hairy or glandular hairs. The seed displayed that substantial taxonomic understanding can be acquired from examining the seed characteristics of Verbascum, particularly at the species level.Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 4Animal Remains of Alaybeyi Hoyuk(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2019) Siddiq, Abu Bakar; 02.01. Department of Anthropology / Antropoloji Bölümü; 02. Faculty of Letters / Edebiyat Fakültesi; 01. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiThis paper presents the zooarchaeological observations on animal remains of Alaybeyi Hoyuk unearthed from 2016 and 2017 excavation sessions. Dated to 4721-4553 cal. BC, Alaybeyi stands so far as the oldest archaeological settlement discovered in northeast Anatolia. Therefore, the faunal assemblage at Alaybeyi offers great opportunity to study the status of animals and their relationships with humans in the largely unexplored Kars-Erzurum plateau covering a period from the Chalcolithic to Late Iron Age. Taxonomic and osteometric analyses show that, like the present day, cattle were dominant over caprines, revealing extensive cattle pastoralism in the region for at least about 7 millennia. While caprines too were significant in the subsistence strategy of local humans, there was not any sign of raising pigs. Significant numbers of wild species including carnivores, aquatic mammals, and rodents, as well as resident and migratory birds, were also hunted by Alaybeyi people. Additionally, horse burials, horse cult, dog burials, and a rich number of dog bones present animals as versatile actors in various ritual and symbolic practices at the site.Article Citation - WoS: 11Citation - Scopus: 11Anoxybacillus sp. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiA new method for the determination of Cu(II) and Pb(II) by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) after preconcentrating on a column containing Anoxybacillus sp. SO B1-immobilized Amberlite XAD-16 was developed. The functional groups of Anoxybacillus sp. SO B1 immobilized on Amberlite XAD-16 were characterized in KBr tablets by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry. Various parameters such as pH, amount of the adsorbent, eluent type and volume, and flow rate of the sample solution were studied. The optimum pH values of quantitative sorption for Cu(II) and Pb(II) were found to be pH 7.0 and 5.0 and Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions could be quantitatively eluted with 5.0ml of 1.0mol L-1 HCI and 10.0ml of 0.25mol L-1 HNO3, respectively. Recoveries of Cu(II) and Pb(II) were found to be 100.9 +/- 1.57% and 100.3 +/- 0.49% (N = 5), the limits of detection of Cu(II) and Pb(II) in the determination by FAAS (3s, N = 10) were found to be 0.8 and 1.6 mu g L-1, respectively. The proposed enrichment method was applied for metal ion determination from water samples such as two parts of Tigris River water in Diyarbakir and Elazig, Lake of Hazar in Elazig, and tap water in Diyarbakir. Furthermore, the accuracy of the proposed method was verified by studying the analytical recovery and by analyzing certified reference material (NCS-DC 73350 leaves of poplar).Article Citation - WoS: 14Application of Ammi Model for Evaulation Spring Barley Genotypes in Multi-Environment Trials(Bangladesh Botanical Soc, 2016) Kendal, Enver; Tekdal, Sertac; 16.02. Department of Turkish language and Literature / Türk Dili ve Edebiyatı Bölümü; 02. Faculty of Letters / Edebiyat Fakültesi; 01. Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Assessing the Prognostic Value of Halp Score in Peripheral Artery Disease: Correlation With Lesion Severity and Long-Term Mortality(Sage Publications Ltd, 2025) Evsen, Ali; Aktan, Adem; Kilic, Raif; Yalcin, Abdulaziz; Ozbek, Mehmet; Department of Internal Medical Sciences / Dahili Tıp Bilimleri Bölümü; 10. Faculty of Medicine / Tıp Fakültesi; 01. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiIntroduction Peripheral artery disease (PAD) poses a growing clinical challenge due to an aging population, despite advances in treatment methods. Various scoring systems have emerged to predict high-risk patients, including the HALP (hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte, and platelet) score, known for predicting prognosis in cancers and stroke. This study assesses the HALP score's relation to lesion severity and long-term mortality in PAD patients. Methods We retrospectively analyzed 305 symptomatic PAD patients undergoing endovascular intervention. The following formula was used to calculate the HALP score: hemoglobin (g/L) x albumin (g/L) x lymphocyte count (/L) / platelet count (/L). Lesion severity was classified by TASC-II: TASC AB and TASC CD. Mortality data were obtained from hospital and social security records. Results The study involved 305 patients (mean age 64.4 +/- 11.8 years; 72.1% male), divided into survivors (208) and non-survivors (97). ROC analysis identified HALP score as the strongest predictor of long-term mortality (AUC: 0.736; 95% CI: 0.679-0.793; p < .001). HALP score (HR, 0.087; 95% CI, 0.025-1.300; p < .001), age (p < .001), DM (p = .007), and CRP (p = .013) independently predicted mortality. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed higher HALP scores linked to lower long-term mortality (Log-rank: 20.102, p < .001), with an average follow-up of 48 +/- 18 months. Conclusion The HALP score emerged as a robust predictor of PAD prognosis, surpassing individual components and other parameters. Lower HALP scores correlated with more severe lesions and reduced life expectancy.Article Citation - WoS: 9Citation - Scopus: 10Assessment of renal function in obese and overweight children with ngal and kim-1 biomarkers(Nutricion Hospitalaria, 2020) Unsal, Velid; Gül, Ali; Yılmaz, Resul; Özmen, Zeliha Cansel; Demir, Osman; Gümüşer, Rüveyda; 09.03. Department of Nutrition and Dietetics/ Beslenme ve Diyetetik Bölümü; 9. Faculty of Health Sciences / Sağlık Bilimleri Fakültesi; 01. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiAim and background:the incidence of obesity has increased among children, and obesity has been considered an independent risk factor for chronic kidney disease. We aimed to determine the degree of kidney function impairment by evaluating urine neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1) levels. Materials and methods: in total, 15 obese, 26 overweight, and 26 control adolescents aged 10 to 16 years were enrolled into the study. Urine samples were evaluated for NGAL and KIM-1 levels using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. We investigated the association between obesity and related comorbidities with urinary NGAL and KIM-1 excretion. Results: no significant differences were noted between the obese, overweight, and control groups in urinary NGAL and KIM-1 excretion (p = 0.327 and p = 0.917, respectively). In the obese and overweight groups urinary NGAL levels were 50.39 [30.88-74.22] in females and 26.67 [23.24-45.59] in males (p = 0.013). Also, urinary NGAL levels were increased in obese and overweight adolescents with LDL dyslipidemia at 64.12 [30.98-114.32] as compared to those without LDL dyslipidemia: 39.51 [25.59.56.37] (p = 0.024). Furthermore, a correlation was observed between insulin and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance levels with the NGAL/creatinine ratio in the overweight group (r = 0.515; p = 0.008, and r = 0.483; p = 0.014, respectively). Such correlation was not found in the obese group. Conclusion: the effect of obesity on renal function could not be determined in children. A longer exposure may be required for obesity-induced disruption of renal function in children. Renal function may be disrupted by dyslipidemia in obese adolescents. Furthermore, obesity impaired renal function in female adolescents. The normalization of these urinary markers as related to urine creatinine should be discussed.Article Attitudes of Health Sciences Students in Turkey Towards Individuals With Different Sexual Orientations(Womens Health & Action Research Centre, 2025) Deger, Vasfiye B.; Kacan, Havva; 09.01. Department of Nursing / Hemşirelik Bölümü; 9. Faculty of Health Sciences / Sağlık Bilimleri Fakültesi; 01. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiThe goal of the present study is to determine some of the biochemical compositions and antioxidant capacities of plant extracts in two endemic taxa for Turkey including T. cadmeum (Boiss.) Heywood subsp. orientale Grierson and T. nitens (Boiss. & Noë) Grierson together with T. polycephalum (L.) Sch.Bip subsp. argyrophyllum (K. Koch) Podlech, and T. parthenium (L.) Sch.Bip. The fatty acids were determined by using gas chromatography, while phenolics, lipid soluble vitamins and sterols were determined by using HPLC and radical scavenging activities, total phenolics, and FRAP were determined spectrophotometrically. It was found that Tanacetum taxa have palmitic acid (C16:0), and stearic acid (C18:0) as major saturated fatty acids and linoleic acid (C18:2 n6), α-linolenic acid (C18:3 n3) and oleic acid (C18:1 n9) as principal unsaturated fatty acids. It was found that Tanacetum taxa had more total unsaturated fatty acid contents (60.24±0.3%- 70.54±0.29%) than saturated fatty acids and it was found that T. parthenium had the highest total essential fatty acid composition (58.65%±0.59%). It was also reported that the omega6/omega3 ratio of T. cadmium subsp. orientale (8.22) differed from other taxa in this study. Also, the present study showed that Tanacetum had the lowest amount of lipid soluble vitamins. On the other hand, catechin was found to be the main polyphenolic compound in this study and it was determined that T. parthenium had the highest catechin (4479.1±5.71 µg/mg) and total phenolic contents (324.91±2.01 µgGAE/mg) in this study. Rutin was only determined in two endemic taxa T. cadmeum subsp. orientale (23±0.91 µg/mg), and T. nitens (5.7±0.27 µg/mg). Also, the naringenin, vanillic acid and caffeic acid amounts of the endemic T. cadmeum subsp. orientale and T. nitens were higher than other taxa in the study. In addition, it was determined that Tanacetum taxa had a high stigmasterol content. However, T. parthenium had a higher ergosterol content (271±2.36 µg/mg). It was also found that T. parthenium has highest D2, α-tocopherol, retinol acetate, ergosterol, and stigmasterol contents among the studied taxa. In addition, the study showed that Tanacetum taxa have strong DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities. It was concluded that Tanacetum taxa have potent antioxidant capacity.Article Citation - WoS: 7Citation - Scopus: 8Biosynthesis and Characterization of Silver Nanoparticles Using Fig (ficus Carica) Leaves: a Potential Antimicrobial Activity(Corvinus Univ Budapest, 2019) Acay, H.; 09.03. Mardin Artuklu University / Mardin Artuklu ÜniversitesiEnvironmentally friendly methods for obtaining nanomaterials see a great interest. In addition to being inexpensive, the easy implementation process and the advantages of synthesis without toxic chemicals are the main reasons of interest. In this study, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were successfully synthesized using fig (Ficus carica) leaf extract. The formation and the presence of AgNPs were observed using ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry (UV-Vis). Peaks with a maximum wavelength of 419 nm are identified in the measurements. Phytochemicals in the extract responsible for functional groups providing reduction and stability were evaluated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) data. The Scanning electron microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectrum (SEM-EDX) analysis showed that the AgNPs were spherical and the elemental composition contained mostly silver. X-ray diffractometer (XRD) results revealed that the peaks 111 degrees, 200 degrees, 220 degrees and 311 degrees belong to the characteristic structure of silver and have a crystal dimension of 17.30 Nm using Debye-Scherrer equation. In thermogravimetric - differential thermal analysis (TGA-DTA) analysis, the degradation temperatures of AgNPs were evaluated. AgNPs showed antimicrobial activity on various microorganisms even at very high concentrations. As a solution to the antimicrobial search, it can be developed in medical industry.Article Citation - WoS: 14Citation - Scopus: 21Biosynthesis and Characterization of Silver Nanoparticles Using King Oyster (pleurotus Eryngii) Extract: Effect on Some Microorganisms(Corvinus Univ Budapest, 2019) Acay, H.; Baran, M. Metal nanoparticle production, which does not contain toxic chemicals and does not harm the environment, needs to be developed to avoid adverse effects on medical applications. In this study, Pleurotus eryngii (PE) extract was used for preparation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The presence of AgNP was understood that after adding 1 mM silver nitrate (AgNO3) to the fungus extract, the reaction turned from the open yellow to reddish brown. The analysis of samples taken at different times with the UV-Visible Spectrophotometer (UV-Vis) confirms the formation of PE-AgNPs. The Scanning electron microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectrum (SEM-EDX) analysis showed that spherical nanoparticles were formed. X-ray crystallography (XRD), analysis is calculated from Debye-Sherers inequality, in which PE-AgNP synthesized in the study was 18.45 nm in size. It has been demonstrated by using the minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MX) method in which AgNPs have strong antimicrobial activity.Article Citation - WoS: 5Citation - Scopus: 4Biosynthesis of AgNPs by extract from waste leaves of Citrullus lanatus sp. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis was used to evaluate the phytochemicals responsible for effective reduction in the formation of AgNPs. UV-visible spectrophotometer (UV-Vis.) Spectra were also used to determine the presence of AgNPs. X-Ray Diffraction Diffractometer (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscope, Zeta potential analyzes were performed to define the crystal structures, dimensions and surface charges of AgNPs, respectively. In these data, it was determined that AgNPs showed maximum absorbance at 460 nm, spherical appearance, 21.27 crystal nano size and -30.05 mV zeta potential. Antimicrobial effects of AgNPs on gram positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis) bacteria, gram negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) bacteria, as well as on fungus C. albicans pathogenic microorganisms It was analyzed by specifying the Minimum Inhibition Concentration (MIC) by microdilution.
